1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests....

Overall my stay was ok. The staff were great, and it was handy having a bar and restaurant downstairs. Howeverm the room was small and smelly. There was a leak from the toilet on the bathroom floor that was noted in previous reviews but still not fixed for my stay. The carpet is long overdue for a clean (hence the smell). The mini fridge had a tray on a shelf to catch the dripping from the freezer. This made the fridge barely usable and also wasn't cold enough. The iron they supplied me (after requesting multiple times) was useless and damaged my suit. The ironing board was dirty and needed a towel over it to protect my clothes. The staff were great but it was obvious that the owner of this place does not maintain it and the rooms are lacking some key essentials. Blankets were old and stained. Extra blankets supplied were only single, for my queen bed.

In a city where they seem to redevelop over anything old, it is nice to have this place. It's old and worn but very quaint and comfortable enough. Everything works ok, the staff are friendly and helpful, especially Saleem. I lived in Auckland as a young guy and in my uni days have had a few beers at the Shakey. So it was nice to stay here a few nights as I caught up with the city of my youth. I'm glad it's here and not changed much - with the Kiwi Tavern and London Bar gone, especially so.

I wanted to love this hotel. It has so much character, with the brewery downstairs, the random Victorian nooks with assorted chairs. And every staff member was friendly and cheerful. Unfortunately, we woke up to a large leak in the ceiling rained onto one of our beds. The manager was apologetic, and refunded us a third of the cost, but it seems like it should have been a bigger reaction. There was no air-conditioning, and with the window open, mosquitoes ruled the night.

Location was great. We arrived at 8.30 in the morning rang the bell and was admitted to the lovely old hallway and sweeping staircase. Bags were dropped off (behind the bar!) and we were told that our room would be ready in an hour. That was a bonus. We went off to explore the area and popped back about 11 - the bar was open and we were shown our room. 4 flights of stairs sorry I forgot how many. The room was tidy and HOT. There was a fan thank god. Shower was ok small and basic but the water was hot and the toiletries left were a nice touch. Ideal place for a couple of days. Yes room was hot - TV didn't work - but kettle did! We ate at the pub and took advantage of the 20% discount on food and drink for residents. Food was great - portions were HUGE! Beer was good. Would recommend for a no frills stay.

I hate to pick on a place when it simply is what it is but this hotel is really bad. The rooms are ridiculously small and uncomfortable with no AC and no elevator so when you have to check out early and there is no staff to help, you are lugging your two week packed suitcases up 4 ( in our case) flights of stairs in a hot and stuffy stairwell. There weren’t even the basics you would expect, like more than one outlet in the room and more than one tiny, dim light in the bathroom. I appreciate the fact they don’t pretend to be something they’re not, but even for a one night stay like we did, we couldn’t get out of there fast enough.

Dear value guest, Thank you for staying with us and your feedback. We are sorry to hear few things did not please you in the room type you booked. We take the guest feedback seriously and we can assure you that the quality standards you noticed in the particular room are not the norms at The Shakespeare. Your feedback has been taken on board and necessary actions being taken to avoid reoccurrence. We look forward to welcoming you back again and changing your experience in a different room type.
