Close to Southern Cross Bus Station and a decent breakfast. Very small room but all we were doing there was sleeping (comfy king bed so good for that). Hotel staff very friendly and even held onto our luggage when we walked around town for the day. The breakfast was better then we expected probably just needed a pot of coffee... More

My wife and I had to book at short notice a room in the city for 3 nights to visit an elderly uncle in hospital. Hotel Sophia came to our rescue and offered a wonderfully convenient location, newly refurbished bathroom and spotless room with very comfortable bed. A big surprise was the generous complimentary buffet breakfast each morning. The staff... More

I don't like to think of myself as a snob, but the more time goes on it seems inevitable; I am a snob! I needed somewhere for a 4 night stay while I attended a training opportunity in Melbourne. I didn't want anything super expensive, but I needed to be accessible to the city as we had some late nights... More

Just one night in this place the only requirements were close Southern Cross station and cheap. This place was more than I had hoped. The room was clean, albeit a little small. Nice breakfast nothing to rave about but quite adequate. And plunger coffee free of charge that gets the thumbs up. Probably one of the best transit hotels I... More

The company I work for booked this hotel room for me. I found the hotel to be in an ideal location, close to transport and the CBD. The rooms were very clean and comfortable and great value for money. Our company will be using Hotel Sophia for our future bookings as it is ideal for our transit needs.

The hotel is located in the downtown area so it is less suitable for families on vacation as nearby restaurants were limited. Rooms were small but clean. All rooms (with and without road frontage, high or low floors) will hear the traffic below. Breakfast was downright simple - fine for a few days stay but not more than that. Hotel... More

I have stayed here a few times, simple clean basic hotel nice touches like perculated coffee and good quality teas, sewing kits and shoe shine included, also breakfast is included. Best thing you can open the windows for fresh air, nicely located and comfortable - very reasonably priced

We stayed here twice on our trip. The rooms are a little small but this is to be expected in an older style hotel right in the heart of Melbourne. Breakfast was great for the days start. You can walk the city area or jump on the free tram.

We stayed two nights here. The room was very small - just big enough to fit a bed and small desk. The bathroom included only a shower. There was an adjoining door between our room and the one next door which was kept locked however we could hear our neighbor snoring through it. Breakfast is included: this is self serve... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
