Location is the key about this hostel. Pros: Clean, modern and well located. Friendly staff. Space quite big in the room. Cons: The social area doesn't encourage interaction speacially in winter because its cold and dark. No breakfast.

I stayed at United backpackers for 4 nights, and I found it to be the best quality backpackers I've ever been too. Loved the rooms. Softest, cleanest beds with warm bedding provided, your own lamp and powerpoint, so no fighting over powerpoint space. The kitchen is large, clean and has a huge amount of storage space which seems to be... More

I loved staying at United! the staff were all super friendly, the rooms were spacious and warm and the beds were very comfortable. the facilities were clean for the most part (one time I did go to use the toilet very early Sunday morning and someone had been sick in the sink but that's not their fault, how could they... The first thing that will strike you about this place is it's cool character- it has a fun, slightly hipster vibe that's pretty rare in hostels, but is accompanied by incredible friendliness and chill from the employees. The bar in the basement is affordable and fun, the activities were great, having a bathroom in the room was amazing, they had... More

Instantly disappointed by the rude man on reception (will insert name here), asked if I could leave my heavy backpack at reception whilst I check out some other hostels and was told no because it's not in their best interest. My back was killing me so had to book a nights stay. Didn't see the harm in leaving my backpack... More

Has every potential to be a great hostel. Kitchen and bathrooms are very good. Beds are comfy. Location etc all great. The attitude of some of the staff kill this place. Most are living there and are very unfriendly to the short stay guests, it's as though they have totally missed the point of a hostel and that it only... More

Hey Amy, Thanks so much for the review. It always helps to get peoples feedback so thanks for taking the time to do it.. I do agree and unfortunately it is something that needs to be a constant reminder to them. They do live here together so they do understandably form close bonds and do tend to stick together but... The accommodation is simple, yet supplies all of the necessities. It is in an optimal location right next to the Flinders St Train Station, which made everything easier for the rest of the time in Melbourne :).

Room wasn't ready when I arrived but the girl at the desk got me to do all the paper work so it would be a matter of collecting my key later on. They allowed me to leave the luggage in the storage room. Didn't really use the facilities apart from the showers. Rooms were a decent size and had storage... More

Walking tour on Thursdays was a great way to see the city for free and meet other travelers. Guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to cater the tour to our interests. Rooms were clean and above average for a hostel at this price.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
