United backpackers was incredibly clean. The bed was awesome and comfy and I met some incredible people just by going to breakfast. Also has a great bar just down stairs and you couldn't ask for a better location.
Get around it.
Awesome hostel where everyone is super friendly. If you are looking for a lively but also relaxed atmosphere then this is your place to be. United Backpackers is very close to public transport and shopping opportunities. Have fun and enjoy!
The best thing that can make your trip is buy having amazing staff, and these guys have it from the full timers to the part timers :)

Good location, opposite Flinders Street station. Very friendly and helpful staff. I booked a private room with ensuite, it was perfect with a nice shower and tea/coffee and kettle. My 9 year old daughter was pleased that there was a t.v. in the room. All...More
The pillow and blanket here were the best that I have ever had in hostels! Clean environment and nice bar downstairs. Also, the location was amazing too! You can easily get to train/tram station by foot and it only takes few minutes!

Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air
of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.

They're pretty big but honestly most of the ladies in my dorm (ladies only dorm) used them for valuables and left our clothes in our bags by the side of beds it was much easier access. Admittedly less secure and 1 or 2 items of clothing for some ladies went missing but I didn't have a problem. you can always keep ur bag locked too if it won't all fit in the locker.
