My wife and I spent a night in Toad Hall after it was recommended by a friend. The double room was basic, but comfortable enough for a short-term stay; the location is convenient to good cafes and shopping; and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We may well stay there again on our next visit to Melbourne.

I stayed in this hotel with my partner during seven days in May-June 2004. It is a good, simple and reasonably clean place. It had a double bed, bedside table, lamp, sink, heater (electric, portable) and fridge. If you are carrying heavy luggage, be prepared, as the hotel does not have lifts/elevators (yes, it is an old building). As we...

we were very impressed with ToadHall, the tidiness and cleaniness. the kitchen was great, hotwater supply was very reliable. it was nicely quiet and friendly. we recommand that ToadHall is a wonderful place to stay for all ages at resonable cost in the centre of Melbourne. Ear-pluges are recommanded for people who stay in rooms next to the streets.

Toad Hall was really nice, clean, the WC and shower facilities were excellent. Couldn't have asked for more really. Very good value for money.

I had an absolute wicked time at ToadHall. Although the price of a hostel bed is dearer than most in Melbourne the rooms were clean, tidy and felt like a hotel instead of the normal run of the mill pit. Most dorms had ensuite bathrooms and the rooms are single sex. However the only disappointing factors were the staff, on...

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
