The Lyall was a great location for really nice restaurants nearby (highly recommend the pizza at Versachi and the pasta at Cucinetta, both available to take away). The staff was not as attentive or friendly as in other places we've stayed in Australia and the hotel is a bit outdated and perhaps a tad overpriced given the current state, but overall a good stay.
Booked as part of Mr Mrs Smith portfolio. Surprised it was part of their group. Decor tired, rooms drab. Location not great 10 minutes by train into Melbourne centre. Surrounding area/ shops seem to be on downward trend... empty shops lots of fast food restaurants. Would probably suit business person on a longer stay, who would prefer a ‘suite’ with kitchen and sitting area. But... staff very helpful and good service.
This hotel is very well located in South Yarra, close to shops and restaurants, but is most definitely not a 5-star hotel. I booked this hotel during the Australian Open due to its suite setup and recommendation from Mr and Mrs Smith, but my family arrived and immediately started calling other hotels in the area asking for availability upon seeing the setup. Unfortunately, due to the tournament, nothing else was available. The rooms were worn and dated - very few outlets in the rooms, DVD player for the outdated TV, hot water kettle was broken, multiple lights were out, our shower door was taped with duct tape. There is no valet area or driveway for the hotel. Staff were friendly and responsive, but the hotel itself has not been a 5-star hotel for many, many years. I feel the hotel really misrepresents itself online - there are four or five tables set up in the lobby area for breakfast, no real restaurant or bar. I have also contacted Mr and Mrs Smith instructing them to modify their description of this hotel. If you are looking for a 3-star accommodation in South Yarra for a family, this might be your spot. This hotel is about the level of a Marriott Residence Inn, but much less modern.…
Beautiful, spotless rooms and great service. Location was perfect, in a quiet street and about 20m from Chapel St. surrounded by good restaurants and shopping. Breakfast was memorable! Will definitely stay here again.
We were travelling through Australia and I booked this hotel with high hopes of the description - a boutique hotel frequented by the likes of Olivia Newton John. On arrival, the location looked great and the outside of the building was promising. Having been shown to our room, have to say I was underwhelmed. The decor was drab and tired. Stains were found on the sofa and carpet. The bathroom could do with a refit with dirty grout in the tiles, a chip in the bath and smeared glass on the shower. Cheap coffee sachets had been left in the kitchen area. No docking station to play music. The bar area wasn’t anything special and I noticed a huge cobweb on the ceiling above me whilst I had a glass of wine. We paid over $350 per night for this hotel and would have to say it was over-priced for what you got. I see the hotel has received similar feedback so I really think it’s time the hotel got it’s renovation. Such a shame as the area of South Yarra was lovely and offered so much…
We stayed here for 3 nights, I felt that the hotel was not quite as luxury as set out on the website, but don't get me wrong, it is a lovely hotel. The staff were lovely, if not quite as attentive as at other hotels. The kitchen had a washing machine in which had been screwed shut which was a bit odd. Would happily stay again and in a lovely location in South Yarra
Not quite sure what to write in this review as I have said it all before in previous reviews of the Lyall. This is our go to hotel when we fancy a trip into town from the Yarra Valley We have never been disappointed. The rooms are spacious, well appointed with everything you might need and the beds are extremely comfortable. The staff are well trained, efficient and friendly. The breakfast menu offers an excellent choice and breakfast is served long after most other hotels have finished their breakfast service, very nice for those of us who aren't early risers. One more thing, the bar serves single glass bottles of Moet Chandon which my wife is VERY pleased about. We will be back in August
We were really looking forward to staying 2 nights at the Lyall. The website looked v impressive, we assumed we would be staying at a cool cutting edge trendy boutique hotel. We arrived at 9 pm and our first impressions from the outside were good. The building us attractive in a nice area ( South Yarra) but once we had to haul all our luggage to our room we realised that this was not going to be a 5* experience. We were given a 2 bed 2 bathroom “apartment” for us and our 2 kids ( 24 and 21). The living room was Ok with a proper kitchenette but the bedrooms and bathrooms were Small, tired and depressing. The decor and feel of the Accommodation was so different from the impression given on line - it is amazing they have got away with this for so long. The staff ( ie the one man who seems to do everything from front desk to waiter and bell boy) were very obliging and pleasant but really this is not a cool chic 5* city boutique hotel - it is a 3* Lodging with little charm and only brief and superficial style which is brilliantly overstated on their website. The best things about the Lyall are the mega Jelly Babies bowl on the front desk and the coffee at breakfast. Both - world class! Having said all this - the Lyall is nicely located if you want to avoid the CBD - And be nearer to the St Kilda’s beach area. Its not a bad hotel - its just not a 5* “Special” experience which is a shame as if some serious Renovation and design money is invested into it - it could be what it says on line as it is actually a very nice property.…
I loved this boutique hotel.. It is so perfectly situated. The staff are great and the massage was amazing. I love the feel of this hotel - its just gorgeous and has everything you need without feeling like you are in a big hotel.
This Hotel is a true gem ~ Joanne and I stayed there recently - it was our first visit but I can guarantee it won't be our last! We booked a single bedroom suite and loved everything about it. A home away from home and so central to the best South Yarra has on offer and a stones throw from the CBD.
