The Lyall was a great location for really nice restaurants nearby (highly recommend the pizza at Versachi and the pasta at Cucinetta, both available to take away). The staff was not as attentive or friendly as in other places we've stayed in Australia and the hotel is a bit outdated and perhaps a tad overpriced given the current state, but overall a good stay.

Booked as part of Mr Mrs Smith portfolio. Surprised it was part of their group. Decor tired, rooms drab. Location not great 10 minutes by train into Melbourne centre. Surrounding area/ shops seem to be on downward trend... empty shops lots of fast food restaurants. Would probably suit business person on a longer stay, who would prefer a ‘suite’ with kitchen and sitting area. But... staff very helpful and good service.

Dear traveller 1198, Thank you for your feedback, it is appreciated. The Lyall is an urban boutique hotel with a city fringe, South Yarra address. The experience is to "Live Like a Local" and if you don't need to be in the CBD, its a pleasant option to be surrounded by greenery but still enjoy the easy access to city centre. South Yarra is a village with a great array of world class shops and restaurants. We provide our guests with a Restaurant Guide which we compile and a an Exclusive Shopping Privilege Card to introduce guests to the local offerings. Toorak Road (our location) is thriving. i'm sorry to read that you found the decor tired, we will be conducting a refurbishment this year. With kind regards, Rowina T Hotelier

This hotel is very well located in South Yarra, close to shops and restaurants, but is most definitely not a 5-star hotel. I booked this hotel during the Australian Open due to its suite setup and recommendation from Mr and Mrs Smith, but my family arrived and immediately started calling other hotels in the area asking for availability upon seeing the setup. Unfortunately, due to the tournament, nothing else was available. The rooms were worn and dated - very few outlets in the rooms, DVD player for the outdated TV, hot water kettle was broken, multiple lights were out, our shower door was taped with duct tape. There is no valet area or driveway for the hotel. Staff were friendly and responsive, but the hotel itself has not been a 5-star hotel for many, many years. I feel the hotel really misrepresents itself online - there are four or five tables set up in the lobby area for breakfast, no real restaurant or bar. I have also contacted Mr and Mrs Smith instructing them to modify their description of this hotel. If you are looking for a 3-star accommodation in South Yarra for a family, this might be your spot. This hotel is about the level of a Marriott Residence Inn, but much less modern.

Dear Reana T, Thank you for your feedback on your stay during the Australian Open. I am sorry that we did not meet your expectations on this visit. I'm glad to read that you found our staff responsive, they were able to resolve the housekeeping issues that you had. We are working on an extensive refurbishment for this year. Several soft refurbishments have been carried out since opening in 2002, the last being curtains, bedheads and cushions in suites and refresh of the public areas which included carpet in 2017. The hotel has been styled in contemporary oriental design with quality timeless finishes rather than mass produced cheaper furniture and fittings. The Lyall is a boutique hotel in the true sense of the word, we have 40 suites, a small all-day bistro space and champagne bar, we also serve meals on the terrace and in The Library. Our kitchen is open 24 hours for room service and our Lyall Spa is award winning. This is the typical Mr & Mrs Smith hotel. Our guests enjoy its intimate atmosphere and having the staff greet them by name. The Lyall does have a valet parking zone and a driveway. With kind regards, Rowina T Hotelier

We were travelling through Australia and I booked this hotel with high hopes of the description - a boutique hotel frequented by the likes of Olivia Newton John. On arrival, the location looked great and the outside of the building was promising. Having been shown to our room, have to say I was underwhelmed. The decor was drab and tired. Stains were found on the sofa and carpet. The bathroom could do with a refit with dirty grout in the tiles, a chip in the bath and smeared glass on the shower. Cheap coffee sachets had been left in the kitchen area. No docking station to play music. The bar area wasn’t anything special and I noticed a huge cobweb on the ceiling above me whilst I had a glass of wine. We paid over $350 per night for this hotel and would have to say it was over-priced for what you got. I see the hotel has received similar feedback so I really think it’s time the hotel got it’s renovation. Such a shame as the area of South Yarra was lovely and offered so much

We stayed here for 3 nights, I felt that the hotel was not quite as luxury as set out on the website, but don't get me wrong, it is a lovely hotel. The staff were lovely, if not quite as attentive as at other hotels. The kitchen had a washing machine in which had been screwed shut which was a bit odd. Would happily stay again and in a lovely location in South Yarra

Dear Guest, Thank you for taking the time to review your recent stay at The Lyall, we appreciate your feedback. We are delighted that you enjoyed the hotel, our staff and location. We have removed some of the washing machines from suites as the model is now obsolete and there is no other model to fit the space. We have created a guest laundry to compensate while we look for replacement. We also provide a 7 day laundry service which is a paid same day service. Thank you for choosing to stay at The Lyall and we hope to welcome you back in the near future. Warmest wishes, Rowina T Hotelier

Not quite sure what to write in this review as I have said it all before in previous reviews of the Lyall. This is our go to hotel when we fancy a trip into town from the Yarra Valley We have never been disappointed. The rooms are spacious, well appointed with everything you might need and the beds are extremely comfortable. The staff are well trained, efficient and friendly. The breakfast menu offers an excellent choice and breakfast is served long after most other hotels have finished their breakfast service, very nice for those of us who aren't early risers. One more thing, the bar serves single glass bottles of Moet Chandon which my wife is VERY pleased about. We will be back in August

Thank you for highlighting the spaciousness of the suites and comfort of our beds. We're glad you like our breakfast menu and our later serving hours (nothing worse than having to set the alarm so as not to miss breakfast) . We do have a great team, thank you for mentioning their friendliness and efficiency. I'm am so pleased that your wife likes our 'mini Moet" 200ml bottle which we serve when a flute of champagne is ordered. We were really looking forward to staying 2 nights at the Lyall. The website looked v impressive, we assumed we would be staying at a cool cutting edge trendy boutique hotel. We arrived at 9 pm and our first impressions from the outside were good. The building us attractive in a nice area ( South Yarra) but once we had to haul all our luggage to our room we realised that this was not going to be a 5* experience. We were given a 2 bed 2 bathroom “apartment” for us and our 2 kids ( 24 and 21). The living room was Ok with a proper kitchenette but the bedrooms and bathrooms were Small, tired and depressing. The decor and feel of the Accommodation was so different from the impression given on line - it is amazing they have got away with this for so long. The staff ( ie the one man who seems to do everything from front desk to waiter and bell boy) were very obliging and pleasant but really this is not a cool chic 5* city boutique hotel - it is a 3* Lodging with little charm and only brief and superficial style which is brilliantly overstated on their website. The best things about the Lyall are the mega Jelly Babies bowl on the front desk and the coffee at breakfast. Both - world class! Having said all this - the Lyall is nicely located if you want to avoid the CBD - And be nearer to the St Kilda’s beach area. Its not a bad hotel - its just not a 5* “Special” experience which is a shame as if some serious Renovation and design money is invested into it - it could be what it says on line as it is actually a very nice property.

Dear AndrewB, Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts on your recent stay, your feedback is appreciated. While i'm glad that you chose to stay at The Lyall from what you saw on the website i am disappointed to read that the experience did not meet your expectations. We do always escort our guests to their suite with their luggage, so i am looking into this and apologise as i imagine with four adults there would have been quite a bit of luggage. Not a Lyallstyle welcome. We are currently working on a complete refurb including bathrooms which will happen this year. We did replace bedheads, curtains and cushions two years ago which did freshen up the suites. i am sincerely sorry for your experience and hope that the rest of your stay in Melbourne was enjoyable. We would welcome the opportunity to impress you when our refurb is complete. With thanks, Rowina

This Hotel is a true gem ~ Joanne and I stayed there recently - it was our first visit but I can guarantee it won't be our last! We booked a single bedroom suite and loved everything about it. A home away from home and so central to the best South Yarra has on offer and a stones throw from the CBD.
