Pros: Big spacious room. Exceptionally clean. Very helpful check in/check out staff. Great location. Beautifully appointed hotel inside and out. Large bathroom with amenities. Perfect for a weekend away of luxury and relaxation. Cons: USB charging points within the room - I was surprised that a 5 star property was lacking this technological upgrade for the modern day. Overall, I loved this hotel and would definitely stay again. Warm hosts throughout the property and there is a lot of attention to detail to make it a memorable experience.
It is great to have this beautiful hotel open once again. After a long absence the Intercontinental is back. Although some hotel services are still limited there is no denying the wonderful ambience of the great hotel. My stay was in a junior Suite. Very spacious with a king bed, work area and large wardrobe. Extra large bathroom with a terrific power shower- a great way to start the day. Club Intercontinental is back with warm and friendly staff for evening canapes. Extensive choice for breakfast each morning with coffee you can't beat. Easy walk to shopping, trams and laneways.
Being Platinum Ambassador level we were upgraded to a lovely 1 bedroom suite. The room was nice but can tell it is starting to be a bit tired. We came for a 2 night weekend stay. Breakfast was excellent with service and food. There is no real dining options which is hotel run after 7pm, and the bar on the main level is closed. The club lounge was very strange, we arrived at 3:45pm and was told it is closed now but afternoon tea is 2-4pm, so unwelcoming we were lucky to get a couple of scones with a tiny bit of jam and a super tiny skirt of tin cream in a tiny dish. Evening drinks are 5-7pm, food was very basic for the cold food, the hot food was 2 arancini balls and 3 small spring rolls and horrible. And last drinks we were told at 6.40pm. The next day for afternoon tea we arrived at 2pm and what a waste of time, for 3 people you can sea the picture that I uploaded which was very disappointing. And we didn't even bother going back the next day for afternoon tea. Again 5-7pm club lounge drinks cold food was a bit better, they even had cheese knives this time. The single tray of hot food was 3 spring rolls and 2 prawn sticks. Again last drinks at 6:35pm...... I guess they had to get home early again. I normally leave a tip for lounge staff but not here. Worst club lounge I have ever been to and you can tell the hotel doesn't real have a restaurant or kitchen. Also had to wait till after 4pm to have room made up after being out the whole day. While we were waiting near our room the cleaning person just let 4 men walk into our room before realising they had the wrong room which was one floor above.... really the cleaning person saw us leave.... myself , wife and daughter in hotel robe. We will be back after spending $770 a night.…
I had great hopes for this hotel, I walked in and it looks very impressive (if not a bit prison-like though). I cannot fault the staff, every single person I spoke to was helpful, polite, efficient and a fabulous asset to the hotel. We stayed on the club floor, there was a cigarette smell to the corridor but not in the room. The room was small and dark (due to facing inwards) but was quiet and the bed was lovely and comfy. For a 5 star club room, I would have loved some slippers. I have seen comments about wanting bottles of water but Melbourne water is so good, you don’t need them. The club lounge afternoon tea is a bit lacking, the staff again were great but for one person it was two tiny square sandwiches, 3 tiny choux pastries and a scone. Very underwhelming. The worst part of the stay was the pool, it was cloudy and filthy. There was debris on the bottom that looked like bits of skin. One of the pool lights had come away from the wall and was floating on the surface still attached by a wire to a hole in the wall. The spa also had jets half in and out of the water and just didn’t seem to work well. The breakfast was great and I couldn’t fault it. I think the rooms need modernising and the pool sorting and it would be better. As it stands, it just doesn’t feel like a hotel intercontinental hotel.…
I have stayed at the Melbourne Intercontinental Rialto many times over the past two decades and it has been my Melbourne home. Unfortunately its use as a Covid hotel over the past two years has prevented staying at this hotel during my frequent trips to Melbourne. As an IHG Royal Ambassador, it was with much anticipation that I returned there recently, booked in for a 6 night stay. Without detailing a litany of things that went wrong during my stay, I will stick to the bigger issue failures. Interestingly, during the conversations with 3 different duty managers, all disclosed that the hotel is experiencing staffing problems. One even said that new customers have no comparison to previous standards, while returning regulars had been noticing the huge decline. Of the many failures I experienced, five problems stand out: 1) as a returning Royal Ambassador there was no welcome letter or card, and no welcome water and fruit platter. 2) the club lounge is closed most of the day and only open for two 2-hour time slots for afternoon tea and evening canapés (which were frankly pathetic) 3) there is no turn down service 4) the hotel is basically worn out, tired and battered from years of accumulated wear and tear accelerated in the last 2 years as a lockdown hotel 5) on the second day, my room still hadn’t been serviced by 2pm despite my being out of the room. When I asked the lone cleaner I found on my floor, he informed me that my suite wasn’t on his list. I had to return to the front desk and duty manager to request my room to be made up. After two days of numerous failures and growing frustration, I decided to cut my losses and ended what would have been a 6 night stay. Alternate accommodation was sourced and sadly, I moved on.…
We stayed 2 nights including club level. Rooms were good size but ours faced internally. It's an old building with lovely features. Breakfast was amazing. Including in Club level offers an afternoon high tea and evening cocktails and canapés. Vanessa who worked in this lounge was super helpful to us as when I booked I was told we could bring my 9 year old to the evening cocktails, but this was not the case. Nevertheless, Vanessa made our time there enjoyable. Location is great with a tram stop just out the front. All trams are free with the city circle. Short stoll to the Bourke Street mall and a short walk to Southern cross station where you can get the Skybus to and from the airport. Pool area is a little tired.
Coming back to this hotel after a few years, felt no time had passed. Still has the charm it always had, very clean hotel. Staff were very friendly and always there if needed. I always felt that you get value out of this hotel. Great buffet breakfast. Everything fresh and perfect that way it’s always been. Chef is on hand to make eggs the way you want to whip up an omelette. Bring your own juice bar still here, and wonderful coffee from the barista. I really enjoyed staying here. It’s in my top 3 hotels in Melbourne. Tip.: It does pay to be a member of the IHG group before booking your stay.
This hotel has such an incredible ambiance, given the architectural history and modern updating of the giant atrium that unites two older buildings, and the modern updating of the rooms. Would stay here in a heartbeat the next time in Melbourne. Great location, great breakfast, comfortable bed, nice pool. Friendly and very helpful staff. The tram on the street outside are free to get around the city. Best hotel of our visit to AUS/NZ!
The is another one of the prominent architect William Pitt buildings. Like the Olderfleet Building at 477 Collins Street it was built for prominent businessman Patrick Mc Caughan between 1890-1891. It is built in Venetian Gothic palazzo style. The original bluestone cobblestone laneway which served the carts and wagons delivering wool and other products to the Rialto building warehouses, survives intact on the ground floor of the atrium of the hotel. The 14 storey building part of the hotel complex was part of the redevelopment in 1984. It is one of the finest boom style buildings in Melbourne. The Intercontinental Hotel was the Former Rialto Hotel when I stayed there and before that was the Ex Menzies Hotel. It is a five star hotel and has exclusive shops and before the corona virus had a big white piano in the atrium space. It is on the Victorian Heritage Register and is National Trust classified…
Great location, 5-10mins walk to Southern Cross Station, within free tram zone, easily go around CBD without paying. Booked the deluxe room, as a Spire Ambassador, the receptionist claimed the room was upgrade to club room (with no club access tho), did not really see the big differences. Being arranged a room on 5th floor, with the only view of the hotel atrium. Room was set up with one set of bathroom amenities and glasses, one free water per day only. It looked like a room for one person but I booked it for three persons. iPad in the room allowed me to request amenities and looked for hotel info easily. Pool, gym, sauna were all on top floor, indoor pool was pretty small but with a nice Jacuzzi next to it. Sauna and shower room were unisex. No lockers for pool area. Valet parking was great. 55AUD for 24 hours, concierge has asked me the pickup for next day, car was ready in front of the entrance when I collected it. Great service! Breakfast was okay, live station for egg, some hot food and great options for juices and freshly squeezed ones. Celebrating parents anniversary, a sparkling wine was offered on their anniversary date! Very warm and sweet, thank you!…
