An interstate couple I know stayed at the Sofia about three years ago. They reported it was shambolic. Recently another interstate friend stayed there, having chosen the hotel online because it offered all the usual hotel facilities and budget rates. I was horrified by her reports. She experienced all of the problems listed by the most recent reviewer, Bec. Worse... More

Construction outside the rear room window, told they would not be there on the weekend and low and behold we were woken at 6am again...asked to move rooms but apparently hotel 'full'. Room has not been cleaned in two days despite asking for it to be... No one seems to ever be on reception... Showers water pressure ridiculously slow. Won't... More

The hotel was close to Southern Cross Station, within walking distance of the city and trams, however the area had quiet a few 'mens' clubs'. Rooms were modern, clean and comfortable with an adequate buffet breakfast included. No Wifi included in the price. Good value for the price, but book something more expensive if you are looking for more salubrious... More

This hotel is centrally located, and most of the other clientele were very friendly for my stay. Just be aware that you are in a dodgy strip-club area and there will be noise all night. My decent size room was well maintained and stocked by the happy cleaner, but the management seems to ignore the existing ancient frayed carpets and... More

Booked the hotel on line in advance of our first trip from the US to Australia. We had one overnight in Melbourne and booked the Hotel Sofia. We received confirmation for the reservation and notice that our credit card had been charged from the hotel. Everything looked good and we started our trip. The day before we were to check... More

I have never written a review in my life, but this has to be known for the other people who may consider this place... So here's the story. We arrived about 7:30pm on Monday evening and went to check in. There was no one at the front desk. We waited for about 10 mins before someone appeared. Our booking was... More

Whilst this hotel is far from first class the value for money is second to none. $100 AUD on average includes a cooked brekky. if you are looking for opulence then this is not for you BUT if you want somewhere with value then jump on it. Rooms are small but clean and tidy, good quality linens on the beds... More

Pros - Good clean room though it is small - Very good location - Price wise good as well Cons - Service almost non existent If you are looking to roam around in Melbourne without spending too much time in the room, then this a very good option. Only thing I would recommend to this hotel would be to atleast... More

we booked this online and although it was in the centre of clubland it was okay for our stay. The room was a bit small but you get what you pay for. Staff were helpful and Breakfast was good. When we were there the lift broke so it kept us fit climbing 4 flights of stairs.

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
