I spent several weeks considering which hostel to stay at in Melbourne and in the end i chose to book a room for two at King Street Backpackers. I was rather concerned as there were quite a few negative reviews about this place and being an older couple who have been backpacking for 4 decades did not want to be... More

Upon reading some reviews I think this hostel has a bad wrap for things that are just part of hostel life. As a backpacker hostel, it's basic but cheap and friendly. Staff are top notch! 24hr reception which isn't massively common with independent hostels. Had a nice homie feel to it. I will admit I was a bit on edge... More

This is the worst hostel I've ever stayed in my life . Simply terrible . dirty bathroom and smelly 24 hours a day. infernal and noisy ventilation inside the room. Dirt everywhere . The assessment on Booking is misleading. Terrible. Requested reimbursement to change hostel and the answer was: no refund . Do not stay in this place. There are... More

I was staying here for 4 nights and didn't really enjoy it because it looked literally like it hasn't been cleaned at all for at least a year. The hostel is located in the alley and there were a group of teenagers and motorbike gang hanging out until 4 in the morning every night and I couldn't sleep. I wouldn't... More

I visited this place in march 2016. excellent weather, warm people at reception, good vibe, cost effective(i am indian :P), made brilliant friends, also has another back packer across street so you can meet more people (if that's the objective) also has 7/11 right next to backpackers.clean kitchen, my tour bus couldn't find it difficult to pick me up from... I did some research and I was going to stay at somewhere for $23 a night. However I wasn't feeling well and I found this hotel was on the way so ended up staying there. It wasn't cheap. $28. $5 more than the one I found. I really should have walk a bit further!! First impression entering the room was... More

This is quite honestly one of the best hostels I have ever stayed at! I stayed at King Street for almost two months and would definitely have stayed longer if it wasn't for moving to an apartment. It's perfectly located near Southern Cross station and various tram stops so it's easy to get around. The facilities are great. The kitchen... More

What I liked: - rooms are okay - helpful staff - free pancakes on sundays - sometimes free m&ms - good location - clean kitchen -friendly atmosphere What I didn't like: - a little bit unorganized: had to switch room when I added a night to my stay - wifi didn't work in the rooms

NEVER book this hostel. Hair in the bed sheets and wet stains on the bed upon arrival, no ventilation apart from a dust filled gap in the room door. The wifi didn't even work. The people working there were rude rude rude. Incredibly unhappy. Take my advice AND NEVER BOOK HERE!

Booking system of rooms is unacceptable. A very busy weekend in Melbourne for me and had 1 bed booked, only to receive an email at 23:11 on the day before check in that they don't have any beds available! Now left searching high and low for a bed for the night... 😑

Hello Emma, We are sorry for the break down in communication that lead to misunderstanding the booking procedure and the following confusion. The room you initially tried to book was full so we took a little longer than usual to reply to your booking request as we were looking for an alternative to offer you. Once we found an alternative... More

Staying in Central Business District

Neighborhood Profile
Central Business District
Full of discovery and delight, Melbourne’s laneways tease the imagination long after you’ve put your weary feet up to rest. They weave through the heart of the city: cafes, bars, restaurants and boutiques, throbbing with conversation and espresso coffee. You never quite know what you’ll find around the next corner: cobblestone alleys, old beer barrel hoists and even vats of simmering organic soup. There is the air of Berlin in the street art, a touch of Paris in the umbrella-shaded cafes and, reminiscent of Rome, eateries tucked away in the most unlikely of places. Perhaps you might want a break and cross the Yarra River to Southbank - walk along the promenade, bask in the sun at a waterside bar and decide whether to go to the nearby casino or book a ticket at the Melbourne theatre company.
