There are some large and expensive resorts in Port Douglas. This isn't one of them. It is a typical motor inn tucked away on a side street about 1 km from Port Douglas (5 mins in car to the wharf). The rooms are quite large with kitchenette, and at first I thought it was going to be too hot inside...

Hi there 307D! Thank you both for your wonderful review and thank you for choosing to stay with us. We trust that you left refreshed and relaxed? It was great to see you making such good use of the local shuttle buses. We used to have only 1 in town, but now there are 5 or 6 companies running buses...

A clean basic comfortable and quiet hotel. The room is fairly large and well equipped with plates and kitchen utensils, microwave oven and mini refrigerator. The air conditioner is quiet and there is a ceiling fan in the room. The only drawback for us was that without a car, the hotel is about a 15-20 minute walk to the marina...

Thank you Alexx_10 for taking the time to write your review and thank you for choosing to stay with us. Unfortunately, we cannot change our location, but there are local shuttle buses that run every 15-20 minutes all day long and will take you around for $3-$4. Alternatively, our free bicycles are in great demand and make it an easy,...

Very large, very clean, very well equipped room. The bed was possibly the most comfortable I've had in a hotel. I think it was better than mine! Very efficient check-in and out and very helpful and friendly staff. Bit of a way into town but we had a car so no probs. We liked it so much we've already booked...

We were pleasantly surprised by the facilities here. Nothing was too much trouble for Aidan to arrange. On site laundry and cycle hire is a huge bonus, the main strip of shops is a 20 minute walk away. The whole place is beautiful especially the marina. I would definitely recommend the Lazy Lizard as a place to stay. This was...

We enjoyed a hassle free stay and found the Lazy Lizard to be clean and although basic it ticked all the boxes. Parking could be an issue especially with the larger rental vehicles but we were lucky as most parking bays were vacant when we stayed. Enjoyed our stay and would return. Pool was excellent and open till 9.30pm And...

Indianapolis, Indiana, United States

Hello,

we have questions! First time trip, from Indiana. We have 10 days total, which boils down to 8 nights on the Continent of Australia when factoring in air travel from the U.S.

Q1: I hear about Stingers, but I don't know what they are?

Q2: what is the season for Stingers? We could come in late July or lat November. I am leaning toward late November for reasons that you'll see in later questions.

Q3: My initial plan was: 4 nights in Port Douglas, which would involve two days snorkeling the GBR, and one day to explore the Daintree rain forest. We would spend our 4th night in Port Douglas after a day in Daintree, next morning we would fly to Lady Elliot island and spend 3 nights there. Snorkel two days there. Fly to Sydney, take a train to Katoomba. Spend one night there, explore the entire next day and near dinnertime, take the train back to Sydney. Spend the night in Sydney and fly back to Indiana next day. Finally the question: this trip could happen late July or late November. I think November is better because Lady Elliot is colder waters than the Cairns area. Is it true that we could be on the GBR just walking off the beach at Lady Elliot? Am I over-rating that experience? Would we bet better off staying in Port Douglas for all of our four days of snorkeling?

Q4: Being a naive first-timer, what important logistics am I not aware of? Is my plan overall too aggressive? P.S. I have no interest in cities. Only nature. I'm not made of money and I realize Lady Elliot will not be cheap, but I also don't know how expensive airfare will be just to get on the island.

Q5: There will be three of us: me (age 56), my 16-year old, and my 20-year old. The 20-year old can sleep on a bed of nails, haha, he wouldn't care if he had a roll-away cot. What kind of room would you suggest for us at your place?

Thanks!
