It’s rare to find a place where location and accommodation align with an individual feel. The Old Clare, as the name suggests, has character and plenty of it. The rooms are very spacious and well thought out. The pool and bar on the top floor is amazing as is the fact you can go downstairs to an old school, tiled bar. The staff here are edgy but incredibly friendly and helpful. Next to the hotel is a great lane way full of great eateries - definitely try Spice Alley. The Old Clare is in a brilliant area of Sydney and will suit business, couples and family.

Spent Saturday night here with 3 friends for a girls weekend. We stayed in a Connell room and a Loft room. We asked for twin rooms and this was provided- the beds in the Connell room were larger singles… Highlights were the incredible pillows, the in house toiletries from Triumph & Disaster and the lovely photos of the hotel prior to the refurbishment that adorned the hotel throughout. We had a few drinks at the Rooftop bar. Had contemplated a swim but, although the website says it’s a heated pool, it definitely wasn’t - it was freezing. Plus the proximity to drinkers at the bar would put off all but the supremely self confident. Perhaps 7am laps in summer is more the scene… Staff on front desk were ok - friendly but I think fairly new so some of the questions were met with a slightly bemused response. Great location for dining and overall a pleasant stay.

My husband and I stayed here recently for our anniversary and were totally impressed by the service and amenities of the Old Clare. We’ve stayed in quite a few hotels in the Sydney CBD and this one stood out for the beautiful accommodation space and the thoughtful, attentive service. The guy who checked us in (I’m so sorry to have missed his name) was friendly and enthusiastic, sharing the history of the hotel (e.g. did you know the two bars upstairs and downstairs were once segregated male/female spaces and the women were charged DOUBLE at their bar?!). We were also upgraded to the loft suite which we were really grateful for. The suite itself was gorgeous and clean - the bed is one of the comfiest I’ve ever slept in. One really handy thing that I haven’t seen in other hotels is that both televisions had Chromecast, which meant that we could cast off our phones and continue the shows we’ve been watching. Checkout was swift and easy and we felt attended to throughout our stay. Thanks Old Clare for giving these tired parents a night to remember!

Friday night, 10pm visit. Three couples. Despite holding this venue in high regard for a while…last night was just too difficult to enjoy. We were given 6 menus at our table - however, it seemed a pointless exercise. As the menu meant nothing. At 10pm you can not buy a cocktail. “It’s too late for us to make cocktails”, I was told. At 10pm you can not buy a bottle of wine. Unless, everyone comes to stand at the bar, and then the whole bottle of wine gets poured into 4 glasses. Now, I like a glass of wine…but I don’t need to drink it “bucket” style with a glass that full. Not really how you enjoy wine. Then you have to pay, before you are allowed to order your final drink. Which was a Bailey’s on ice, which another bar tender kindly made as he could tell his colleague was not doing a great job by throwing her rule book at me. Apparently, these “rules” were being applied because of a small wedding party also in the bar. Their rules are their rules….and I can’t change that. I just wouldn’t recommend anyone go there.

Nice rooms, well decorated. Roof bar was nice but pool was very exposed to drinkers. Would not have been keen to swim there. Arrived at hotel to be told we had a twin room when we booked a king. Had to argue quite hard and duty manager fixed it in the end and gave us a free drink. Desk staff were rude until we got the manager involved. Stayed here 6 years prior and was better then. The deterioration is mainly staff quality and service.

I stayed at the old Clare for 1 night in April. Not sure why but without my consent and me being present they have billed my card for a room which I didn’t book. Was promised a call back from the GM and it has been two weeks … haven’t heard anything but I’ve chosen to let it go as the refund has came through. However 3 weeks post my stay they’ve gone ahead and billed another charge to my card and have no clue what that was for???? In summary, they’re breaching all sorts of financial and data compliance due to lack of management and attention to details. Will not stay again. Ever!

Cool hip hotel but the front desk people aren’t trained properly and are a bit rude. It was a hit or miss depending who was managing the front. We arrived prior to check in time and was told before 3pm we would get a text saying our room was ready. Come 3pm and we never received anything. When we confronted the front desk about it the woman with long black hair said we have to WAIT more with a tone and a hand motion of STOP. Kind of rude. Half of us got our room the other half waited another half hour and they lost our luggage for 20 minutes. Some of us got gift bags and the others didn’t. When I asked them about it they acted like they didn’t know what I was talking about even though I saw the gift bag right next to them. I would ask for water at night and the front desk was always flustered not knowing my request. They don’t carry water bottles so I’d have to explain just water in a pitcher is fine. Everytime it was a new person they didn’t understand. I also filmed COCKROACHES in the hallway on the second floor. I showed the video to the front desk and they said oh. Thanks. That’s it. When it came to check out I never received my final bill. I was told they would email it to me and days went by without anything. I called them and the girl said she’ll have to tell the other person to email me because she doesn’t know what she’s doing. Exact words she said. She also complained because I was calling with an American phone number and said my number was confusing to save. Days go by and nothing. I call back and get a man and he said they never had my email on file and that he just sent it. Maybe because I booked through a third party vendor? At this point I’m just annoyed with the lack of communication and professionalism from their staff.

The Old Clare has been our go to city hotel for a number of years. We love the history, style, location and the great staff. We stay when we go to concerts in the city and or other major events. Our room has always been spotless and there are good bars and facilities. The hotel is close to Central Station and wonderful dining locations in Sydney, including Spice Alley right next door. Hotel breakfast is always a must do for us and never disappoints. This stay was special in that we were en route to catch a flight to London. First time in just on three years thanks to Covid. This time I managed to leave key documents, I thought in the Taxi they had called. I rang the hotel seeking help to locate the driver. They actually located my documents at the hotel and sent a staff member to the airport and point blank refused to bill me despite my asking them to do so. I cannot thank them enough. They truly do go above and beyond.

Everything written about this Hotel is misleading: Their Covid rules are misleading: The Hotel doesn't have safety emergency measures to coincide with their new so-called Covid Health rules... Staff, not adequately trained and very naive: Rooms are not clean: Glass petition walls as Bathrooms walls are not private and dangerous: We didn't eat there when we noticed food left in hallways: Staff came across as insensitive because they have not been trained to cope with all customers as individuals ... They are trained to treat everyone as the same... Like sheep... When reading reviews we note that the Hotel has responded to most reviews ... Some responses read as very arrogant hence the issues they have with training... "It all starts at the top"

Pictures of rooms and suits are misleading, very expensive, questions will fall on deaf ears and you will be left feeling stressed and ripped off. The App for room service wasn't working and reception didn't answer our morning call for coffee, reverted to pod machine which was busted (see picture for creative tea bag strainer experiment) then we left to get a nice coffee! Definitely explore other boujee options.

Response from Timo Bures, General Manager at The Old Clare Hotel
Responded Dec 1, 2021
Hi M9850AVandreal, Thank you for staying and also thank you for the review. We do, of course, want all our guests to be happy, and we're always keen to hear feedback. I must admit that, in your case, we are a little flabbergasted: We have a smorgasbord of different rooms, which sometimes means, that not all rooms within all categories can be depicted on our website. However, the particular room you stayed in, is photographed and displayed in quite some detail on our site, I hence am uncertain how the photos are deemed to be misleading. In addition, while I greatly admire the MacGyver-esque inventiveness of building a filter coffee machine, both the room service app and the Nespresso machine in the room are working well. I tried both of them personally before writing back to you. I understand, we were not able to help with the desired complimentary upgrade request on check-in, and that this may have impacted how much you enjoyed your stay and this may have impacted the feedback too. All that said, I would truly appreciate to be able to assist better and would ask that you contact me, maybe via email, to allow me to help and to respond in a more adequate way. My best, Timo
