It is an older hotel but very clean and a great location and value. We have stayed there twice and will stay again, not that excited about the breakfasts but the meals in the front bar were outstanding

I stayed at the great southern hotel in Sydney for two nights as I was travelling to see vivid and wanted to be in the city close to everything. This hotel has an amazing location! So close to central station. I could see central from my third storey Window. The staff at reception were lovely. Paddys markets is just around... More

In the area of Paddy's market and china town this hotel is in a great location as it is in walking distance of Sydney Harbour. Lovely rooms, no views though, but suited us as we were just staying overnight as we were going on the Vivid Lights dinner cruise. We went for lunch at the pub belonging to the hotel... More

Perfectly located to screen industry businesses, and walking distance into the heart of the CBD's entertainment district, no frills tight tidy room all that's needed for a quiet sleep and quick shower. Art Deco charm in the foyer.

The Great Southern is definitely NOT for those seeking a luxurious 5 star stay in Sydney. The rooms have all you need for a comfortable stay[though can be a little noisy] with all the usual amenities. The bathroom we stayed in could do with a bit of attention. You have full bar/dining downstairs & breakfast looked inviting. We didn't have... More

Stayed there last night primarily because of the location in regard to where I needed to be. The room was perfectly adequate if dated, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom very good with nice shower. Reception was efficient and quick. While it is not a place to take my wife for a weekend away, it is perfectly fine for... More

We hadn't stayed here since the late 1990s when it had recently been refurbished and was looking quite smart. It's now a bit tired and perhaps just one step up from a back packers style of place but given the location it is very good value. The room was very clean, if not a little basic. As such it is... Looked on trip adviser and found the prices vary from $120 to around $280 a night and they seem to up/down at random [maybe a supply and demand thing]. Luckily we timed it pay towards the lower end for 2 nights. Close to Central station, light rail, buses so anything in town is easily reached. They do breakfasts but we... More

I arrive early and was greeted By Li who was friendly and helpful. I was given my room key 522 and was pleasantly surprise to see the rooms were very clean and tidy and roomy. Bed was comfy, lovely and hot showers, It was lovely to see they have a tea pot in the rooms, very happy for someone who... More

Staying in Chinatown

Neighborhood Profile
Chinatown
Tiger-flanked archways on Dixon Street mark the entrance to the “little Asia” of Sydney. A walk through Chinatown is a feast for the senses where aromas, tastes, sounds and visions of dancing tigers transport you to a different world. Chinatown visitors can expect a melting pot of Asian food at the neighborhood's specialty delis and groceries. From yum cha to handmade noodles, BBQ ducks hanging in the window to Asian sweets and bakeries, there is something for all tastes. Paddy’s Markets is the largest flea market in Sydney where you can find souvenirs, clothing, gifts and fruit and vegetables at unbeatable prices. At night, Chinatown comes alive with entertainment including theater, nightclubs and bars that are open until the early morning.
