The report below was written in the half hour after these guests departed and was sent to the Belizean travel company from whom we received the reservation, then on to an agent in Guatemala and back to their own agent in their home country. From emails received since they departed it seems that this may not have been passed on to them. The following quote from one illustrates the tenor of their communications: "Today is the 29.9.2018 and we would expect having answers and how we get our money back. For the sake of all parties it would be better to agree on acceptable solution soon rather than having bad reputation if such a post, with the incident details, will be published on the net.". "At about 07:00 this morning Mr ......... reported that he and his companions had had US dollars and Quetzales stolen from their room safe. Both couples used the same safe since the other had battery problems. Mr ....... says that he checked the amount of US$50 notes before he put them in the safe. He did not check the Quetzales and US$20s. He locked the safe by swiping his credit card. He has identified the time during which the incident occurred to the approximately 30-45 minutes when he and his colleagues were tubing, guided by one member of our staff, between 15:45 and 16:30 on Tuesday 18 September since that was the only time that the card was not on his person. While they were tubing he hid the card in some spare blankets on one of the wardrobe shelves. When he returned there was no sign of the blanket having been disturbed. They left their keys on the bar. I was in the office at the end of the lobby and two members of staff were preparing dinner in the kitchen with the door propped open and the keys visible in the middle of the bar. Those two female members of staff were together during the time the guests were on the river. There was one other male member of staff on the property at the time. Before the tubing he agreed with his colleague which one should guide the guests and which one skim and brush the pool and sweep the leaves from the dock where the guests would get out from the river. The room was locked when they left for tubing and also when they returned. The safe was locked when they left and also when they returned. Apart from wallets with money and credit cards the safe contained four phones, an IPad a Lenovo tablet and passports. Not all the money was taken. The ........ believe they lost US$350 and Q1,000. The ...... believe they lost US$400 and Q600. Their insurance does not cover loss of cash and no police report can be made since they had to depart for Guatemala. This was not an opportunistic theft since doors and safe were locked. It would have required a thief to know that the safe could be opened with a card as well as a PIN and to have conducted a search of the room to find the card in the blankets. I have not taught staff anything about the use of safes and the master key is held in my office safe. With all the stress of the morning I chose not to charge them for dinner last night although that should not be interpreted as accepting responsibility." The following is an extract from my covering email sent with a second copy of the report above: "I have interviewed my four members of staff more than once and am satisfied that none of them was responsible having neither the knowledge, time nor opportunity to carry it out. Nor from my personal knowledge of them as colleagues over the past twelve years do I think they would even consider doing something like this. They all appreciate how important our reputation is and how damaging negative online posts threaten their own jobs and livelihoods as well as the reputation of the lodge itself. Just as your insurance company will not cover loss of cash, nor can The Lodge at Big Falls accept liability for this loss. It is possible that the money could have been lost at the previous hotel in Caye Caulker or en-route to the Lodge by water taxi and road transfer. While I appreciate how distressing a loss like this can be I do not feel there is sufficient evidence that the loss occurred here and am not able to reimburse you for your losses."

Spent 5 days here. The owner, Rob, was great. Greeted us by name whenever we saw him, made sure all of our needs were met. All of the food we had there was excellent. He hooked us up with Steven as our guide during our visit. He was AMAZING! This was a different type of vacation

What local attractions do you offer in the month June?
There are no special celebrations, festivals or events in the month of June which is normally the beginning of the rainy season. However, all our normal activities are available and you can find details of those tours on our web site.
