I booked this hotel as it looked great online. It was clear I was travelling alone for work and I’d added a message to say I may be arriving late due to meeting schedule. When I got there around 6.30pm and was shown to my room, realised it was in an out building and I was the

Dear Norton-Trucks, Thank you for your feedback on your experience with us. All feedback is helpful to ensure we are able to satisfy the great variety of customers we look after. I completely understand your concerns! Before I took over the pub I was a young, post graduate student of Forensic Psychology and I was often travelling alone on research. As a female, and due to the nature of my studies, I am very aware of the need to feel secure. However, I was extremely surprised to hear that you did not feel comfortable during the short time you viewed our quiet, countryside pub and B&B. As you booked online we were not aware that you were a female staying alone, or on business. We absolutely would have been able to explain any B&B details fully if we had spoken over the phone. We welcome and recommend customers to call us to discuss any personal concerns or questions. January is a quiet month for all pubs, hence we were less busy than in the Summer season. I am pleased that the staff found you two alternative, reputable B&Bs nearby - I'm sorry you thought these would also be unsafe and made your own arrangements. We were unable to offer a full refund as per our standard cancellation policy (detailed online and in your booking confirmation). For clarity to all those viewing this review - please note the B&B is fully heated, although for energy conservation we have the boiler on a timer. All staff explain to customers how to turn up the radiators and we are happy to put the heating on to 'constant' if requested. Also, there are locks on the room doors, and the main entrance (our female barmaid always makes a point to say 'feel free to lock them all if you wish', to ensure a feeling of comfort - unfortunately in this instance it may have been misinterpreted). All the windows have locks (admittedly old fashioned ones in keeping with the traditional building). The pub itself is situated within the South Downs National Park, but our B&B backs onto our private garden. We have security lights, alarms, and neighbours that are very aware of any 'unusual' comings and goings in our village. Our crime rate is extremely low, and I live on site, with full view of the B&B. There are a variety of photos of the rooms and pub on our website and here on TripAdvisor - however, as mentioned above, we welcome customers to call us to discuss any personal concerns or requirements. Best wishes, Thais

We arrived at the pub Saturday afternoon after a very pleasant 10 mile walk around the surrounding countryside. We were a group of 4 friends who had escaped husbands/children for 24 hours and wanted a shower, nice meal, good bottle of wine and a comfortable bed to have a lie-in.

Dear Helen R, Goodness, thank you so much for your lovely, detailed, and comprehensive review. We really appreciate our customers taking the time to write reviews for us; especially, as you mention, those with busy schedules and responsibilities. (I'm sorry for the late reply, I'm currently on holiday with limited signal). I'm absolutely delighted that you and your friends enjoyed the, well needed, break. We're very lucky to have the South Downs National Park so near that we can provide refreshments and accommodation to those taking walking/cycling holidays. We only took over 18 months ago, as such haven't yet redecorated in the B&B. Definitely top of our list though! I'm super pleased you enjoyed your meals. Our kitchen work so hard to prep and serve the best of local produce, so all compliments are happily received. Thanks so much again, and we hope to see you soon! Best wishes, Thais

We visited the Elsted Arms yesterday for a lovely Sunday pub lunch. I can not fault this place at all. The staff were so kind and attentive and all the food is made from scratch so even when I needed to make changes to my dish to avoid any alcohol they were able to do this
