Last week a group of friends and I had the great privilege of spending six days at Fazenda Barranco Alto--an experience that was magical, unforgettable. Indeed, I am sure it will remain a highlight of my traveling adventures for years to come! When we began planning this trip, we were uncertain if we were even going to be able to go, considering all the uncertainty of travel during the age of COVID-19. But from the start, the staff of the fazenda were honest and responsive to our queries. So even before we arrived, I knew they were taking the real concerns of travel during the pandemic seriously. And once we were at the lodge it became all the clearer they were doing their utmost to keep everyone healthy, safe, and happy. Our group had four rooms in the main building, separate from another family that was visiting. All meals and activities were separate from the other group, too. Everyone wore masks; social distancing was maintained on our excursions. I was extremely impressed with the thoughtfulness of their planning. But the real highlights of our time were the abundance of wildlife we saw and the kindness we experienced from all the guides and staff. We kept telling ourselves it can't get better--and each day it did. I know in part that we were exceedingly lucky--we sighted a female jaguar just hours after we arrived and then spotted her cub a couple days later; some of us even saw a puma in daylight!--but even without those chance encounters with the wildlife our time at Fazenda Barranco Alto exceeded all of our expectations. We seeking an experience far from the tourist "crowds", one that would get us up close and personal with the richness of the Pantanal. And Barranco Alto provides that in spades. It also is a working fazenda, so you get a glimpse of the life of the farmers and ranchers who live within this unique ecosystem--and who it is possible for them to co-exist sustainably with the wildlife in the area. Almost from day one I began planning a return to Fazenda Barranco Alto, hopefully to see it during the rainy season. I want to experience this beautiful corner of the earth in all its guises. I highly recommend anyone who wants a genuine taste of the glories of the Pantanal to put Fazenda Barranco Alto on their list!

Barranco Alto truly deserves the outstanding reviews on TripAdvisor. It is a place like no other. Incredible location, incredible wildlife and incredible staff. It is so remote and you feel like you have the whole area to yourselves. My husband and I recently spent 4 nights there and we have agreed that we have never had such an amazing wildlife experience. We were lucky enough to see two giant anteaters, two tapir, a tayra, a jaguar, giant otters, crab eating foxes, crab eating racoons and a huge variety of birds (at least 100 different types of birds). The days start early (5.30am) with breakfast and a morning activity, followed by a rest period and lunch, and then an afternoon activity (3.30pm) which runs until after dark. This provides the best opportunities for seeing wildlife including nocturnal mammals and birds. Activities included jeep safaris (and night drives), boat rides, canoeing, walks and horse riding. We enjoyed all of them, and a sunset boat ride was just beautiful. The staff make this place extra special. Claudia and Fernando were excellent guides who knew exactly where to look for the best chances of spotting wildlife. Stefan was also fantastic. The whole team is immensely friendly and are a wealth of knowledge. We could not believe how much they knew about the flora and fauna. The food is also delicious. I noted how well they catered for all diets - vegetarian, lactose free and gluten free. Nothing was too much trouble. They will go the extra mile to give guests the best experience. We chose to fly in one way, and opted for a land transfer on the way out. This worked well as on the way in we had amazing views over the pantanal, and on the drive out we were able to spot lots of wildlife (including a giant anteater). Thank you very much to Claudia, Fernando and Stefan for making our time in the pantanal so amazing.

Of the 3 properties we visited during our Pantanal journey, this is the one that offers the quintessential Pantanal experience. It's a charming property on a cattle ranch, and it's very, very remote - you rarely, if ever, run across other guests during an outing, especially since there are only six rooms in the entire property. Our room was in a duplex in a separate building just slightly away from the main house, and we're glad we chose this room. It overlooks a beautiful lake, it's quite spacious, and has a screened porch area as well. It also had a functional air conditioning unit that came in handy - it got up to 35C in the middle of the day. The entire property deftly balances functionality, style, comfort and warmth. The common grounds, dining area and library are all stylish while still being earthy - it seamlessly blended into the incredible surrounding environment. Food wise, the ingredients were fresh and everything was nicely presented, but we were not impressed by how sour (unnecessarily so) most of the dishes were (everything fro the salads to stews to even grilled chicken), the lack of variety as well as the repetitive nature of what they had. For instance, most meals consisted of salad, bread and one or two protein dishes, but particularly in the case of the salad, there was very little variation in the vegetables as well as the dressing choice. The dishes were nice and simple (don't try so hard in a safari lodge; most people don't want fine dining after a long day out in a harsh environment), but other lodges we stayed at with similar room counts were able to offer more variety and with flavoring more to our liking. The calling card of Barranco Alto is the staff, environment and wildlife, and this is where the property earns its lofty reputation (and rightfully so.) Stefan Grol (our private guide for the duration of our stay), Claudia and Lydia (the latter is the resident Giant Anteater researcher) are passionate and enthusiastic about their work, are an encyclopedia of knowledge, and are always eager to answer any questions that guests may have. Stefan has an intense love for nature, but goes about his guiding in a calm, relaxed way... perfect for the environment. Speaking of environment, we did not experience a prettier setting than Barranco Alto. This is truly wilderness at its most beautiful and tranquil. It's blissfully quiet, has an incredible variety of amazing landscapes, flora and fauna, and - with a maximum of six groups of guests staying there at any time - you will be hard pressed to run across others during your outings. This is as close as it gets to a high quality Zambia or Botswana wildlife experience in South America. We are hardcore wildlife enthusiasts that prefer hard-hitting fauna-focused outings, but at Barranco Alto, we found our muscles relax and our heart rate drop. It really is that peaceful. Because of that, you'll want to stay at least four nights, if not more, to really soak in the experience while at the same time checking off your animal-spotting goals. We did not see a Jaguar, but we witnessed them in abundance in the other 2 properties that we visited. We did, however, have great sightings of Giant Anteaters (including one with a baby on her back), Tayra, Six and Nine-banded Armadillos, Southern Tamandua (aka Collared Anteater) and an incredible array of charismatic birds. And did I mention the gorgeous rivers, lakes, forests, grasslands and sunsets? Barranco Alto is an awesome place. If you plan on venturing to Southern Pantanal, I would definitely recommend that you pay this place a visit.

Thank you for your positive review about your stay with us. We´re glad that you really appreciated the privacy, the remoteness and the beauty of our property, as well as the wonderful opportunities to see wildlife here. Also, we´re glad that you like the layout of our lodge blend unobtrusively into its natural environment. We are happy that you like the freshness and presentation of our meals. But we are really sorry that you found the meals to be 'sour' and to lack variety. We are always trying to provide varied and flavourful meals for our guests. We appreciate that this can sometimes be a challenge in such a remote environment, being so far from the nearest town, but we try and we will continue to try. Best wishes from the whole Barranco Alto family.

Nicely located farm, by the river Rio Negro. The rooms are spacious with AC and fan, private bathroom, screened porch. All the property is very clean and well maintained. In the middle of the yard beautiful mango tree. The tables, chaires hamocks where you can socialise with other guests enjoying excellent home made caipirinha or fruit juice and listening to the birds. The home made food is delicious. The guides take you on driving tours, boat tours, walking, horse riding, birds watching. The owner and the whole staff are very friendly and they make you feel home.

We spent 3 memorable nights at Fazenda Barranco Alto this August. From the minute we stepped out of the 'plane we were made welcome by Stefan, Lydia and Claudia and all the staff. This is a truly beautiful place - just 6 rooms in amongst the beautiful lakes and forests of the Pantanal. We packed in jeeps rides, river trips, canoeing at sunrise and even a horse ride and saw a stunning array of wildlife. The highlights included a jaguar by the river (we were taken back specially to see her), giant river otters, giant anteaters, macaws - and much much more! Our room was large and comfortable, overlooking the lake. Meals were taken together in the dining room - very sociable - and the food was incessant and delicious. We have visited many parts of the world for wildlife viewing, and Barranco Alto is certainly among the very best places that we have stayed.
