The minute you arrive you step into a beautiful, serene and inviting place! The entire vibe is relaxing and comfortable...the Inn Keepers are amazing! The food and drinks that are served are some of the best I've had. We spent our days visiting nearby towns and walking/wading through pristine rivers and waterfalls. Evenings spent talking with other guests, listening to music and night time star gazing...This place is truly wonderful...I'd go back in a heartbeat!
My girlfriend and I spent two nights at this wonderful pousada situated on the edge of the charming little village, Sao Goncalo do Rio das Pedras. We were welcomed by Peter and Marcia like old friends, who have really cultivated a quite wonderful family atmosphere at this pousada, typified by the chatter and laughter among guests and owners at dinner each night. The food prepared by Peter was absolutely exceptional, and included many delicious local products. We stayed in one of the private chalets, which was very comfortable, spacious and felt as if we had our own little house for the weekend. Even during a Brazilian holiday, everything felt wonderfully peaceful, both in the grounds of the pousada and the city itself. Peter and Marcia also gave us lots of excellent tips on where else to visit and stay in the region. Will definitely be coming again!…
We spent a weekend at this peaceful and beautiful place! São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras is a place along the "Estrada Real"- which is a rough dirt road with gorgeous views of Minas Gerais moutains! This pousada is "tucked in", literally, inside this little village! Beautiful, clean, inviting, comfortable place! We stayed at one of the chalets- red one,the most spacious! Peter and Marcia are a very nice owners and hosts of it! Want to rest, nice views, peace and quiet? Way to go!
Though extremely hard to get to, (rent a 4 wheel drive, definitely), you will be so warmly received you will immediately forget how hard it was to get there. Peter is a gourmet chef and the meals were exceptional every night. Marcinha is a delight, too! You are welcome to cachaca, cool filtered water, and interesting reading materials. There are several very comfortable public rooms where you truly feel at home. Also Peter gave us so much help in the planning of this trip, referring us to friends and solving our biggest problem of where to stay before flying out of Belo Horizonte without going into the city. He even called to see if there was anything else he could do before we left. Who does that? A very special place indeed.
This is just such a beautiful spot. The pousada itself is delightful. There are secluded chalets of varying sizes and styles. We stayed in the main house with the most amazing view and a very comfortable room. The owners who run the pousada are totally dedicated to making everything lovely. There is a delicious dinner served every evening at 20h and you sit together on long tables. The food is really very good. Peter and Marcinha are outstanding hosts and full of good tips on where to visit and always ready for a chat. The surrounding areas are wonderful - Lots of waterfalls and breathtaking scenery.
I loved staying here! Peter and Marcinha are so warm and welcoming (and Peter was incredibly patient over the course of a long series of emails during the planning stages). The chalets are simple and quiet. The food is delicious (favorites included oxtail lasagna, salad with greens from a neighbor's garden, and green papaya preserved in syrup). The scenery is amazing. The town of São Gonçalo is big enough for you to wander a bit but small enough that you don't feel duty-bound to spend all day sightseeing. There is lovely hiking right from the pousada. With a car you can do lots of day trips to neighboring towns/sites, though I was perfectly content to just spend the day in the hammock on the porch of my chalet. This is a very special place. I'm eager to return!
After a couple of hours navigating the 34 kilometers of Royal Way from Diamantina, we arrived to a warm welcome from Peter and Marcia at Pousada do Capao. Situated just outside the pretty country village of São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras (well worth visiting), we had heard about Peter’s gourmet cooking and were looking forward to sampling it. We were certainly not disappointed and together with another guest who was on a mission to walk the whole of the Royal Way, from Diamantina to Paraty, over 1,000 kilometers, we enjoyed one of the best meals of our trip with the delightful company of Peter and Marcia who make everyone feel honoured guests. The restaurant/living room and general meeting place is decorated with local art and furnishings and is a great place to meet other guests and hear some of the fascinating stories Peter has to tell of his time in Brazil since leaving the States some 4 years ago. Set in a 9 acre nature preserve, there are 9 comfortable chalets dotted around the lovely grounds with en suite showers and spacious comfortable bedrooms, mostly doubles. All the chalets have hammocks for lazing away the hot afternoons and the gardens are bursting with flowering shrubs and bushes. Peter and Marcia are a mine of information on the subject of the local area as well as happily sharing their knowledge of flowers, cooking, local customs, herbs, fruit and general chat about day to day happenings in the area. We left sadly after 2 nights promising to return and continued along the Royal Way to our next stop. Yet another excellent recommendation from Alison of Hidden Pousadas Brazil. www.hiddenpousadasbrazil.com…
After a long drive on the very rough Estrada Real, we were charmed by the pousada and found the cabins to be comfortable and quiet, The breakfasts and dinners were amazingly good. The multi-lingual Chef Peter is an excellent cook. Every meal we had on our week long stay was delicious as we discovered the local cuisine of Minas Gerais. The central dining room is a warm and inviting place. Lots of books, games and flavored cachaca ia always available. The hosts, Peter and Marcinha are friendly, knowledgeabel and have become well known in the local area in a short time., One could hang out and relax at the inn or, in our case, we did day trips to Diamentina, Serro, an organic cachaca distillery, a serro cheese making farm and discovered the local charms of Sao Goncalo and the surrounding villages. I especially liked hikes to a wonderful swimming spot in a river, a waterfall and pool inside a cave and a climb to the top of Pico do Raio with a local guide arranged by the pousada.…
Peter and Marcinha have created an amazing pousada - in probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. Their "chalets" allow for privacy and rustic elegance - while the main house provides the gathering spot for meals that are delicious and refined (gourmet quality) but enough in the "comfort food" zone so that the enjoyment of eating remains the primary goal. This is paradise plain and simple - well worth the beautiful ride on paved and dirt roads (half the fun) that will later bring you to hidden waterfalls and swimming holes, beautiful yet manageable hikes into the local mountains, and lovely colonial towns with history and charm. In this era where people need to work a little harder to get out of range of their Blackberry's "siren call" and the 24 hour news channels, this is the spot. I guarantee after a few meals,a glass or two of wine and a good nights sleep, you are going to wonder to yourself, while swinging in one of the many hammocks, what took you so long getting here - and why the [--] you would want to ever leave.…
The New Year brings us the impetus to welcome new experiences and purge our lives of the mundane. For some, that means making travel plans to a place in the world that offers us something beyond our expectations or mere photos on a website. Our visit to Pousada do Capao in the Brazilian Highlands in May of 2008 inspired me to write about this very special destination..a gem which on a map lies closest to Belo Horizonte (a couple of hours by air from Rio). A brief post like this cannot possibly do an adequate job of recreating the experience, so it’s best to leave you to create your own. For those of you who want the hustle and bustle of of cosmopolitan beaches, fabulous shopping and sightseeing, spend a few days in Rio before venturing into the highlands. Now that this beautiful city will be hosting the 2016 Olympics, it will be Hot, Hot, Hot. There is much to see and do; Rio offers an exquisite blend of culture, natural beauty, art and people, all with a Latin yet somehow European element. We have come to refer a wonderful local guide there named Ceci, who will make your Rio stay unforgettable. But the true jewel in the southeastern portion of this enormous country lies in the highlands, away from the coast and into the heart and soul of the state of Minas Gerais. It is here in São Gonçalo Peter Edwards - Princeton graduate and bank systems executive - decided to create a destination for people who want to go to this country and immerse themselves in the local culture as he has. He speaks fluent Portuguese (a big help, needless to say), and is an exceptional chef professionally trained under Madeleine Kamman. He is a genuine and truly engaging host to his guests along with Marcinha Barbosa, who has put her own native Brazilian upbringing and special touches into building this beautiful place with him. Pousada do Capão will allow you to experience things that most people never would. All the locals know Peter (who can miss him in his bright green Crocs?). From Geraldo who brings the fresh bread to the inn every morning on his bike, to the Garimpo who takes guests diamond panning in Diamantina, Peter has become part of the fabric of this little village. And so, this passion has translated into a wonderful getaway for couples, families, ecotourists, and large groups. You might choose a hike, swim in one of the area’s pristine waterfalls, discover the rich colonial culture in towns along the Estrada Real, or take a ride on a mountain bike or on horseback to a neighboring village. Whatever you do, it will be a day to remember. The beautifully rustic main house with his wood burning kitchen stove is home to local gourmet delicacies for breakfast and dinner, an assortment of wonderful regional wines to enjoy, and local art on display. The quaint yet well-appointed chalets that are scattered on this 14 acre property give you the best night’s sleep you’ll ever have. Leave your blow dryer at home, and pack for an adventure. We can't wait to go back!…
