La Rectoria de Sant Miquel de Pineda is a lovingly restored, family run, 12th century rectory set in La Garrotxa Volcanic Natural Park, on the southern edge of the Pyrenees 45 minutes north west from Girona. At La Rectoria we offer uncomplicated hospitality and comfort in the relative privacy, peace and quiet of our woodland setting. Our guest house is situated on the via verde cycle path 15km south of Olot and 85km from the Costa Brava and the town of Sant Feliu de Guixols. Set in a large garden with a swimming pool. There is also a small patio between the house and the chapel of Sant Miquel where you can sit, relax, read and enjoy an aperitif. The house has 7 ensuite (showers only) bedrooms, two lounges, one with a TV and two spacious halls. Free wifi is available. The dining room gives guests a wonderful view down the Vall d'Hostales where breakfast and dinner are served. At breakfast as well as teas, coffee and freshly squeezed orange juice and the Catalan breakfast of 'pa i tomaquet' (toast with tomato), there is a buffet of local cheeses and cured meats, homemade sponge and cereals. All the jams and marmalades are homemade and there is the additional option of our 'Egg Menu'.....scrambled, boiled, poached and more! In the evening we serve a fixed 3 course menu (24€) using local produce where ever possible. All of the dishes are freshly prepared, reflecting a mix of the culinary styles of Catalonia and Scotland, the owner/chef's home, with a number of the desserts being classic puddings and all the ice creams homemade. All of our wines are Catalan. A bar menu is available and we stock a good selection of Scottish whiskies. We can arrange bike hire and for these to be delivered to the house and we are happy to assist our guests with advice on activities and things to visit, see and do in the surrounding area.

I never write reviews of the places we stay but this year is different. We didn’t want to go through the hassle of flying or driving and wanted to relax and recover from confinement and overworking during the pandemic:We were burned out. We picked La Rectoria because it seemed unusual enough to be interesting and the website claimed that the kitchen was superb. The first part is true and the second bit about the kitchen is an understatement. We took the bus to Sant Miquel de Pineda, in the heat of Catalonia , the volcanic region of La Garrotxa and walked a few minutes through the field to La Rectoria. We stayed five days . It’s the priest’s old living quarters and a small chapel, we were delighted already. The 800 year old building has been lovingly restored, using many original elements from long ago and classic local materials, the bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was very pleasant with fluffy towels (wrapped in a bow!) and fragrant organic soap. The place was spotless. We walked everywhere and visited the neighbouring towns, craters, springs in the mountains and wandered around the old thoroughfare where the train used to pass years ago: now reconditioned for walking and cycling. There’s a nice little pool too. We must have done 20 kilometres a day and that made us hungry. I can’t think of any other place I’ve ever been to where the food was this good. To call La Rectoria a bed and breakfast is selling it short: the dinners we're spectacular, gourmet cuisine. I’ve rarely eaten better and I come from a restaurant family and am picky. Whatever we ate: chicken, beef, fish, cheeses and salads was superbly prepared, with a nice presentation: the perfect balance between unpretentious home cooking with five star gourmet cuisine. I was so excited, I stopped checking the blackboard menu to see what Chef Roy was cooking up: I just wanted the surprise. The greatest surprise were the desserts, they were some of the best I can remember having:I remember the lemon merengue pie, sticky toffee pudding and the rhubarb pie: just first rate. La Rectoria is run by a very nice couple, you see Roy is a Scot, (his wife Goretti is Catalana, so right there, you have an interesting mix) and together with their son and a cleaning lady, run La Rectoria. They we're charming, discreet, attentive and funny. Honestly, I was chocked up when we left. We relaxed, unwound and recharged our batteries, we walked and talked and laughed and slept and ate and relaxed. What a jewel.

Roy and Gorita are the perfect hosts. They make you feel like part of the family. They have lovingly restored the old rectory and the rooms are very accommodating. Roy is the chef and our dinner of sea bream was amazing. Highly recommend.

We had a peaceful stay here and enjoyed the amazing hospitality of the hosts Goretti and Roy. They are so nice and helpful, and prepare excellent food also! They did an exceptional job restoring the Rectoria to make it modern but keep the original charm and features. Very convenient location to Olot. The one downside is that the rooms were very plain and the bed was very hard and uncomfortable for me. However, after talking to Goretti it was clear this was done intentionally to fit with the more plain nature of Rectoria so I didn't mind too much. Overall a great stay.

The property was beautifully restored in a simple but quality manner, totally in character with its environment.  The place oozes with charm and informality, totally reflected by its owners who are always available with a smile and make time to talk and offer advice of where to go. Their friendly manner rubs off so all guests feel so comfortable and chat - a home away from home where you can't help but relax. Why would you get in a car to search for an evening meal when a beautifully presented and cooked meal is offered on site?  Breakfast was also simple local foods, with lots of home made goodies.  A wonderful stay with lovely hosts! Evening meal menu on board for following night looked equally tempting.  Could have easily stayed longer!   This is not a place for fussy eaters as there is no choice of menu.  Not a problem for us.  Am sure that prior notice of any allergies would have been considered.  Don't expect a restaurant choice - but you are guaranteed great cooking! Informal and very pleasurable. with exceptional hosts.  Would definitely return.

La Rectoria certainly lived up to its glowing reviews. We wanted a relaxing break, with good food, and Ray and Goretti have created the perfect venue for just that. Roy's welcome on arrival instantly made us feel at home. Roy and Goretti are a great team and excellent hosts, and gave us good tips about places to see and things to do. La Rectoria has been beautifully renovated and converted into a peaceful haven, yet it's easily accessible. Our room was very spacious with a large bathroom and views over the cycleway. Roy's meals were delicious and of a very high standard. We thoroughly enjoyed it all and hope to return.
