Detailed Reviews
I spent 6 nights here from September 25 2020.
The location is superb. It rests on a small peninsula, with the sea on one side and a laguna on the other, and crossed by a mangrove chsbel. There's a large tidal zone with a deep natural pool at the end of a small channel. At low tide you have to walk around 600 mts to get to the sea. At high tide you get it at your door.
The colors of the water and sand and rocks are just stunning. With the sails of the dhows, it makes it photo perfect.
The facility matches the beauty of the place.
The huts are exquisite, with a beautiful decor.
The staff is excellent, very professional and very friendly.
The food (we chose mostly the seafood option) is equally excelent, cooked by two young chefs trained on site by professional chefs brought from somewhere else; their teachers should be proud of their students. You have to ask for smaller portions if you care about your waist line.
You must be ok with pets. There were 6 friendly dogs and a cat on site. They love to interact with the guests.
Besides walks to both sides of the beach, and some swimming and snorkeling at the chanel natural pool (lots of fish, some surprisingly big, even at low tide), there are a few special activities organized by the management or outsourced from the island - sailing cruises, powered sea safaris when the whales are around, boating tours along the mangrove chanels, up to the local village with a walking tour of the village, from where most of the staff is recruited and trained on site.
There are also kayaks, but it's difficult to kayak in the chanel because of the tidal currents. So better to use them at the sea.
There's also a moderate size infinity pool, but I prefer the chanel natural pool.
Finally the managers are also extremely nice.
At the end of our stay we got one of the most beautiful farewells one can think of.
So, if you want a beautiful and historical place to spend some beach days in Moçambique, Coral Lodge is a highly recommended option, perhaps complemented by a few nights at one of the beautiful lodges at the actual Island of Mozambique.

I stayed 4 nights at Coral lodge and it was a spectacular experience! I would definitely come back to this beautiful place, and next time, I would make my stay longer! The staff are very welcoming and hospitable; the food is amazing (they serve very generous portions), you get a breath-taking view of the ocean and the lagoon; and above all, they have many activities (my personal favourite was Canoeing, the staff even taught me to Canoe!).
I went during the whale season, and it was a magnificent and memorable experience. Though I travelled alone, a few of the staff accompanied me on the boat trip to see the whales, so it made me feel comfortable, and safe as well. I highly recommend this place for solo travellers like me, who at times want to disconnect from everything around to connect with nature. I did Canoeing in the lagoon almost every day, it was a peaceful experience; and when you canoe through the mangroves, you could see the lagoon fish from the surface, and you also see birds and monkeys at times. Then on your return trip, you could see the beautiful sunset.
The visit to Cabeceira village was one of the most touching experiences for me. It was nice to know that most of the staff working at the lodge are in fact employed from this little village, thereby supporting the local community there. I even learnt that the bread that is served at the lodge is sourced from a baker in this village. During my village walk I even managed to see where some of the staff lived in this little village and encountered some of them there. If I had stayed longer, I would have definitely gone back again to spend more time with the community in this village.
I also watched the sunset under the famous baobab tree. The team takes you on a little walk to watch the sunset and packs some snacks and a drink. To get there, you need to cross the lagoon from a Canoe, if it is during high tide (and I was all excited for any number of Canoe rides).
The lodge is located minutes away from Ilha da Moçambique, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and you can also ask the lodge to organise a visit there. The lodge has about 10 villas in total, and if you get the beach villas, you could see the dhows sailings on the turquoise waters from your villa. There are 47 staff in total, so you can imagine the level of care and attention every guest gets, and the standard of quality they maintain. I most definitely felt pampered, and everything was planned with much attention to detail.

If you are looking for a true luxury getaway escape along the Mozambican shores , then do not go further than Coral Lodge. I and my colleagues from Crafted Africa did a site inspection while on our Mozambique familiarization tour. We were picked up from Ilha de Mozambique 🇲🇿 by boat and sailed across the ocean to the stunning shores of the ocean where the lodge is located. On arrival, we were greeted by the a charming team of staff who gave us a detailed tour of the whole lodge. The rooms are so clean and roomy with both hot and cold shower. They are built on raised decks with beautiful views across the ocean.
The food is delicious and thanks to the chef for a detailed explanation of the menu. I’m the afternoon we enjoyed activities such as kayaks and paddle boarding along the lagoon which was a wonderful experience. I can’t wait to come back to Coral Lodge with my family hopefully soon. I highly recommend

We stayed for 3 nights in an ocean facing family villa. Was a wonderful room that our children loved and we did too. The beds were comfortable and all we needed was there. Sitting on the front deck watching the wonderful tides and colors was lovely. Beto and his team made sure everything and everyone were happy. They set up a meal on the beach, one by the pool and another under a gorgeous tree with a fire. The food was consistently amazing. The cocktails and wines available were great. The grounds are gorgeous to walk around. We kayaked around the mangrove. The boat transfer to/from Ilha is an experience one will remember forever. Coral Lodge is simply wonderful, and the part of Mozambique it is situated on us breathtaking. We can not recommend it enough, and we can’t wait to go back!

Coral Lodge is a true gem of a place. We flew by private plane to Lumbo, the Coral Lodge arranged our transfer by road and boat to their amazing lodge.
The beach chalets offer awesome views and direct beach access. They are equipped with everything and more than you need and in immaculate condition.
Staff, service and hospitality are consistently great from arrival to departure. We would have loved to stay longer. A return is already penciled in for next year.

I'd love to write a glowing report and only say nice things about Coral Lodge but that is why I was disappointed in the first place. I had read glowing reviews on Trip Advisor and expected far too much. In the end, it was a perfectly lovely place but not one I would ever return to.
Our family traveled to Coral Lodge for four nights in January. Coral Lodge takes a long time to get to. That is not the fault of Coral Lodge, it is the fault of our travel agent who did not disclose this to us. When you factor in the two hour flight from South Africa, with the utter chaos of Nampula Airport, to the 2.5 hour drive, followed by a 30-60 minute boat ride - for us, it didn't warrant the effort. And that isn't fair to Coral Lodge as they want their guests to know this so that the guests aren't frustrated or put out.
Another thing not mentioned by our travel agent was depending on the tide when you arrive, you may be required to wade into shore - up to quite a ways. The water is shallow and calm, but unless you are anticipating this and dressed properly, it can be a bit of an annoyance. Again, its all a matter of educating the guest as to what to expect.
Once we made it to Coral Lodge it was very pleasant and tasteful. The main lodge is spacious and comfortable. It has a nice relaxed feeling to it. There is a library with board games where you can also get Internet access. The pool area is very pretty and has views on to the beach and the lagoon. It was not at all crowded so there were always seats handy. They would also move chairs down to the beach, if you preferred. The beach is lovely and goes on and on. Its quite amazing how far the tide goes out and you can walk for ages. There are lots of pretty shells. The lagoon was a bit murky. I didn't try snorkelling there but my husband said it wasn't very clear.
The villas are nice and spacious. Ours was a two bedroom one. It was one of the last ones on the Lagoon side. It was very quiet. I think I would chose an ocean front one as then you'd get a lovely breeze. The villa had a table & chairs, a small bar fridge with complimentary drinks, a lovely four poster bed with mosquito nets and a seating area. There was a small bedroom with two twin beds for our sons. The bathroom was lovely in design and very aesthetically pleasing. The small bedroom had air conditioning but the rest of the villa didn't. The King bed had a special cooling system that cooled the bed and it was quite pleasant. We used the fan to cool down the rest of the room, but AC would have been nice as it was quite muggy. I think that Coral Lodge was very nicely designed and felt luxurious but not overdone.
The staff were very pleasant and obliging but there was definitely a language barrier. They did try very hard and always had a big smile. The Management team was useless. They were very detached and had very little to do with you. At one point I wanted to buy some aftersun lotion which was behind the bar. I went to the office and asked the manager to assist me. Instead he redirected me back to the bar (30 feet away) to look for a staff member. I then had to search around for 5 minutes trying to find someone to assist me. I have no idea why he wouldn't just help me, he certainly wasn't busy. It wasn't that the Management team were unpleasant but it was like they were socially awkward and avoided you as much as possible. One of the owners from Holland was there and he seemed like a pleasant man. He was the one that stressed to me how he wished the travel agents would divulge that it was a trek to get there.
The food was quite good at Coral Lodge. The chef was very friendly and wanted you to be happy. He also tried to accommodate our son, who is fussy. Unfortunately sometimes it got lost in translation and we'd all end up with the kid friendly version. We had a nice seafood platter one night and I also enjoyed when they did some local dishes. Wine and beverages were included. Apparently they will also make you picnics and take you to small islands to enjoy them. We did not do this but a couple we met there highly recommended it. They also set up a dinner on the beach one night for a group that were celebrating a birthday.
It was very relaxing at Coral Lodge which we enjoyed. We basically lay on the beach or went to the pool. One day I had a foot treatment and my son had a facial. We enjoyed both. They did them in our room so we did not see the spa. We also went scuba diving one day with their Dive Master, Martin. Martin was very affable. The first time we went out the wind picked up and we decreed it was too rough. He was very good natured about it and we cancelled. The next day we set out again. I was a bit apprehensive that it would be worthwhile as the water is very overfished by the locals. It was crystal clear and as we went out in the boat I didn't see a single fish. However I was happily proved incorrect and we saw some lovely coral and lots of brightly coloured fish. The boat staff we all very lovely and always had a smile for you.
As mentioned in earlier posts, things move at a very slow pace at Coral Lodge. A piece of wood broke on the path and three days later it was still unfixed. That was with the owner onsite so I can only imagine the pace when he is not there. But we enjoyed having nothing to do after the hectic pace of having been on safari.
One thing that I would advise you, is if you are travelling home Internationally, do not fly home the same day as you are departing Coral Lodge. It makes for a very long journey. (again the fault of our travel agent, not Coral Lodge) . We were flying back to Canada via London. It was already a 34 hour journey combined with the layovers, however the trip from Coral Lodge back to Johannesburg added another 10 hours to the journey for a total of 44 hours.
Mozambique is a very poor country. Nampula Airport is horrible. The man in front of me in Security actually handed the x-ray machine person a handful of cash. I was relieved he wasn't on my flight! My husband got pulled over for some rocks that we had bought in Cape Town for $10. They tried to convince him to give them a bribe but he told them to keep the rocks. They then handed him back the rocks and went after some poor Asian man who looked more pliant. We were relieved to leave Mozambique. There is talk of a new airport being opened much closer to Coral Lodge due to some mining developments. That would certainly make it a much more attractive venture. In the end, there was nothing wrong with Coral Lodge, we just felt it wasn't worth the effort to get there.

Good day Thank you very much for the feedback on your recent stay at Coral Lodge. It is very important for the agents to advise clients of the travelling times and distances and perhaps that could have changed your entire holiday. Thank you for the feedback as this allows us to monitor our service levels to guests. Kind regards Neil Markovitz

We had a great stay at Coral Lodge in August. A quiet, undiscovered, relaxed place to unwind as well as explore the fascinating old town of Ilha de Moçambique. I would really like to praise the staff for the way they looked after us and our teenage children. The quality of the food, the service, the activities and the facilities were first-class - a tribute to Nelson, the manager. A real highlight was to see hump-back whales during our stay. I would certainly recommend the lodge to any visitor solely to Mozambique or to include in a longer trip to Southern Africa.

Recently we stayed three nights at Coral Lodge and immensely enjoyed it, its location, and its staff. Our villa was lovely and large with a superb view of the ocean (the ocean was turquoise and blue and every color in between). The managers, Sara and Nelson, were extremely helpful and solicitous; many times they inquired if there was anything additional they could do for us (the lodge's owners should be THRILLED to have them in charge of their operation). Our last night the chef prepared a Mozambique style dinner, which was a highlight of our three-week trip; in my opinion more hotels should offer food indicative of the area in which they are located. The drive from Nampula's airport was long but very, very interesting, as we passed through many villages, which afforded a good look at daily life. We highly recommend Coral Lodge!!!
