Fantastic bar and restaurant serving home made pizzas. The views from the wood deck overlooking the redwoods, river and camp ground. Stunning spot to enjoy a relaxing drink or dinner The rooms are simple and clean, but as we expected. There’s a great hike from fern wood called ‘buzzards roost’. Right in the heart of the big sur national park. Unfortunately part of the PCH (route 1) was closed on our visit so had to do a bigger loop back to Monterey to travel south. The hotel had sent this information to us a couple of times prior to our visit. It was without doubt worth the extra drive.

Given the cost of staying in big sur, the Fernwood was reasonable. Location is also good. Small cabin which tilted to one end. We needed to place books under the legs to level the bed. Heater was tempermental and needed to be placed in cool mode to heat and shut off to prevent overheating of room. Staff were chill to say the least, but food was OK and we had a wonderful night of trivia in the bar one night. So if you must stay in big sur area this is OK, but just OK. Consider not staying in big sur.

Perfect location. Many options for types of stay (motel, tent camping, yurts) plus, a wonderful restaurant connected to the hotel in addition to hikes leading from the campsite! They have a small general store where you can get your tiny necessities. The stars at night were impeccable. Again LOCATION LOCATION!

If your idea of "glamping" is being in a tent, a nice tent, but with canvas walls where you could hear the traffic on Hwy 1, the neighbors/staff going into the bathroom, the neighbors/staff unloading their cars in the middle of the night... then this place is for you. It felt like we were in a tent in a trailer park since there are so many full-time residents. On the map, it looked like our Adventure tent was at the end of the road, with privacy, but actually, we were right up against the staff "housing/tents". We hardly slept at all and spent $200 for one night.

Fernwood is a good affordable option in the otherwise obscenely expensive Big Sur area. In a casual search for hotels in the area I chanced upon this hotel accidentally and booked immediately without reading any reviews. The room turned out to be surprisingly clean and well maintained. The people of the property are also pretty nice and helpful. Unfortunately for me, my trip coincided with one of the worst heat waves in CA history and that did mar our overall experience with the property. The motel rooms in this property are only equipped with heaters which are meant for a cooler weather and there is no air conditioning or fans available in the rooms. The staff were kind enough to lend me a small portable fan which covered one of the beds but the people on the other bed still struggled with the hot temps to get sleep. I got to know from the staff that places in the area including homes are rarely equipped with AC or fans since the weather is cooler all year round. Apart from that, rest of the things were generally fine. The restaurant was decent and Big Sur river access is a plus to this place. We had good time at the river. It also has access to some trails behind the place. Overall except for the heat and the lack of amenities to counter the heat, this place is pretty good for a short 1-2 day stay in the Big Sur area. Since I booked in the motel, my experience is primarily based on motel room stay and not the cottages or tents. …

100% I would stay here again. We stayed in the Motel (room B) and loved it. Every single person from check in to the store to the restaurant were kind and friendly. The grounds are beautiful. You can’t beat the location. We loved our dinner and our stay here. Very relaxing and beautiful. And all this coming from someone who needs everything SUPER CLEAN and safe.

Pros: Conveniently located. Access to Pfeiffer state park. Campground in the back Amenities: restaurant, general store, free parking Cons: Can be loud at night (light sleeps might want to bring ear plugs) Noise from next door rooms Limited space and amenities No cell signal and no Wi-Fi in room It’s more like a motel than a hotel.

We stayed for two nights in June in the Forest cabin with 2 adults and 4 teenagers for just under $1000. The cabin was tiny more like a travel trailer made into a cabin. I wouldn't suggest it for 6 adults but 2 adults and kids are doable. Pros Cabin was worn but clean. Bed was comfy. Futon in living room and bunks were fine for kids. Cons The spots are close, you are literally on top of people in tents, overall it is a very tight campground. Restaurant had mediocre food that was terribly over priced as was the store.

We stayed in an adventure tent - it was just as described on the website - fully equipped and weatherproof tent for a comfortable glancing experience in the forest. There are only a few adventure tents and they share a locked bathroom, so we never had any trouble accessing the bathroom and it was always clean. The hiking trails around here are great and varied. And the fernwood bar and grill is perfect for dinner and drinks in the warmth
