Second, the not so positives: The most glaringly disappointing experience was being told upon check-out that we were welcome to enjoy the property for the remainder of the day, when in fact, we were made to feel very in welcome. When I mentioned that we wanted to stay on site to watch the sunset, and needed to leave immediately after, we were met with frowns and very obvious disapproval. I was shocked. If they want us to leave, please don’t extend an invitation.
For the amount of money they charge per night, the welcome glass of wine should not be overlooked as it was with us, the pools should maintain the “no cell phone use” policy (we suffered through a Texan screaming on business calls while trying to relax at the pool), and staff should go above and beyond for the guests. In our experience, we needed to chase down staff for any help, and then we needed to practice a lot of patience.
At the lap pool, there are lukewarm drinks (the fridge barely cools them), and there is no ice. In order to get any food or drink you need to call the restaurant, and it took over 45 minutes to get ice brought down. I had to ask twice, and actually gave up on the first day. They really need an ice machine or the very least, cold drinks available by the pool.
In addition, for the price of the stay, one should not be in a room with someone on top of them, where footsteps and loud voices can be heard to disturb the romantic setting of the view.
Overall, the view can’t be beat, but the rooms are grossly overpriced, and the service is not matching the price. Dining at the restaurant, however, is highly recommended.

On November 13th and 14th, my wife and I stayed at the Post Ranch Inn as part of an anniversary trip. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of the expectations one would have for a hotel of this category and price.
Upon arrival, we found that the assigned room did not have an ocean view, something we had specifically requested. When we asked for a change, the front desk staff offered us another room with an ocean view for an additional $750. Reluctantly, and given the circumstances, we agreed. However, the new room, while it did have an ocean view, was surprisingly basic considering the price we were paying.
The next night, things took a turn for the worse. Shortly after midnight, a power outage caused the thermostat to turn on and off repeatedly, producing a disruptive noise that kept us awake all night. When I tried to call the front desk for assistance, I discovered the phone wasn’t working because the power outage had also affected it. To make matters worse, the power cut also disrupted the water supply, rendering the sink, shower, and toilet unusable. This created an extremely uncomfortable situation, as I had to use the bathroom during the night without being able to flush, which left the room and bathroom with an unpleasant odor.
Unable to sleep or use our room, we decided to leave and head to the main restaurant. To our dismay, we were told there would be no breakfast service, only coffee and bread. Furthermore, other hotel facilities, such as the spa and gym, were also out of service due to the power outage.
Frustrated, we opted to check out early. This process was chaotic, as the lack of power made it even more complicated.
We understand that power outages and other incidents may be beyond the hotel’s control. However, for a hotel charging $2,000 per night, we expected them to have backup generators or contingency plans to handle such situations.
In summary, we couldn’t sleep, we couldn’t use the hotel’s facilities, we couldn’t have breakfast, and we ended up in a room we didn’t initially want. When we requested compensation through our travel agent, the hotel’s response was simply that these were “uncontrollable circumstances.”
For all these reasons, I do not recommend staying at the Post Ranch Inn. There are much better options in the area with better service and more reasonable prices, such as the hotel located just across the street.
In my opinion, the services and facilities at the Post Ranch Inn do not justify their exorbitant prices.

The 160 acre property has hikes and overlooks the Big Sur coast, which is a spectacular view. There is an edible vegetable garden and yoga every morning in the yurt. Cars are not allowed on the property after guests drive up to reception. So this makes the place feel very much like a private luxury camp.
For our only evening meal, we ordered room service, and the food was delicious. We took breakfast at the restaurant, and it was also delicious.
One of the highlights of our room was the in-room wood burning fireplace. It really made the whole experience really cozy.
The rooms are very expensive, but for a night or two to get away from it all, it is a unique experience that was worth the price.
Whether it be members of the reception/front desk, guest services, concierge, dining, housekeeping, maintenance, gallery/mercantile, the general manager, they all consistently conveyed a genuine desire to ensure guests a most enjoyable stay and offered their services anytime.
The welcome atmosphere, prompt service and attention to detail is embodied by all the Post Ranch Inn team. Work performance is conducted unobtrusively and in perfect timing while guests are immersing in activities and the beautiful surroundings.
Upon returning to city life, a reflection of my incredible stay at Post Ranch Inn can only be described as “magical.” The service, accommodations, amenities, in the majestic location work harmoniously like a masterfully conducted orchestra.
The general manager has done a remarkable job.
Thank you for the magical experience. The time passed so quickly but the memories linger. A return to the Post Ranch Inn is inevitable.
We've been very fortunate to stay in many places, for example hotels in Polynesia and safari lodges in Africa where the guest experience is so overwhelming, we cry when we leave.
So, for us, just don't feel it deserves so many gushing reviews when so many hotels around the world do things even better. But still 5* and would highly recommend a coastal view stay to anyone.

I've given four stars (instead of five) for two reasons. First, they allow smoking outside. Our neighbors lit up marijuana joint after joint for two days and we had to hide inside instead of enjoying worm afternoon breezes on our balcony. The website says that rooms are nonsmoking but that doesn't mean much if the smoke is blowing in from the balcony below.
And second, the price. $100 an hour, base. Dinner is extra and with a glass of wine is $400 for two people. There is one (fabulous) choice: the tasting menu, which as wonderful as it is, is too much food. Granted, no one (including us) that stays here is on a budget; and also granted, the place was full to capacity midweek in October, but it's still a bit breathtaking.
