The Post Ranch Inn has done it again! My husband took me to this beatific sea cliff haven for the second year in a row for my birthday and like fine wine, this elevated experience gets better by the year. My husband arranged a massage for me with Brandon before checking in: he took the stress right out of my body with a deep tissue yet tender rub that left me more present, relaxed, and open to enjoy my stay fully. Monika Jalovec, spa director extraordinaire, has created a magical spa experience from beginning to end. I showered off my excess oils, put on my bathing suit and wandered up the road to the eternity hot tub facing the Pacific with my Five Mountains Jade tea in a compostable togo mug. Exquisite fog hung off the coast and brought a light chill to the air, so I had the tub to myself. I stared off into eternity, mesmerized by the deep blue for over an hour. Megan and Crystal, meanwhile, checked my husband in with true aloha, making us feel like part of the family before Andrew brought our luggage and him up to the ridge with great warmth and cheer to the magnificent and newly renovated Overstrom house. Alfhild Overstrom was a quintessential Big Sur woman with love of the land and a brave frontier heart, reflected in the subtly horseshoe-shaped interior of the sweet house with grass on the roof and the feeling of being tucked inside the cliff with the Spanish lavender and Cistacea flowers waving in the breeze. Nature pulled us in; we felt a deep kinship to the surrounding natural world. Alternating raised and flush (what looked like refined redwood) on the ceiling inside with gorgeous, grained wood on the walls and abstract natural lighting through perfectly placed windows helped our nervous systems relax even further. The bathroom was spacious and luxurious with gorgeous stone floor, cleverly raised stone in concrete shower floor and every amenity you could want. The Overstrom was stocked to the gills with wonderful local cheese, fruit, nuts, and a multitude of cold and hot drinks that we felt lucky to experience. I was treated to fantastic half bottles of reserve champagne, red and white local wines to celebrate, and a note from the general manager Tim Lee, personally wishing us well. Did I mention the private hot tub and lounge chairs on the back deck overlooking the romantic foggy sea? We felt like we found heaven. Sierra Mar for dinner is always a treat and did not disappoint, “a farm driven restaurant that celebrates sustainability through the coastal bounty of Big Sur and our neighboring communities.” Executive Chef Hoon Kang and Culinary Director Reylon Agustin put together an exquisite tasting menu of Hamachi Crudo, Asparagus Salad, Miso Soup, Hand-Shaped Sierra Mar bread, Roasted Cauliflower, Seared Halibut, Smoked Baby Carrots, Marinated/Seared Lion’s Mane Mushroom (or 72 Hour Sous Vide Short Rib), ending with a Sable Breton that was out of this world. Our attentive, knowledgeable, and perfect server Kayla matched a Savigny-Les Beaune glass of 1er Cru Les Narbantons that rolled around my mouth, surprised and complimented every bite. Night manager Jaime was sweet, professional and made sure our dining experience was top notch. After a magical night of connection and a deep sleep, the hostess Cecilia at the front podium warmly remembered our faces and greeted us like friends. Breakfast brought equal pleasure with the California Omelet and the Veggie Burrito. Our server Tony remembered us as well and Carmen A was ever ready with fresh coffee and a beautiful smile, clearing our plates immediately. Brenden, the day manager chatted with us, delightful and informative about the Post Ranch. Sad to go and satiated to the fullest, we checked out with DJ and Darius, who inquired about our stay with genuine care and concern. We were so relaxed that we napped upon arrival at home, an unheard-of luxury in our busy lives, so grateful for our stay at the Post. We both felt recharged/rested, vibrating happiness and joy for whatever our next week would bring. Thank you to all the staff who gave us the perfect experience and see you next year! …
