As with most places in Big Sur Deetjens doesn't offer much from the road. It is most definitely worth a stop. The restaurant was charming and authentic and the food was good. Definitely a great cross between locals and tourists. Take a walk around the grounds and see the babbling brook.

I have stayed here for at least two nights each of the four times I have been in Big Sur. Nothing has changed probably since 1930. Yes, the walls are thin repaired with wine corks, bathrooms small and dark, you can hear your neighbor's thoughts. But Deetjens is part of the Big Sur experience, rather than a roadside inn, it... My all time favorite historic inn ever! Love this property! If my husband asked if I wanted to stay at Deetjen's, Post Ranch, or Ventana in Big Sur I would always say Deetjen's! Our Fireplace room was so charming, and loved the sun patio for Happy Hour off our room. No cell service, no TV's, no computers, no wifi! Love... More

Room was fine and clean. Walls were paper thin. Someone on the other side of the wall was snoring non stop morning, noon and night. Deetjens should not be a place for lodging. It is old. Should be shops and restaurant. For the prices they charge it is bad. No amenities except your room. Can't they atleast throw in a... More

Beautiful setting. The food in the restaurant was very good, until I tried the accompanying onion relish. Be forewarned, this little side crock of stuff is AWFULly hot! The wait person did get me some milk, though she seemed unconcerned. It ruined the meal. Then I had the worst nights sleep I can remember. I was thinking my age was... More

Must do when you drive through Bigg sure. Romantic looking cabin. The writer henry miller just to come here. Always inspiring to visit a revolutionary hide out. The food is good but the ambiance makes it better. If you go there pay good attention at the interior. Very classic. Feels like the deetjens's can walk true door and tell you... More

Stayed for 2 nights in the treehouse room "Chateau Fiasco". Adjectives I would use to describe are: magical, unique, beautiful, comfortable, rustic, quirky, fabulous, relaxing and romantic! This place is not for those who need to be plugged in 24/7. No wifi, phone reception, or TV! Perfect for a getaway from it all experience. Cannot wait to go back. Definitely feel... More

First of all let me mention we did "not" stay here, we just ate here. This establishment is in the most beautiful setting we were not able to pass it up. I could have stayed on the grounds here walking around and just enjoying the serenity of it all day. The restaurant had so much character and charm you feel... More

I've been going to Deetjen's a couple times a year for over 30 years. It is still a lovely step back in time, when life was slower, and you could take time to enjoy the redwood forest, the charming rooms, and the friendly staff. Yes, it's rustic, but if that's what you are looking for, this is the definition! The... More

We had a reservation for 5 and were given a huge wooden table in a wonderfully decorated room. As I hesitated between 2 wines, the waiter came back with a sample of each in elegant glasses. The food was simply delicious with large servings. Vegetarian pasta is to die for, roasted half chicken perfect. I couldn't praise or recommend this... More
