Nestled amid natural splendor, Big Sur Lodge is often celebrated for its rustic allure and spacious accommodations, though some guests suggest the decor could do with updating. While cleanliness generally meets traveler expectations, a few have pointed out areas for improvement. Service experiences vary, ranging from commendable to less efficient, particularly regarding maintenance.
The scenic location near hiking trails is a highlight, yet the lack of modern amenities like Wi-Fi is noted. As for value, opinions are mixed; some find the pricing reasonable, while others question the cost given the amenities offered.

Detailed Reviews
We visit Big Sur every year. We got engaged in Big Sur, got married in Big Sur, and now we travel back each year to enjoy the beautiful scenery and peaceful scenery. We have stayed at 4 different resorts in Big Sur now, but this was our first time staying at Big Sur Lodge. We enjoyed the room and loved the convenient location for hikes (since we only had to walk down a path to get to our favorite trails in Pfeiffer State Park), but what really made this an outstanding stay was the customer service. While making our reservation, throughout our stay, and after our visit, the customer service at Big Sur Lodge truly shined. They helped us find a cabin that perfectly suited our needs with our toddler and made sure a mini fridge was available for us. During our stay, we received an email or text message checking in to see if we had any concerns. And lastly, after our stay, we received a follow up email inquiring about our stay. I thought it was a really nice touch--especially since it didn't seem like something we had to respond to (and thus, was not overbearing) but instead was a friendly reminder that they were there to help make our stay better.
This was our first time traveling during the COVID-19 pandemic. As a scientist and as the mother of an 18 month old, I was very nervous about how busy it would be in Big Sur and how much exposure we would have to other people. I even thought about canceling the trip and staying home. Now, I am so glad we went. We stayed at Big Sur Lodge for Thanksgiving weekend and Big Sur, in general, seemed busier than it was in past years at Thanksgiving. Despite that, it was so easy to keep our distance from other people. Big Sur Lodge had excellent protocols in place to ensure our safety. I felt safe during our entire stay.
Throughout the Lodge, guests were spaced 6 feet apart, with clear markers on the floor. During check in and when purchasing anything (including food) at Big Sur Lodge, each guest used a clean, unused pen to avoid unnecessary exposure. Masks were required at Big Sur Lodge and everyone adhered to that rule while inside the main Lodge and most people kept their masks on outside as well.
My husband and I were both so enamored with this stay that we were already planning our next trip when we left. We will definitely be returning soon and, even though we like to try new lodging each year, we will definitely be staying at Big Sur Lodge again.

We needed a break from the usual but wanted to be safe during the pandemic. Checking in was very easy, lobby commodities have signs posted to avoid sitting by the chimney but I was happy that the staff didn't hassle us while waiting for our take-out food from the café, coming into the cabin was great and the convenience of the BSL location is incomparable. Smack in the middle of Big Sur! 30 Mins away from Carmel and Monterey. Five minutes from the closest Chevron gas station. I do wish the BSL store would have had a little more produce but the grocery store at Chevron fit the bill.
BONUS POINTS: Accommodation to BSL includes entrance fees to the three main state parks in the area.

Perfect location in the heart of Big Sur. Free park passes included with stay. Trails in state park right off the lodge parking lot so super convenient. Restaurant food good. All lodging and food in Big Sur is more expensive than what you would pay outside of Big Sur so the whole area can basically charge whatever they want and people will pay. Rooms are nothing fancy, but it's nice that the lodges have two separate bedrooms for privacy for families and the sink is separate from the shower area. Our lodge could sleep 6 with the sofa bed so there's plenty of room for larger family.

Four of us stayed at the two queen bed cabins at big Sur Lodge.
Front desk lady was very friendly and helpful.
Because of the pandemic we are facing, I was wiping the cabin a bit and it was extremely dusty. I understand that its a cabin, but it felt like it had not been rented or cleaned in a year.
If thats the case, once the cabin is booked, housekeeping should be told to check the cabin.
The place was like something out of a comedy. The towel rack fell out of the wall when i put a wash cloth on it. The rod and shower curtain fell down when I moved it to go into the shower. The small refrigerator highest setting was warm and wifi for the day is $13.00 per device. Yes, per device.
The man at the only place in the lodge the sells coffee seemed exasperated because I asked what where my choices of milk for the coffee. Get over it! its 2020.
When I encounter people like this, I always wonder if I did something wrong, but later my sister comments to me " what is wrong with that man at the coffee bar, he is so snappy".
I did love my hikes during my stay, but I will definitely would not return the the Lodge.

Big Sur Lodge is Great! My family stayed for 4 nights during the week in July and it was not nearly as crowded as we expected. Ideally, we would have camped in the park, however, there were no sites available for our dates. We ended up booking a 1 bedroom cottage with a kitchen two months prior to our stay. The cottage was clean and modern with exception of the bathroom floor needing to be replaced. There are no TVs, or radios, so be prepared to bring reading material for the downtime. Your cell phone will only work near the pool, not in your room. The weather was perfect all week. The cottage got a bit warm even with the windows and the front door open. They had nice floor fan available which helped a little but we thought ceiling fans in the bedroom and living room would have been much more useful. The kitchen was stocked with adequate items, but be prepared to constantly be washing dishes by hand because there are only 4 of each when it comes to plates, bowls, and silverware. We did not mind because my wife cannot stand dirty dishes in the sink anyway. It is good to note you have to stay at least 5 days to get housekeeping service. It would have been nice to have some cleaning supplies like a broom and dustpan and bathroom cleaning items because a family of 4 sharing a one bedroom cottage while going hiking and to the beach means lots of areas need to be cleaned. We improvised, but we will bring our own cleaning supplies next time. We asked for new towels once during our stay when we saw the housekeeping staff next door and they took our dirty towels and brought us new ones. Overall, we really enjoyed our stay and would love to return. The park is absolutely gorgeous and Big Sur Lodge did not disappoint.

It's nice but not worth the rate. Cabins are attached so you can hear what's going on next door. No microwave in our room not sure if that true for all rooms. With kids a microwave is needed to reheat leftovers or milk at night. I would expect more for the price. The restaurant was great. The food was tasty and the staff was kind. Spent about $50 every meal, for two adults and 2 children. Be aware of the turkeys, two guest had a turkey on top of their car and you can imagine the mess. Not sure why stay per night is so high, the beauty can be experienced without staying in lodge and rooms can be better for that quote. My room was not serviced even after putting the service sign.

Stayed in the kitchen suite. Rooms/Beds are very comfortable. Loved the instant-on fireplace. Although they provided pots and pans we brought our own which makes it easier to cook. They only provide table settings for 4, so you need to wash if you need more, or bring your own extras. Full size fridge & freezer. Highly recommended!

The staff are wonderful here, helpful and engaging. The lodge we had was comfortable, and the views and park is stunning.
The restaurant was reasonably priced given the fact that it's isolated and the US appears to be massively overpriced for what you get. The whole of the US gets a 1 Star rating for value for money!!!
Your lodge includes entrance into the state parks so use it to go hiking and explore this beautiful countryside.

Hello Andrew, Thank you for your comments concerning your recent stay here at the Big Sur Lodge. We strive to offer a high level of hospitality here at the lodge and we hope your stay was a cherished and memorable one. You will be happy to know we have a new General Manager who is working hard to move us forward this year with fresh and creative ideas to enhance the beauty of the lodge. Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is truly a lovely place to experience the majestic splendor of the redwoods, enjoy the tranquility of the Big Sur River, and escape to the rugged beauty of the coastline. We look forward to hosting you in the future should you return to the Big Sur area. Warm Regards, Jennifer

The location is EPIC because you have access to the park. However, the cottages should be described as rustic cabins, with out the charm. The pictures on the website do not accurately depict the inside of the cabin. Also, our cabin had a view of the parking lot, not trees or mountains as described. I Walked the property and it looked as if very few cabins had views. It felt like a $59 cheap hotel in an awesome location. I have stayed at several other properties in Big Sur (which were described as rustic cabins) and this was my least favorite, but the most expensive. With some small improvements, such as decent bedding and towels this property could better match the description on the website. If you go, lower your expectations and know you are paying for the location, period.

You can't beat the beauty of the Big Sur redwoods. The great hikes in the Pfeiffer Big Sur park were amazing. Our stay at the lodge, however, was just ok. For the price, I expected more. If felt like a Motel 6 dropped in the middle of a beautiful forest. The restaurant was closed, due to Covid-19, I guess, although there were others up the road that were open. We were told we could order hot sandwiches to go from the coffee counter until 5pm, but were turned away at 4:15. The swimming pool was pleasant, however there are no tables or umbrellas next to the pool, so the whole area is in direct sunlight. Our room had an actual wood burning fireplace with a complimentary bundle of wood, which was nice. There was not an air conditioner in the room, but they did supply a large floor fan. Overall, it was not bad, but if we return to the area, we will find another place to stay.

There are grills in the State Park and also in the campground. None in the Lodge itself.
Yes. There is a sink and a mini fridge in the cottage you have reserved.
Hi! If you have AT&T or Verizon, you will get a few bars up near the pool and near some of the cabins. There is free Wifi in the lobby..there is no great wifi in all of Big Sur..but enough to check email, etc.
We stayed at the property in April 2019. I was surprised to have a little bit of service in my cabin. And there is one spot on the property where they said there is service... at the small convention center (more like a couple of meeting rooms).
Hello! There is self service laundry service here, in the state park.
