This was our second stay, both for weddings. We were Diamond Club guests. Aside from the inevitable highlights of being with family for a special celebration, the unexpected treat was the superb service provided by our Butler team, Diego, Dereck and Joel. Our every desire and more were met every day and night. In general the hotel staff was an A+, with a special thanks to Zarco Edger, Hunter Steakhouse waiter extrodinair. Thank you all.
We came back for a second visit to the Royalton for 10 nights from 10/27 to 11/06. The last time we came, we brought our son and stayed in a family room. This time it was adults only and we upgraded to a 1 Bedroom Suite in the Diamond Club. Here's my impression of our latest trip. COVID Test for Canadians We had questions, like others, on if/how can Canadians get the PCR test we require up to 72 hours from coming home. Rest assured the hotel is aware of this. You can book your PCR test at the hotel (in the main lobby at a desk closer to the shops and the coffee shop). The cost for the test is $69 USD. You pay for it, in cash, when you get your test. Make sure when you book your test, you tell them you're from Canada (if you are!) and you need the PCR test. From what we can tell, they had separate 'clinics' where they did the Antigen test (for Americans) and the PCR test for Canadians (2nd floor of the Diamond Club lounge). We got our test at 9 AM 2 days before our flight and got the results at 9:23 AM the next morning. You'll get the results in an email and the hotel will print if for you. The only issue we had was that 'clinic' was run by one person who was administering the tests and taking the info on her cell phone. It seemed a little disorganized as she arrived at exactly 9 AM and there were already a room full of people. She also didn't speak English and had to use Google Translate to talk to folks. Room We upgraded on this trip to a 1-Bedroom Suite and it was fantastic. We had a full room with a king bed and massive bathroom (double sinks, big tub, double-head shower) and a separate room with a table, family room, another bathroom and a stocked bar (4 bottles of liquor: Jose Cuervo Tequila, Captain Morgan Spiced Rum, Johnny Walker Red and Svedska Vodka, 3 bottles of wine and XX, Coors Light and Sol beer in the fridge). We also had juice, water, chocolate milk and soft drinks (Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Fanta Orange). The bar wasn’t updated each day. It believe it was because we had frequently put up our ‘Do not Disturb’ sign. We did frequently see them in the halls, so I do think they stock the fridges fairly often. We found the bed really comfortable and slept really well while we were there. Although we really like the spacious bathroom, my wife didn't like the tub as it wasn't secure and moved on her while she was in it. The TV had plenty of channels (HBO, American Networks and specialty channels and some international channels, including CBC and City TV from Canada). Our room was in building 6 and our view was of the Diamond Club pool and we could see the ocean as well (although we weren't facing it). Our room did have some signs of wear (broken mural, door in the bar that wouldn't shut properly, etc.). However, we've noticed this at most all-inclusive hotels we've been too. They should fix these minor issues though. Still, we loved the room. Diamond Club Last time we didn't do Diamond Club and we didn't like the lines at the restaurants. So this time we upgraded. We were happy with the upgrade. The main reasons we thought it was worth it are: 1) Getting diner reservations - your butler will take care of this for you and you won't have to wait at busy restaurants for a table. 2) Beach Area - the lady that works the beach area really works hard. She frequently came to our loungers to take drink orders and she returned with them pretty promptly. There is also a lot of loungers there and palm trees for shade if you want it. 3) Access to the Tex-Mex Restaurant (Armadillo) - at the moment, this restaurant is only open for lunch, so it can only be accessed by Diamond Club members. 4) Butler Service - Javier, our butler, was great. There are limits on what they can do (I never did get Heineken beer put into our fridge), but he was very helpful. He even came up to explain the Day of the Dead to us as we were there for that. Make sure you get WhatsApp on your phone as this is how you’ll keep in touch with your butler. My wife also liked the upgraded slippers and housecoat. Having liquor in the room as well was nice. I wasn't super impressed by the Diamond Club lounge. There were only a few different bottles of liquor and a small seating area. A few snacks there, but nothing that brought me there instead of the coffee shop for a treat. Facilities Lots of pools at this place. We went to most of them over our 10 days, but spent the most time at the Diamond Club pool. The waiters worked really hard there and were frequently dropping by to see if we needed anything. Beach When we first got there, the seaweed (sargasso) was pretty bad. The hotel had cleared it off the beach, but there was a lot in the water. As the week progressed, the seaweed died down. A few days we had very calm waters and there was no seaweed at all, you could see your feed when you were up to your shoulders in the water! Note: Cancun Riviera doesn't have the clear blue water and the white sand beach like you see at other areas in the Caribbean. Even on our best day, the water is a semi to mostly transparent light green colour. The sand there is light brown, but is very soft on the beach and in the water. Since the water is fairly open, it can be really choppy some days. We spent a lot of time at the beach as there were lots of loungers in the Diamond Club area, many of which were shaded by palm trees. It was also a little cooler there (closer to 27C with the breeze) and the service was fantastic. I wish I recalled the lady's name that circulated the beach area. She really busted her butt each day bringing folks drinks. She worked so hard, we made sure to give her an extra big tip on the day we left. She really helped in making our stay relaxing and memorable. Food We didn't have a bad meal on our whole trip. Being there for 10 days gave us a chance to go to all the restaurants (we missed a few the first time). Not all of the restaurants are open every day, so check your TV as it does give you a schedule. Not sure if our favorite was Hunters or the Teppanyaki grill, we did both twice. We also did the Tex-Mex twice for lunch as we liked that one a lot as well. The only one that was a bit disappointing was the Italian restaurant. It was our son's favorite on our last trip and we liked it a lot as well. However on this trip, I don't think they used the stone fire stove for the pizzas as they were really doughy. They were really busy as well. We only did the buffet at breakfast. It was great. There were a lot of food choices (including lots of Mexican dishes, at breakfast!!). We normally ate so much at breakfast that we only had light lunches from the snack bar or the food truck in the main area (chicken chimis are great!). We did room service once for breakfast and it was great. Breakfast was brought up promptly at 9 AM as we had asked. We also did the Sports bar once for beer and wings. The wings were good and the other food we tried we liked as well. Entertainment There was foam parties at one of the pools every 2nd day I think. There were afternoon shows somedays as well. We went to the 'all in white' party just before Halloween and some costumed characters showed up. It was pretty cool to look out on the dancefloor to see a 12'' Jack Skellington doing the YMCA in the middle of all the dancers. They had a show and activities for Halloween as well. Some folks and kids were dressed up. I believe they did trick or treating as well. They also had a show for the Day of the Dead. They set up alters as well with some info to explain what Day of the Dead means to Mexicans. It was really nice. Most other nights most of the entertainment was music and dancing. They did have a magic night though that was cool. Overall We had a great trip. Just what we needed to get away from work and home and forget about all that for a while. I am giving this resort another 5 star rating as we found the value for what you get at this resort well surpasses what you pay to go here. We will definitely be back (and will most likely pay to be in the Diamond Club again). Coming Home Traveling during the pandemic certainly had its challenges. There were a lot more requirements to come home then there was going to Mexico. We noticed on the way down, no one check to see if we filled out the Mexican health questionnaire (which was basically the only Mexican COVID requirement). They do check this on the way back. I recommend to fill out the form at the hotel on the day you leave. We couldn't figure out the proper Wi-Fi at the Cancun airport so we were a little leery to us it there. Expect long delays checking into your flight! It took us almost an hour to check in at the Air Canada desk as they check your ArriveCan App (I'm pretty sure this was the only place that did), your PCR test results, vaccination status, etc. I'm pretty sure that none of this was checked when we arrived back into Canada. We just went through customs in Canada. Also, there were people at the elevators to the departure gates trying to get folks to scan a QR Code to pay some kind of new tax. We didn’t know if this was a scam or not as no one including our travel agent had previously mentioned this to us. We didn’t pay it and we got home fine. I have since looked it up and perhaps it may be legit, but just not enforced. Not sure. We’ll ask our travel agent the next time we go down.…
Shout out to Damaris and her coworkers at the Diamond Club pool!!!!!!!!! Outstanding service!!!!!!!They work hard all day to make sure guests are looked after. Damaris always provides service with a smile!!!!!!!!!!!Mucho gracias!!!!!
Was a very nice experience. I was worried before i went as i seen a good few bad reviews. Cant understand why to be honest. The staff were all really amazing apart from two miserable waiters. The restraunts on site are nice, the steak house was probably the best. The resort is nice and clean. My brother got bit a lot and i didnt so take insect spray. My headphones went missing from my room which was joke. i know about 6 people who cut their feet in the main pool (including me) this wasnt good as i had to stay off the sand for a few days. The seaweed is an issue, puts you off going in the sea. I travelled 25 mins to Cancun city and there wasnt much sea weed, nice blue sea which i went in. The drinks do seem a little watered down so i ordered an extra shot of tequila to put in my cocktail. Very nice vibe here.…
Francisco was an excellent server, very professional, friendly and attentive! Elmer was excellent too, we couldn’t ask for more. Great night out at the Grazie restauran at the Royalton hotel! We would love to come back again.
We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Royalton. A month before our holiday, after reading the horrendous reviews we looked at changing our hotel several times! We are so glad we didn’t, we had an amazing holiday! Yes the hotel isn’t perfect, but for what we paid and baring in mind they have been closed for a few years due to Covid it was brilliant and on par with other 5* hotels we’ve been to in Mexico, Jamaica and Dominican. Food - food was brilliant all round. The buffet is huge and you’d find it hard not to find something to eat. We went to the different restaurants every night and walked straight in most nights around 7/730. The most we ever had to wait was 20 minutes. We loved Hunters, Taj, Caribbean and Agave (they make fresh guac and smoked margs at your table. Shout out to Mikhail for the best margaritas) Staff & service - the staff are a credit to this hotel. They cannot do enough for you. The service was brilliant all round. Tipping goes a long way. Also look out for fresh coconuts by the beach, the gardener is 80 years old and he prepares them for you for $1 Trips - highly recommend the Cirque Du Soleil Joya show, we did dinner and champagne and it was brilliant! We got a taxi from the hotel for $100 and he met us outside when it finished. We also did Holbox which was really beautiful, so much less tourist heavy than Tulum. Can’t wait to go back to stay it was paradise. Drinks - for the best drinks head to the lobby bar. They give you premium spirits and they are not watered down. We enjoyed sitting upstairs looking down on the entertainment with the sea breeze in the evenings with drinks from the lobby bar. Sun - the sun is the strongest we’ve ever experienced here with the UV index being 11 (extreme) every day. Bring SPF 50! You will need more than you think. We wore 50 for the whole trip and had to buy some from the shop setting us back $55 🤣 Massage - you have to get a massage on the beach. It is so much cheaper than the hotel spa and in a gorgeous setting with the sea in the background. The ladies are brilliant. I paid $90 for a Swedish. It is by the Mexican flag on the beach. Beach - the beach is lovely until you get to the sea where there is lots of seaweed. We didn’t go in the sea once. Do not come here for the beach. We wasn’t Diamond club or hideaway and didn’t feel any different to the people who were. Wouldn’t say DC is worth the money, as long as you tip well you will have a great holiday!!…
We joined the water aerobics class today and it was amazing with Gloria and Astrid!!we all loved it!! I will defo be doing it again tomorrow, all staff around the pool are amazing, defo recommend, love love love!!
The Royalton Riviera Cancun is not a new hotel as it may appear. There has been a name change and use to be the Dreams hotel. Now it's a An Autograph Collection by Marriott. In my opinion this is a 4 Star hotel. From the moment you walk-in the staff is friendly. I noticed the furniture / patio furniture was dirty and some were ripped. The drinks are not the typical drinks you get back in the USA.. They all started tasting the same unless we choose a Pina Colada which was good. However, Please plan to bring your own straws as the hotel dose carry any. You can purchase one from the gift shop at a cost of $5.00. We selected the Dimond Club Swim-Out room. I will admit this room has a beautiful view of the ocean. You can watch the sunset from your balcony. Room 6103.. Room- They offer a nice steamer but I requested an iron. The month of April the swim-up may be a little cold and not enjoyable. No heated pool but the view is everything. Diamond Club.. You can request Dos Equis and Heineken beer. You also can select one bottle of liquor and a wine every night. Dimond Club has about 4 or 5 things different on the menu you can order. You get butler service, which is sort of cool. From the moment you walk-in the great you at check-in and walk you to your room. Dinner- Zen, Japanese Cuisine.. You have to make reservations quick for the Hibachi because it fills up fast. I hear it good. I enjoyed the Taj restaurant, Indian Cuisine. Casino- It's sort of hidden away, but if you like to gamble it's cool to have on the property. Seaweed- Yes, the beach has seaweed and some people were cleaning it up.. Kids- The pool is definitely great for kids. All White Party (Friday) - It's nothing big, everyone has white on by the pool area where the entertainment is located. Covid-Testing- Was simple and easy. You bring your passport and money. The test is taken the day before you leave. I dont think anyone even really look at our paper at the airport. Overall, I rate this a 4 star because there were a lot of walking up and down stairs. There are some fondation issues, you definitely have to watch your steps. I don't think it's a good fit if you have trouble walking and the drinks wasn't what I expected. The hotel could definitely be remodel. However, I had no problems with my room it was absolutely gorgeous and the view was stunning.…
The resort was beautiful, large and amazing. A different pool every corner you turned. So many fabulous restaurants and the food was delicious. Better than any all-inclusive resort we have stayed at. The entertainment, though was way too loud until midnight every night. So don't get a room overlooking the main music stage. The beach was not so pretty, however. The waster was very brown looking and the seaweed was terrible. Therefore, no one wanted to go to the beach after the first morning. However, our trip was flawless because of Gabriel A @ the concierge service office. He couldn't have been more accommodating to our every need. He gets a 200% for servicing the guests. It was perfect because of him.
Smoked Margaritas are fire! 🔥 Sooo Delicious and Mikhail was very friendly and great mixologist at Agave! Thank you Agave Team and Derick Castro y Lorena! Great team The coconut shrimp was Amazing! Staff was very friendly across in all areas. The facilities were clean
