What a unique pleasure to spend a week at Layla Guesthouse in Puerto Morelos! Our host, Robin, and the entire staff at Layla were so accommodating and inviting we immediately felt like family. The accommodations were clean and comfortable, and the weather was perfect.

Layla has only six rooms, so it is impossible to feel crowded and the staff was attentive to all our needs. The small café which is part of the guesthouse has an amazing vegan menu filled with delightful surprises – all of which can be considered culinary masterpieces. In addition, there are a variety of entertainment from singing, rooftop yoga, and Karaoke, and even a movie night in the garden during the week.

The room we stayed in was Josefina which boasts a private entrance from the garden and came equipped with a small kitchen, King size bed and stone shower on the second floor. The large windows and cross-breeze rendered the AC unit obsolete, and it felt as though we were staying in a jungle canopy. (You will have to ask Robin why the room is named Josefina – you won’t be disappointed!).

Layla is just a short walk from the Puerto Morelos city center with nearly 50 restaurants and many shops as well as a nice grocery store and access to standard excursions including snorkeling, fishing, etc. (Our favorites included La Sirena, Osteria Barocca and Moelle Once).

The accommodations alone warrant a top rating; however, Robin, Steve, Jimena and the rest of the staff make a stay at Layla rate well beyond perfect. From the moment you arrive and meet Robin, you get a full sense of his love for the area and especially the people of the Yucatan peninsula. If you have the opportunity, allow Robin to take into the interior and enter the world of the Mayan people. The “Mayan Experience and Cenote Tour” will literally take you back in time in an immersive experience meeting local Mayan trades people and enjoying a cathedral-like cenote deep in the lower jungle. Skip the ATV rides and zip-line tours and enjoy a truly memorable experience.

We cannot wait to return.

I loved my stay at Layla Guesthouse. I came to Puerto Morelos as a solo traveler for a few quiet days prior to meeting up with a group of friends on Isla Mujeres, and my time at Layla turned out to be the most memorable part of my trip. Layla is unique, and wonderful in all the ways that matter most to me when I am traveling solo. I felt welcome there. The multinational staff is like an interesting and diverse family, and it was a privilege to get to talk with them during quiet times in the cafe on the ground floor of the inn. The food is fabulous, and I wound up eating most of my meals there because I wanted to try everything on the menu. The cafe is vegan, and the chef does vegan food really, really well. There is a good selection of perfectly blended fruit drinks, unusual smoothies, and coffees. The cafe does not serve alcohol, which helps keep the atmosphere pleasant both in the cafe and adjoining parts of the inn. The inn is a perfect size, with only six rooms, all different. My tree-shaded and quiet room, Josefina, overlooks a secluded garden at the back of the inn. Great shower, good air-conditioning, comfortable bed. The inn has a roof top deck with a 360° view, perfect for watching the sunrise, and a small plunge pool for cooling off in the afternoon on the second floor overlooking the ocean. Yoga is offered on the roof deck at dusk several times a week, and there are often casual evening events in the cafe including music and karaoke nights. Spa services are available on site. The inn brings in a superb massage therapist, Marcos, from Cancun, on request. It is an easy walk into the main tourist area of Puerto Morelos, with lots of restaurants, a good supermarket with a secure indoor ATM, shops, and access to the public beach. There are more restaurants a short taxi ride away across a mangrove preserve in the commercial zone of the town, and a botanical garden with hiking trails.
The owner, Robin, leads a once a week tour into the interior of the Yucatan, which was the most interesting day of my memorable and fun trip (Mayan Experience Cenote Tour, reviewed separately).

Inexpensive, so don't expect the fancy Ritz Carlton. Do expect a fancy tree house. Surrounded by nature, quiet, comfort, and friendliness. Felt quite safe to be there. You can feel the cool breeze from the beach. The AC and free Wifi in the rooms are strong. The Wifi throughout the property is strong. Our room did have electrical issues that maintenance dealt with swiftly. The "pool" is quite small. Not for swimming, but great for cooling down.
Close to the town center, beach entrance, supermarket, and tons of restaurants/bars. 30 mins south of Cancun Airport. 10 min cab ride to the old town across the highway, with more amazing food. All the cabs seem to know where Layla Guest House is.
The cafe has an amazing vegan menu. I'm not a vegan, but I am now a fan of it. They serve great juices/smoothies, eggplant parmigiana, pizza, and empanadas. Oh those empanadas!!! If you are staying at the guest house, just make sure you get the 10% discount at the cafe. It wasn't till the end of the trip that we realized we were not getting the discount in the mornings.
The owners Robin and Steve are so warm and welcoming. They were able to set us up for a couple tours. We had an amazing walking food tour in the old town with Chris. Our experience with Robin and Paz during the Cenote tour was a favorite. The owners also introduced us to the miracle massage therapist Marcos, who uses the Layla Spa room to work his magic.
Thank you Layla! You make me want to come back to Puerto Morales!

Layla’s Guesthouse is perfect in so many ways. The setting is serene, accommodations comfortable and clean and the staff so welcoming. We spent a week here and are already planning our return. Puerto Morelos is a wonderful small town to explore and Layla’s is set in the perfect place. Everything you need is within walking distance and the cafe downstairs has a delicious and varied menu.

We felt welcomed the moment we stepped onto the patio—the owners are wonderful, engaging people and highly knowledgeable of the area - be sure to take the Cenote tours they offer (reviewed separately) - you will not be disappointed. The staff are so friendly and accommodating. Between the staff and the owners, it felt like visiting friends we didn’t know we had.

We enjoyed moonlit evenings at the rooftop bar and in the pool that overlooks the ocean. Our room was comfortable, spacious and immaculate. There is no detail overlooked here. Also, you’ll find plenty of authentic, delicious food nearby. Between the cafe at Layla’s and the restaurants nearby, every meal was wonderful.

Bottom line, this place is as close to paradise as you’ll find in the Yucatán.

We had a trip planned for Playa Del Carmen and ended up coming in two days early so we could visit Puerto Morelos as we had heard alot about the area. Prior to leaving we joined "friends of puerto moleros" on facebook so we could have access to local information. Upon landing at Cancun airport, we sent a message out asking for where to stay in puerto moleros and we got several replies suggesting "Layla Guest House". We decided to give it a try so off we went. Needless to say, we fell in love with Layla Guesthouse, the staff and the owners. The best way I can describe it? "A little slice of heaven"! After 3 days at Layla we went to Playa because we had a reservation we had already paid for..... but after 3 nights in Playa, we called the owners and asked if they had any vacancies because we wanted to come back. We got the last room again so we packed, left Playa early, and spent our last 3 days back at Layla Guest House! Layla Guest House is perfect for those who want to get away from the everyday stress back home. A place where you meet amazing, wonderful people who make you feel welcome. A place where the food is made from scratch and cooked up to perfection every single time. A place where you can totally relax and appreciate the simple things in life. A place filled with the meaning of living life to the fullest. Coming from a girl who only stays in posh hotels, I can honestly say, you wont be disappointed! if you are looking for flashy, fancy, don't come here. If you are looking for a real escape where you can take in the fresh ocean air, sleep like a baby at night and celebrate life with amazing people, then this is your spot. The rooms are beautiful and you will also love the rooftop pool and bar. The open air restaurant on the first floor is fantastic. Activities include yoga, movie night and live music. You'll fall asleep at the end of the day totally relaxed and thankful for the experience and it will be hard to leave here. We had the pleasure to get to know the owners Robin and Steve who are truly special folks. Combine Layla Guest House and Puerto Moleros and you have the perfect vacation!

Layla is like a secret garden and absolute indulgence for your senses. Everything in the guesthouse is very thoughtful- rooms are beautiful and complete studios. We stayed in Josefina and everything from the furniture to a "sponge" was a piece of art. Green, airy, lush and handcrafted, with a lovely cafe downstairs, that turned into a broadway class karaoke experience one of the evenings we stayed there. Steve and Robin have created a very special, welcoming place and are active and loved in the community. Robin's cenote tour must be the best in the world! Delightful fusion menu inspired by Steve is also a collaboration of the whole crew: special thanks to Ray, Jimena, Jesse and Lucio for all their amazing contributions into the atmosphere of the place. Also, there's a pool with an ocean view, rooftop Skybar with swings and lounge chairs, and a yoga deck to top it all off. Must stay!!

Robin and Steve (owners) have created the loveliest, friendliest, and most comfortable and affordable place to stay in Puerto Morelos. The units all have separate entrances (it's like your own apartment), but you feel part of a community.

The restaurant boasts amazing food and service, and the managers are hands-on and available anytime you need anything. Depending on the time or day, there may be live music downstairs, which was very enjoyable.

One of our days, they arranged for the most incredible masseuse to provide an hour-long massage. The prices of everything are more than fair and, even though there is a chill atmosphere, it is first class all the way (with no pretense.)

I loved my stay and if I ever return to that area (which, by the way, there is a lot do and see not too far away), I will absolutely stay at Layla Guesthouse again. We had the Oscar room, and it was perfect.

We had a lovely stay here. If I were a solo traveler this is definitely where I would stay; Layla has a very homey welcoming feel with plenty of opportunities to engage with others with in the common areas (a cafe and cute rooftop chill spaces.) Our upstairs room was comfortable and charmingly decorated, and the mosquito spray made available for guests was a most thoughtful touch. Attentive service and two beautiful cats completed the feeling of home; Layla's staff works hard to make you feel welcome.

Okay, it's true. I'm a Layla Guesthouse groupie. Love this place and it's owners. The guesthouse is small but a true treat . But, if you don't stay there, one should stop by soon after arrival to plan what activity one wants to be involved in at Layla.

For me, this trip is was all about sunrise Yoga! Yep, 7 a.m. on the rooftop deck as the sun rises. I don't even like Yoga and I become a convert. There are different teachers and the chef is also an instructor and she can tell you all the different types. I fell in love with Kundalini Yogo with Sasha. But, any type of Yoga at Layla for the morning person, whether you like yoga or not, is a must.

I'm having fun in NYC with my "Steve" haircut. Getting compliments everywhere I go. If nothing else at Layla, I don't miss a Steve or Naomi haircut. Marco was not in town, but if he was, I wouldn't miss his massage either.

There are Cenote plus tours by Robin, talks, movies, excellent fare, music on weekends and for me the guesthouse dweller, the hammock in the very back of the back yard to just chill. Love that space.

Thank you Layla for another wonderful escape. Miss you already.

I stopped in to work and have some lunch and had such a nice time. The food is phenomenal, the best chicken noodle soup I've had outside of southeast asia. The staff is extremely warm and welcoming and kind. They let me hang out and work here (I'm a software designer and the wifi is quick enough for digital nomads to get some work done - important in Puerto Morelos) I only wish I could stay longer. You will not regret dropping in.

Hi, indeed, PM is a small town. Layla is 3 blocks from the town plaza. There is plenty to do, snorkel boat to reef. Layla has activitties too, evening programs (talks, salsa lesson, yoga, movies). We just returned from PM and stayed at Layla for 2 weeks. Walked to beach yoga in morning, beach across the street, breakfast and lunch at Layla, and lots of restaurants within a few blocks. It is lovely, easy, safe and relaxating all at once. Hope that helps.

HI Kelly, Thank you for your interest in Layla Guesthouse. Many travelers have enjoyed and recommended USA-Transfers for the airport transfer. Taxis are expensive from the airport, around $80 USD one way, there is also a local ADO bus for about $5 USD that stops at the highway bridge next to a taxi stand where you can find a cab to get to Layla...$2 USD. In high season the studios complete with King bed, kitchenette, AC, inner patio and garden go for $850 USD plus tax per week, or about $140 USD per night including tax. Wonderful SkyPool for guest use,,,across the street from the beach....short stroll to the main square so nicely located.

Answer from Themexicangayboy
Puerto Morelos, Mexico47 contributions12 helpful votes
Hello Deb...I assume you are asking about the beach in front of Layla Guesthouse.... We have umbrellas you can borrow to take to the beach. In fact, only bars and beach clubs that own a "concession" have a right to place commercial palapas/lounge chairs on the beach. The first 20 meters from the water is a federal zone and cannot be developed. Our beach has the high school on it so there are no concessions and is more natural and less developed. Those more developed beach areas are about a 7-minute walk from Layla.
