After being advised by our friend to stay at this hotel, we booked in as we travelled down from North West England. We were very disappointed in what we had been faced with and since then have been fighting to get a response from any of the staff at the hotel. Please see below my review and the email which I sent to them and have still yet to hear anything back. Hello, I am writing this message to express my concerns on the stay that we had in Colchester this month. The problem originally started as we dropped off our bags. We made our way to the restaurant/bar and were told about the new system of scanning the barcode on the table to order food/drinks. After a long 4 hour drive, we wanted to settle in and were prepared to have a few drinks and some food. Unfortunately, as we entered the bar, it was completely empty besides one man who was sitting on the seats, drinking coffee and watching the news. To my surprise, we thought this person was a customer. As we roamed around the bar looking for some service, the man finally approached us and with little knowledge asked what we were looking for and what we would like to drink. We checked the app and only a limited selection was on there. After ordering a drink, the service was still extremely slow. No one checking if we wanted another drink/no one at the bar/ no one at the reception. After finally getting to order the food, we were greeted with what seemed like a frozen pizza for 13.50GBP and a pie that also looked like it came from the supermarket for 10.00GBP. After spending a total of 110.12 GBP we decided that we had to go to a nearby bar to see if we could receive better service (Which we did). When we got back to the room, the radiator was on and we could not switch it off throughout our stay. After a sleepless night, it was the same situation of under staffed and under serviced. One of the chefs actually told us there was only 2 members of staff on that day. We are fully aware of the difficulties during these current times, however, I'm sorry to say but this was just unacceptable. I would like to be contacted by a representative to see how this issue can be resolved. Thank you.

I have two main issues with this hotel - one of which I found quite disturbing. The first (more minor) issue I encountered was when I phoned the Holiday Inn booking line when the government guidelines announced hotels would be re-opened. I was advised this hotel was now accepting bookings from the public but as we have friends who live nearby (who we planned to meet up with) I thought it might be best to 'double check' with them first and they kindly visited the hotel to confirm this in person on our behalf only to be told by a kind gentleman called Darryl that the hotel still remains closed to the public - so my question is why the conflicting information? Good job I never initially made the booking over the phone otherwise we would have all been turned away on arrival! Upon hearing this we booked to stay at another hotel nearby for the duration of our stay. Secondly, our friends who live close to the lane where this hotel is situated suggested we pop over for a drink now the hotel has re-opened again. This was several days later nearer to the end of our visit. We were hesitant due to the earlier issues we encountered with booking but decided to give it a go as I was told they have a lovely bar area and a good selection of drinks etc. We arrived and sat down at a table and used our phones to scan the barcode on the table in order to use the app to order food and drinks. This was reasonably straight forward to access but how elderly people or people without phones get served here is rather questionable - so not particularly well thought out in my opinion. Bar staff or any staff for the matter were nowhere to be seen. We went to the reception which was also deserted. Anyhow, we spent a good 15-20 minutes sitting in the bar area looking through the drinks menu on our phone only to find that no alcoholic drinks were available at all (only soft or hot drinks). We thought this can't be right as we could see a selection of alcoholic drinks stacked up in the various coolers behind the bar. I mean what hotel doesn't have alcohol available right? So we thought we better just question this with the next member of staff who appears and was told by an uninterested Alex that 'Sorry, we don't have any alcohol available' who then shrugged his shoulders and walked off. We laughed amongst ourselves in disbelief and decided to go elsewhere. Absolute joke! Now for best bit. As my group picked up their belongings to leave to go elsewhere, another member of staff (I assume she was more junior) who was extremely polite and well mannered approached us (who obviously overheard us being told by Alex no alcoholic drinks were available) admitted to us that was not true at all and that they only had a delivery of stock arrive literally days before and even went so far as to tell us that due to the bar/restaurant being less busy at the moment and less staff being on duty that it was and quote 'probably more likely that Alex couldn't be bothered to serve us as its more in keeping with his interests to turn customers away because he's like that sometimes when left in charge'. We could not believe what we were hearing and that Holiday Inn would take this bizarre attitude when surely they would want to keep customers and build up business after all that has gone in the world recently. Our friends were even local residents to the hotel and have visited over many years for drinks and were so shocked by this response that I very much doubt they will return again. We also later heard from our friends that another long standing local customer they are in contact with got the same treatment from the same person after this happened - so at least we know Alex's customer service wasn't just reserved for us! I have no idea who the management of this hotel are or whether they are even aware or perhaps agree with the bizarre attitude I encountered from the delightful Alex are what the Holiday Inn actively encourage - but would suggest business will get far more worse before it gets better with this character left to hold the fort! Such a shame.

A comfortable and clean Holiday Inn hotel a little out of Colchester town centre. An excellent breakfast and generally only let down by a couple of indifferent staff, others being really friendly and attentive.

I had an extended stay of over 4 weeks in the holiday inn during January and February, occasionally I was joined by my husband and daughters but mostly I was on my own. It was a difficult and exhausting time and the hotel staff were amazing. All of them. Reception, the restaurant and breakfast staff , the night staff .. every one was so kind to me. I have never quite experienced any think like it. With all my heart thank you

I'm a big fan of all holiday inns, the service, the food, the cleanliness. This one was great, the breakfast was just amazing as there was a lot of options to choose from and the man working/greeting was very kind. Our room was spacious and it had everything you'd need: wifi (slightly glitchy), tv, iron + board, hairdryer toiletries, towels, lamps, etc. The hotel itself also has a pool, gym, bar, steam room and plenty of outside space and parking. The only downfalls were the lack of channels on the tv/quality of it and the pool was full of children jumping in and splashing so it was hard to go for a proper swim.
