We would highly recommend Augill Castle, having just spent a relaxing couple of nights there en route home from our holiday. Normally, we would never stay in a hotel with our four kids (too many of us to fit in, too formal, too stressful) but everyone had a brilliant time, because Augill is informal yet makes you feel you are... Stayed for three nights in August in the Little Castle, which offered more than enough room for our family of four (kids 11 & 14), including small kitchenette which meant we could keep food cool and prepare picnics for days out (the hotel staff kindly froze our ice packs each night). We liked the combination of our own space but... More

Hi Sharon Thanks for your review. The rattling boiler is now fixed and thanks again for bringing it to our attention, a part needed replacing. We're thrilled you enjoyed your time with us. The Little Castle is due for an overhaul this autumn so come back in the Spring and see how we've changed things. As for bar snacks -... More

Firstly can we say what a lovely castle and a lovely home Augill is, also the staff were lovely and very friendly and any issue was rectified quickly but sadly it was not for us. It does say on the website it will not be for everyone and we are one of them. For the money we paid, £200 a... More

Dear Susie Thank you for your fair and balanced review. You're right that it takes two to tango and not everyone dances to the same tune. We are, as you point out, a country house, a home that welcomes guests, rather than a hotel and we work hard to get that message across on our website and in our PR.... More

we stayed just one night for our wedding anniversary and the place is beautiful we stayed in the Gate House is excellent and has plenty of room, but the whole place is just fab! They promise that you are treated as a house guest and that's just how it felt, its not a hotel but a home that is a... More

Thank you for your review. Interestingly, exactly the same things that made your stay special, the next reviewer thought detracted from their experience which just goes to show that we're all different and what a rich tapestry of life that makes. Our philosophy sums it all up: Is Augill right for you? Choosing somewhere to stay is more difficult than... More

Lovely area and grounds , even though it was raining. The afternoon tea was lovely. Sandwiches, scones and a selection of miniature cakes. Not over facing in the content which is great. Staff friendly and helpful. A lovely afternoon had by all and would love to go in the future if I was in the area.

Just returned from a short break at this beautiful hotel . I was with three children and my friend with her two children. We had a superb time. The bedrooms were very convenient, with plenty of space and adjoining childrens rooms. All beautifully decorated to suit the style of the property. There are plenty of great conveniences for the children. We had... More

What a fantastic stay at the Augill Castle! But, for coast to coast walkers, beware... the castle is about 6-7km from downtown Kirkby Stephen, so you will probably need to take a cab to get there (which, by the way, was very affordable around 10-15 EUR for a one-way trip). On the balance, however, it was my personal favorite accommodation... More

my wife and I plus another couple booked a weekend and a 2 night stay. we paid approx. £170 per night per room but found the visit disappointing. it is certainly different from the normal run of the mill hotels as the hotel is situated in an old castle type building. The rooms vary and our first night stay caused... More

Thank you for your review. We're sorry you didn't think our maintenance regime is up to scratch. We think we concentrate on the important things and most of our guests agree. We're glad that your room move met your requirements. You asked to move because the antique four poster bed in the original room you chose was not big enough.... More

Visited for afternoon tea for Birthday present for my elderly mother. Absolutely gorgeous place. It was a lovely afternoon so my sons asked to play tennis; in the grounds was a tennis court. We visited on Sunday as a little treat for our 6th wedding anniversary. We were booked in for afternoon tea. We have been all over the place having afternoon tea over the past couple of years and I must say that this was one of the nicest. The only thing we were upset about was that we had no cash... More
