Everyone has heard of the Montanita party beach town of Ecuador, but what many people miss is the quiet village of Manglaralto just a 20 minute walk away on the beach or a 5 minute taxi ride. If you are the type of person that would prefer sitting in a hammock, hearing the ocean from your room, and all without the noises of a party town this hostel is for you. We absolutely fell in love with this place and the owners. Luis and Caty are super friendly and hospitable. During the day you walk 2 minutes to the beach that's practically private and then in the evenings you can sit in a candlelit atmosphere among the hammocks and get to know the other travelers. It couldn't get much better.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Tagua for 5 weeks. We had an amazing time at the lodge. Its a perfect place to stay outside of crazy Montanita...only a $1.50 taxi ride away. We enjoyed the town of Manglaralto...a few shops, and on the beach there is a few bungalow restaurants that do $2.50 lunch. The rooms at Tagua are basic, but colorful and cozy. I loved the outdoor kitchen and living areas...just wake up in the morning, get some fresh veggies, fruit or fish from one of the locals passing by, make a coffee and hit the hammock! The beach is a 5 minute walk and you can hear the waves from your room. Would recommend in a heartbeat! Louis and Caty are amazing and can't wait to come back and visit!

Spent 10 days or so at Luis' and thoroughly enjoyed his company and property.

The rooms are rustic and simple, but they are more than comfortable and spotlessly clean. All rooms have mossie nets, and in truth, they are needed as there are a few in town.

The outdoor communal area is really lovely. There is a well equipped kitchen and comfortable seats and hammocks.

Luis is a fantastic host - warm hearted, funny and generous. He showed us around town when we arrived and we often had a sunset beer or two at the great bar overlooking the beach (Beach Bar) or later at Playa de James.

Manglaralto is a quiet and relaxed village about 25 mins walk along the beach from Montanita. Its beach is very quiet and beautiful (and less affected by the tides than elsewhere), and if you want a party, it only takes 5 mins in a taxi to Montanita.

We wish we could have returned before heading to Peru. An absolute gem of a host in Louis and a superb welcoming little village.

If you are looking for a room in Manglaralto, you are probably staying a bit longer in the area or you are looking for a more tranquilo vibe than montañita. In that case, this is the spot!

The trees and palm roofs make the whole courtyard/open air kitchen/communal areas about 20 degrees cooler than the street. the rooms are cool with just a fan. 2.5 blocks from the water. wifi & water included.

Luis, the owner and host is laid back and can answer any questions you may have - he speaks English & Spanish.

Such an amazing place to stay. Wish I didn't have to leave! The place itself is very clean, has a lovely little garden, well stocked communal kitchen, amazing communal areas including a hammock space, 2 dining areas and a bar area. It also has great wifi, strong enough for us to stream Netflix. It's super chilled out and the owner, Luis, is so welcoming, kind and generous. He speaks fluent English and Spanish and is very helpful if you need any help with your Spanish. He owns a local farm and it's not uncommon for him to come home with produce he has grown and share it with everyone. The other great aspect of staying here is that it's very close to Montanita, only $1.50 in a taxi or approximately a 30 min walk. I'd highly recommend Tagua to anyone. It's like a home away from home.

Tagua Lodge is a very laid back, budget lodging in Manglaralto. It is a beautiful 1/2 hour walk along the beach to Montanita. You can collect beautiful shells and rocks along your way. Tagua Lodge has all you need to cook your own meal and you can keep things in the refrigerator. The owner, Luis, is so very attentive and helped me in any way he could. There are great conversations around the communal table and Luis shared some of the native foods like yucca. He loves his coffee so if you are coming to stay bring him some coffee, I say. The town of Manglaralto is a little Ecuadorian bedroom community. The people are very friendly and all say hi as they walk by. There are a few little grocery stores and a street vendor around the corner that sells chicken and hot fries for $2.00. There are also a few places that serve Almuerzo..the Ecuadorian lunch that definitely fills you up for $2.50 to $3.00. If you want to lose track of time, beach comb, talk to some interesting people and stay in a very nice budget hostal with a wonderful owner...Tagua Lodge is your place. Luis introduced me to yucca "pizza" and made a delicious plantain bread ..think banana bread. I highly recommend it and would go back in a heartbeat. I know I'll be back. It feels like home when you've been out wandering for a day...and nice to come back to the peacefulness after a day in Montanita...just walk down the beach. You can also take a taxi for $1.50 but why would you want to do that when you have the beach to yourself (just about) and you can wade in the warm water all along the way. Loved it.

Tagua Lodge hostel is one of the nicest places we'be been to in 7 months of travelling. There, I instantly felt like home. I've heard so many stories of people coming for a day or a week, and staying there for months and even years and I'm not surprised why. If it wasn't for our booked flight, I wouldn't leave!
Lodge is a perfect hub for digital nomads and people who appreciate comfort. Excellent wifi, neat and cozy commune area. All rooms with private bathrooms, hot water, well supplied kitchen.
Town of Mangloralto is safe and very pleasant. It has a few stores, a bar, hospital. Pretty much everything you need. And if you want some noise, party town of Montanita is only 20 minute walk along the beach.
It's so easy to fall in love with this place! The owner, Luis is a wonderful man!

Warm friendly environment! Luis the owner, has been an amazing resource. Not only does he speak fluent English & Spanish, but his welcoming attitude make the Lodge feel like home! He helped me learn my way around town.

I have a great room upstairs, cool ocean breezes and walking distance to the beach and everything else in town.Th e kitchen is a REAL plus! The ability to make home cooked meals after months of traveling is a welcome comfort. Many "Family" dinners with the rest of the guests make this feel like home! A great place to relax ad get away from it all!

I had the pleasure of staying at Tagua Lodge for a week. I can't thank hosts Luis and Katy enough for making me feel so welcome, at ease and feel as though it were my home away from home. I loved my tidy, spacious room with on suite bathroom and comfy bed, opening the shutters up in the morning to a beautiful garden and making breakfast in the orderly and well-equipped shared kitchen. As I was travelling alone, it was great chatting to Luis or Katy in the morning, both informative, funny and willing to help with any queries. The wi-fi was great and I had access in my room, as well as the shared areas which included the hammocks. It is one of the few places I've stayed in Ecuador, where I was able to communicate in English. Manglaralto is really relaxed and a lovely community, beside the ocean. It is also close to Dos Mangas which has a great hike up to a waterfall. Gracias amigos, un gusto compartiendo con ustedes!

"wifi in common area, not great, but adequate. luis was very friendly and helpful. nice common kitchen area. we had room on street which was a little noisier but still quieter than anywhere in montanita. yet only 20 minutes along the beach...or a cheap taxi. manglaralto does not have the amenities or restaurants of its party town neighbour but for us was a much nicer place to just relax."
