two night stay just after lockdown lifting
Lovely 2 night stay in a double room in the main part of the castle. There was a lovely welcome from the host when we arrived and covid regulations are adhered to inside the building with sanitiser at key points. The room we had was on the 1st floor and had plenty of space for a couple with a large adjoining bathroom which had a bath with a shower above. There was a kettle in the room with tea / coffee, 2 small bottles of water and a couple of snacks. There was also a small decanter of sherry for us to enjoy. Due to covid the rooms have a notice for you to display on the door so your room is not serviced but you can ask for items to be topped up e.g. towels, tea etc and any other requests you might have. This was fine with us as we were happy no-one was going to enter our room until we departed and a pack of tea/coffee etc was left outside our door for us. The castle grounds are nice to wander around and you can sit outside and have afternoon tea if booked. The area is surrounded with fields which had sheep / lambs in and was lovely and peaceful except for the occasional sound of the lambs of course. There are also a few chickens roaming around. The breakfast was really good quality which includes a full cooked English breakfast with Vegetarian option available and lighter options available as well. The dinner is a set price for 2 or 3 courses and was nicely cooked and presented well. Overall I would recommend a stay here.
Hello Thank you for your lovely review which sums up so perfectly all that we do to try to create lasting happy memories for all our guests. Best regards Simon, Wendy and team Augill

    What a place!
I booked a couple of nights for my wife's 50th birthday and to say it earned me brownie points for the rest of my life would be an understatement. I made her cover her eyes until just as we arrived up the path. When I told her she could open them she just stared and said "It's a castle. It's a bloody castle" and immediately started to cry. Upon booking in we were given a quick tour before being given our keys to the room. We stayed in Pendragon where it is said that Queen Victoria stayed whilst on her way to Scotland. Thankfully the sheets had been changed. Upon walking in to the room my wife decided to burst into tears again. It looked perfect with the grand wooden four-poster bed standing free of the walls, two low backed Chesterton armchairs in front of an open fire (with a bag of briquettes ready to be set alight) and an old organ with a small tv set atop. The en suite bathroom is down a couple of steps with contained a very large (and deep) iron bath with a rainfall shower above. The first day, a Monday, we opted for afternoon tea instead of an evening meal and were told that many guests cannot get through it; so if we could not then to just let them know and they would box up what you couldn't so that you could take it to your room. We couldn't and so we did. The cooked English breakfast, the next morning, was the best of everything especially the Cumberland sausage which was just solid meat. Also available were cereals, porridge and continental breakfasts. The evening dinner was just simply sublime. My wife had salmon and I had feather blade of beef, both of which just simply dissolved in our mouths. I have not eaten better anywhere in as long as I can remember. Bravo Chef. The staff were just as perfect as everything else about this place. They always smiled, always had time for a word and always made you feel welcome. In historical terms it is a relatively new castle but as my wife so eloquently put it on our arrival, "It's a bloody castle!".
What a treat to have such a lovely review as our first after lockdown. We're all working really hard to maintain the feel of the castle and to ensure that current social distancing guidelines impact as little on the enjoyment of our guests as possible. Our staff are smiley and friendly but it is guests like you that really make them want to come to work. We hope we'll see you again one day soon. Best regards Simon, Wendy and the team

    Perfect
A stop off on the way to Northumberland for Christmas and I had always wanted to stay the night in a castle. I cannot rate this hotel highly enough it was perfect and more. Romance but also family friendly and felt more like being a guest in a beautiful home than a hotel. Not too rural but also off the beaten track. It was decorated beautifully for Christmas and all of the staff were super friendly. Every main room, bedroom, hallway, bathroom had been decorated with enormous love and attention to detail. A lovely open fire in the bedroom, with a comfy four poster bed and roll top bath. A small kitchen was also available for guests. Downstairs were several rooms with comfy sofas, an honesty bar, cinema room and dining area. Breakfast was included and served with Emma Bridgewater pottery, a favourite of mine. The evening meal was perfect and very good value for money. We have told lots of our friends about this gem and hope to visit again.
Thank you so much for your warm and generous review. We seem to have hit your spot and hope to see you again soon! Keep telling like minded friends .... Warm regards Wendy

Food is amazing as is the service. We took our dog and stayed in a garden room. Very comfortable with lovely touches. A decanter of sherry for pre dinner drinks. Afternoon tea in the room on request.

Another fantastic getaway to the cosy retreat! I love the charm of Augill, grand reception rooms and cosy bedrooms - properly grand with big traditional luxury bathrooms. I had a great night sleep, the duvets are awesome! Great place to visit for a family/couple looking to really get away from hustle and bustle, settle down in the library with a book and a beverage. Wendy & Simon are fabulous hosts, warm, charming and always have time to share a story. A special place that we will be returning to.

As with many previous visits we found ourselves under the same spell this castle of Wendy and Simon’s has cast before. The charm of quirky but sumptuous rooms relaxes us entirely and food was a feast of local fare. If you have missed this Piece of Brideshead, revisit your travel plans and find it. Iain & Anna - York

We attended a vow renewal ceremony for my daughter and son in law and the castle was like staying in a country house. The rooms were spacious and very comfortable, I particularly loved the big comfy bed with feather duvet and feather pillows, it was heaven. I think Augill is about the best place I've ever stayed in and I loved everything about it. Breakfast was well cooked and fresh, there was a big pot of tea which was a big hit with me. The staff were lovely and friendly, location was stunning. I have nothing negative to say. It may be a bit tired in places, but that added to the charm of the place.

Christine What a happy day it was - and the sun shone! How kind of you to say we are one of the best places you have ever stayed. I think that is down to our lovely staff, the history and character of the building and its location. Yes, some bits are a little tired - but rather like all of us, the castle wears its age with pride and is no less loved for it. Hopefully we'll see you again. Kind regards Simon & Wendy and the lovely team

Hats off to the guys at Augill for helping us create and have an amazing vow renewal and family party. They went above and beyond to make everyone feel welcome - even going the extra mile for some of my family. We’ve visited Augill a few times over the years and have always loved the relaxed and very chilled vibe of the place. Thank you so much all of you xx

We only stayed one night, but our family of four greatly enjoyed Augill and the grounds around it, which include a play area and tennis courts. The food was very good and there were lots of games and places to relax.

Stayed at the castle for are Wedding Anniversary. Stayed in the Gate House. Has afternoon tea on day of arrival which was lovely. Nice change from finger sandwiches. Had evening meal both nights, food really good. Staff all very nice and friendly. Had breakfast both morning and again all very nice. Castle main rooms all as you would expect with lots of places to relax. On arrival shown to the Gate House. This is on two levels with living room down stairs and bedroom and bathroom upstairs. When shown to bathroom, gentleman stated "oh this looks nice its been redone since I was last in here". Unloaded car and went to put drinks in fridge. This was disgusting. The drip shelf at the top of the fridge was cover in what look like black dirt, did not touch. The rest of the fridge looked like it had not been cleaned for weeks. Living room carpet near door covered in brown marks and a brown stain. What looked like a leather settee had rips in two of the cushions. Bedroom room carpet in one corner had dead tommy spinner on the floor and under the dressing table white feathers, still there when we left. As for bathroom being redone, I think all that had happened is the floor had been repainted. Bottom of bath covered in black scuff marks. The Gate House cast £480 for the two nights for bed and breakfast. This does no include the cost of aternoon tea or the evening meals. At that cost I would not expect these problems. Really not good enough. When paying bill on Sunday morning never asked if we had enjoyed are stay. Just a thank you. Now the Manager/Owner may ask why these problem were not reported. My answer would be why should I? Augill Castle presented these rooms to us on arrival and you thought this was acceptable to do so. What would you have done? Changed the fridge, changed the settee, cleaned the carpet ect. If so why was this not done before we arrived? You may also say these problems are because the building is old, as you have done before. There is a difference between a building being old and an old building not being cleaned. Also this castle is up for sale. Is this why you do not care about the state of your rooms, but still charge the same price?

Response from Simon Bennett, Owner at Augill Castle
Responded 3 weeks ago
Dear Elaine Thank you for your review. How lovely that you have taken the tine to commend us on those things that matter most - friendly hospitality, great food and comfortable surroundings. Having reviewed your negative comments, while we agree that there is no excuse for a dirty fridge, does a scuff mark on the bottom of the bath panel that we actually had to get on our hands and knees to see, a feather under the dressing table or a spider in the corner (who, believe us, will be far more at home here than you were) cause you this much angst? In any busy hotel it is near impossible to keep on top of every item of maintenance when guests are coming and going so quickly in the height of the season. This is no excuse because in an ideal world we would be able to employ somebody with a paintbrush to go around the rooms every morning as you have no doubt seen on documentaries about Claridges and The Savoy. But then you would be paying a lot more than £480 for two nights in a split level suite in its own tower in a castle. Or perhaps when our fallible but utterly lovely team are replaced by AI there will be no more oversights but then you probably would have something to say about the inhuman way in which you were treated. You say why should you point these things out? Well, having done so we have changed the sofa cushions, cleaned the fridge (which was an oversight) and spot cleaned the carpet. We got rid of Henry the spider but his cousin Horace has already moved in. Had you voiced your displeasure to us directly rather than stew about it and then vent online you might have had a more enjoyable stay and if you’d done it nicely we’d have probably bent over backwards to make you feel like Queen of the castle. We are sorry we didn’t manage that on this occasion. As a parting shot, we’d have taken all this on the chin were it not for your extremely rude and unnecessary comment about the castle being for sale and us not caring. How dare you! Best regards Simon, Wendy and our utterly fabulous and hard working team.

We had our wedding here in summer 2023. An amazing experience all around that we would highly recommend to anyone. The staff was friendly, super helpful, took care of all the meals (and they were vegan-friendly, gluten-free friendly, and not to mention, delicious). It's a bit of a journey coming from out of the UK (we opted for trains to Kirkby Stephen, some guests rented cars) but well worth it. To Wendy and Simon, and the rest of the staff, thank you so much for an unforgettable experience.
