We didn't stay here, but visited in the evening for food and came back for breakfast! It was wonderful. There was a bit of confusion at first about what we wanted because Mama doesn't speak English, but her son soon got it sorted out and she made us a delicious and generous meal. It was very good value. Also enjoyed the beautiful garden. We arranged to come back for breakfast, which was also very good. We looked inside a room while we were there - clean, spacious, hot water, a/c - so can recommend it for a stay.

+1
We stayed at First house as the 1st and 2nd night of our tour with Lanka Excursion Holidays and had a wonderful time.
The room was spotlessly clean with modern bathroom and excellent wifi and shower. Bed was comfy and air con worked well.
The hospitality was great - nothing was too much trouble, we were made to feel very welcome.
The food we ate during our stay (2 dinner and 2 breakfast) was authentic, plentiful and very flavoursome.
We did a cooking lesson which was a brilliant experience and we are looking forward to making the dishes when we are back home.
We also would recommended taking the morning tuk-tuk tour which takes you to some lovely photo opportunities and the oldest stone bridge in Asia which was beautiful and fascinating...(& would be completely impossible to find if you didn't have a guide!)
We felt very safe and well looked after and would definitely stay here again in the future.

After a while, no matter how good they are hotel buffets can be a bit repetitive. What a change to arrive (in a small group tour) and have a locally cooked lunch spread out before you. Cross legged on the floor doesn't suit everyone but there is a table and chairs for the unbendables amongst us. Very large selection of well cooked and spicy foods in clay pots with eating dishes being banana leaves on woven plates. Favorites included fried fish, bitter gourd and okra. Fruit for desert and/or curd with Palmyra treacle topping. Does not appear to be a drop in restaurant, so needs your tour guide to select if near Mihintale. Recommended. .

My family and I had three wonderful nights at First House. This family run homestay is honestly the best I have ever stayed in. Nuwan and his family are more than accomodating. Each day Nuwan took us on various adventures around the region and by night his mother cooked us fantastic meals. The house itself is beautiful, air conditioned and clean. The whole experience gave us a glimpse into the everyday lives of people in Sri Lanka. I’ll be back again one day!

Our group of six enjoyed a traditional Sri Lankan lunch at First House. Our charming hosts, Nuwan and his mother, prepared an absolutely delicious lunch which was presented in the traditional way using mats on the floor. Relaxing on the front verandah of this delightful villa and enjoying the wonderful food was one of the highlights of the tour.
Many thanks to Nuwan and his mother for this special experience.

We stayed here for 3 nights and it was the best. Nuwan and his family are great hosts. They opened up not only their accommodation but also a look into a wonderful family life. Nuwans mum cooked home curries. His sister helped out at breaky time with a true Sri Lankan menu. The rooms we stayed in are very clean, airconditioned with the best beds for a great nights sleep and a good ensuite attached. I highly recommend you use this accommodation and you can do so much using this as your base.
Thank you Nuwan and family

Our family stayed at First House over Christmas. What a great experience! Nuwan and his family saw to our every need. We were treated like royalty in the house. His guide service is beyond compare. He is extremely knowledgeable. If we ever tour Sri Lanka again we will book a stay at First House and guide services from Nuwan Gajanayaka.
