We had an amazing time visiting the rainforests of Borneo with uncle tan! The experience was great. We seen so many different animals, insects and plants.. of your looking for any sort of luxury then this isn’t for you, the accommodation is very basic but it makes the experience far better! It’s nice to escape every day life and social media while your surrounded by wildlife😊 our guide otto was superb and explained so much about the things we seen on our trip! He really does know his stuff. One thing I would add, it would be nice if there was binoculars/scope to use while on safari to look at birds etc. this would definitely help. Even if the company suggests to guests to bring along their own. Over all great trip and an experience we won’t forget!
A once in a lifetime experience but given the opportunity, we would come back. The lodge is what they say it is basic, but all the necessities are there. Shower, bed and most importantly mosquito net! The food is also basic but yummy, compliments to the chef. The water and beers are cool to keep you hydrated at the end of a safari or trek. Don’t forget to bring cash. We saw over 60 different species of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. The highlight was spotting a mother and a baby orangutan, happily eating their breakfast just after the early morning drizzle. It makes me happy that they are obviously procreating and therefore hopefully in time, and with education on how to preserve them, their numbers will once again go up. We saw them in the dying minutes of our last jungle safari, so a little tip do not miss any of the outings. Other highlight would be the probiscus monkey family, gibbons, Bornean colugo (formerly known as flying lemur), black horn bill, blue throated bee eater, and hundreds of flying fox waking up at dusk flying over us as we cruise through the river. Many thanks to Aslan! His knowledge and amazing eyes at spotting wildlife has made it possible for us to tick this trip off our bucket list as a huge success. He was very professional and he made sure that my husband and I very well looked after. He even lent me his face mask for our jungle trek which saved my face from getting eaten by mosquitoes. On that note, my advice is to bring your sense of adventure, patience in finding wildlife, lots of loose (NO BLACK) long sleeve and long pants, and plenty of mosquito repellent!!…
I had an amazing time at Uncle Tans! The accomodation is extremely basic. No hot water, no glass in windows or flyscreen, no doors, no fans, and the beds/linen have seen better days, however the wildlife viewing is incredible. I was there for 2 nights and three days and I saw over 50 mammals/birds. The highlights for me were the orangutans, gibbons, thornbills and civets. Azlan was a fantastic guide and is incredibly passionate about the wildlife. If you don’t mind roughing it, this is an incredible experience! Just don’t forget the repellent!!!
If you're looking for air conditioned luxury and a hot shower, stick to the expensive lodges. If you're looking for a genuine jungle camp, amazing guides and friendly staff, the opportunity to see all sorts of wild animals, waking up to monkeys on your roof, simple yet tasty food, amazing scenery and a unique Borneo experience... Then choose Uncle Tans. Drop your expectations, you're never guaranteed wildlife, even though we saw 60+ species. Only in the final ten minutes of our last boat safari did we get to see orangutans... And it was amazing. (hot tip: don't skip any of the activities... You'll regret it) P.s. Otto you're a legend, thanks for being our guide for three days!
If you're looking for a special experience, are ready to go outside your comfort zone and love wildlife then Uncle Tan's is the place for you. Their website is accurate and they warn you about the basic accommodation and bathroom situation. However for us this added to the experience. The guides are passionate and knowledgeable. At some points they were even more excited than us, running into the jungle after elephant tracks or tracking a civet in the pitch black. We saw lots of wildlife although sadly we didn't spot elephants or orangutans. Other groups did in the days before us so it is entirely possible. I would recommend binoculars. We didn't have some and it was hard to see many of the birds. On that note also bring a lightweight sleep sack, pillow (or a Hoody to roll up), wipes for a wash, Mossie spray (a good one with deet) a strong torch and hand sanitizer! The camp is incredibly well run. You have briefings and a schedule to stick to. The food was REALLY good. Compliments to the chef! There's also a little shop selling drinks, snacks and other bits you may have forgotten. If you're ready for an adventure and lots of fun don't hesitate to book here. …
