Best resort stay we have ever experienced. From pick up at the Porto airport for a 6 day stay through to drop off at train station, everything was perfect. The personnel at this hotel is extraordinary. Each person introduces themself to you. Jenny at the front desk, all of the food and beverage service personnel especially Romana, Juãn, Manuel, Tiago and so many more. The housekeeping staff is efficient and pleasant. A request is made and promptly implemented. Rooms are nicely designed, spacious and clean. The whole resort is spotless and well maintained. Ample spaces inside and out to enjoy the property. The property has beautiful trails and views of the Duoro Valley and surrounding mountains. Plenty of free events to attend and enjoy. Easy to arrange transportation to Lamego to tour this nearby medieval town. The fitness facility has top equipment and is clean. The spa is very special and treatments are world class (Raquel). The nutrient rich food served here is sourced from the property, is perfectly prepared and creatively served at every meal. The menu varied daily. Wine tastings were informative and you are able to easily order for shipment to US. Totally worth the money to stay here. Many thanks to the staff for making our stay so very memorable. Your efforts were totally appreciated and we think you are each wonderful.

We stayed at this lovely hotel for our improvised Honeymoon during COVID-19. Not only were we incredibly welcomed by Vanessa from Front Desk, as well as Rafael from the restaurant did a fantastic service during our stay. 5 star hotel, followed by a 5 star quality staff. It's all about the little details, your car being washed right before it's handed back to you, kits for the current pandemic (masks, alcohol gel, etc), the SPA amenities post-treatment, the location, the amazing views... and so much more! We will definitely repeat the experience next year for our 1-year anniversary. Thank you for an amazing experience and keep up the good work, this was truly the best hotel we have ever went to.

We stayed as a couple for 2 nights in mid February. We had a Quinta Deluxe room with a balcony. The room was excellent and more like a suite. Photos attached. The staff was without exception friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the bar the first night (a Club sandwich type affair) and in the restaurant the second night (which was pricey - about EUR 150 for 2 people without wine - for 3 courses but which was of exceptional quality). The spa and indoor was also lovely.

My only constructive criticisms would be:

1. We knew this was a smart, expensive hotel and expected to pay high prices, but we did feel it was a bit more expensive than it should have been. A G&T was EUR15!

2. The hotel and grounds are immaculate, have lovely views over the vineyards, and there are riverside walks. HOWEVER, the local towns are run down and offer nothing to the tourist. So my advice would be to stay at this hotel if you simply want to relax, use the spa, eat fine food and drink port and not move outside of the hotel gates. But if you like to explore, there is nothing to be recommended in the vicinity.

Dear Geraint1976, Thank you for your feedback. We do have a list of activities available for the guest to see and book, both in house and outside the hotel: those activities go from workshops on how to do kombucha or pickles, to wine tastings in wineries and even tours through Lamego. We believe there is plenty to do and see :) We hope you have the chance to visit us again soon! Best regards, Nick

A wonderful hotel that i recommend !

The staff is very high level : service is excellent
The place is quiet and very relaxing
The rooms are beautifully decorated, very large, very clean. The bed is very comfortable which is very important !
The client experience is really enhanced by the six senses app on your iPhone and on the Ipad provided in your bedroom : you can control everything in your room from this app (lights, curtains, A/C,...). There is a live chat with the hotel staff where you can ask anything you want : restaurant booking, spa booking, a new towel, toilet paper, ask for the turndown service to be done when you leave the room to head to the restaurant. This app makes a huge difference in your client experience ! Just as in the Four Seasons hotels.
The spa is amazing, every treatment room has a breathtaking view on the Douro Valley
The food is amazing : the chef cooks everything for you at the breakfast, using locally grown fruit and vegetables. So tasteful and fresh ! Same for lunch and diner : very good and tasteful.
The pool area is very relaxing and the staff is very helpful there. They offer some home-made ice creams, detox juices all day long.
A Special thank you to Sarah at the breakfast and the pool ! She’s definitely devoted to your well being and she is highly professionnal.

Stayed for 3 nights for our 10 year anniversary as part of our Porto trip. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed. I was a little worried at first if the hotel would be pretentious, but it wasn't at all. Sad we never got to see Aqua the dog, we couldn’t find her anywhere.

Room: Quinta River, what an amazing view we had. We were offered a complimentary upgrade, however we politely declined due to the upgrade being Valley view (the room itself was amazing). The Quinta River room was perfect for us, with a lovely sitting area in front of the window. Couldn’t hear any neighbours & very comfortable bed.

Spa: We both had a massage as part of the romantic package, which was very enjoyable & interesting to see they use homemade products for the foot soak. The spa facilities were perfect.

Food: Enjoyed lunch in our room one day, which was perfect. Had dinner on both evenings which was again perfect. Shame we couldn’t enjoy food outside due to it being a tad too cold. Now breakfast really stood out, honestly the best I have ever had – Avoquit all the way! I felt spoilt.

Grounds: Beautiful and plenty of walks to do, go up high & find the hanging pod. We had wine, chocolates & fruit on out first day in a secret spot, which was so magical (and luckily warmer). We borrowed their bikes (free of charge) & cycled to a local Quinta which took 10 mins – a must do.

Staff: Fantastic customer service. They always stop to say hello & ask how things are. Marlene from the welcome team really stood out, always smiling. Only thing we found a little annoying, was at meal times, three different people asked every time if food was ok – wine waiter, food waiter & someone else. Just the once would suffice, but we are laid back & don’t like being fussed over 😊

The staff really take notice of things, something that made me smile after eating a starter, the waiter laid out new cutlery & put my knife & fork the opposite way round, as this is how I eat – the fact he noticed, shows how great they are. He also spotted me saying I liked their pen (made of cork) & gave me one (slightly embarrassed he saw that).

Overall: On check out, we noticed a lot of entries from the Wine Bar had been added (over 200 euro worth). We hadn’t used our wine card once; this was easily cleared up when we handed over the card for checking. I’m sure it was an honest mistake. 100% would return here, it may be on the expensive side, however for special occasions you can’t go wrong. Oh and the train journey to here from Pinhao and the back to Porto, was gorgeous.

Thank you to the whole team and for our complimentary bottle of port on our anniversary. We will enjoy this chilled in summer (if the UK get any sun). GET BOOKING!

We booked this resort at the last minute for two nights and had a great time. The guest room was amazing and spacious. Our bathroom was as large as some hotel rooms and we had a great rain shower in the shower room. You have your pick of outstanding Douro wines in your room and the wine library has a fun dispensary which you can access yourself with a keycard that you receive upon check in. The restaurant is first rate and the service is great - everyone there treats you like a VIP. But the standout at this resort is the spa and the resort’s exceptional therapists. These extremely well trained professionals include an acupuncturist and numerous certified physical therapists. This place is worth every penny. But since we paid a lot of money for this outstanding resort, I do think it’s okay to nitpick: the spa lockers do not contain slippers, robes and towels. I was told they are not allowed to stock the lockers with these items; fair enough but the resort should escort the guest to the locker room and give them these items. I had to hunt for them and because I couldn’t find a robe anywhere I had to ask an employee if he could find me a robe. Last, just a fair warning to anyone driving to this fantastic resort: there is a lengthy narrow driveway carved into the side of the hills that I found perilous and frankly quite scary. If you are arriving at night, I highly recommend you call the hotel and have someone meet you at the front of the driveway to take your car down that driveway to the resort.

We just returned from a 3 night stay and had a fantastic time at the Six Senses. The location is beautiful surrounded by hills with views of the river. The service really does stand out at Six Senses. The check in experience was excellent, Diana checked us in and showed us around our room, which was large and well appointed with all the conveniences e.g. universal plugs so no need to bring an adaptor. Nice touches such as complimentary water, sparkling wine, tea and coffee and chocolate. The food is exceptional and we also hugely enjoyed the chefs table experience (€200 per person and you are eating fantastic food in the middle of the kitchen, great experience). We also booked massages, which were expensive but not prohibitively so and were enjoyable. Lots of things to do in the resort such as complimentary paddle. Eco friendly with no plastic but not inconveniencing guests. Overall a great trip with outstanding service, I will recommend to friends and family!

A warm welcome awaits you at this beautiful hotel. The grounds, pool and interiors are impeccably maintained and a credit to the team. The breakfasts are probably the best we have every experienced, cooked to order and made with super fresh local produce with many ingredients sourced from the hotel gardens. Our thanks to Katerina and the breakfast team for looking after us so well.
We loved the App to control the room utilities and communicate with reception. Something that maybe the hotel could suggest you download before arrival.
We had a massage and facial at the Spa which were very good and the treatment rooms had beautiful views across the Douro Valley.
Lovely touches to be enjoyed are the daily cake and tea selection for which you just help yourself (if you have any room after the breakfast!) and the chilled wine cabinet for you to serve yourself, payment being made by inserting a card issued by reception.
The only reason for the 4 star rating is based on the room which we found very disappointing and badly laid out.
There is nowhere to sit and apply make-up or dry your hair. The bathrobe hooks are located in the toilet and only a very small hook, actually in the shower, to hang your towel. There is no storage for toiletries, make up, etc so you have to cram everything around the sink. Our window was totally covered by trees making the room dark and obscuring the river view. We were also disappointed there was no outside space so make sure to check the room specification carefully.
Overall we had an amazing time and the weather was amazing.

The hotel is just beautiful. It’s like a walk into modern day tranquility. Everything is neat and clean and perfect! The views are spectacular and some of the elevators are as if you’re stepping into the view. The rooms are impeccable and everything is controllable via app including getting in touch with the front desk and concierge who both reply within minutes for every need. The automatic black out shades are awesome!! Not one detail was missed when creating this place. Every detail for comfort was well thought of. The breakfast was beautiful. Dinner was nice but not outstanding and I would have liked an eating area by the pool. As well, note that while I did see some children, the second you step off the steps at the pool it’s not at all shallow. Kids would need to be greatly supervised when at the pool. Service is highly attentive and they were great with helping to arrange all activities. And not to forget, we were welcomed in our room with complimentary cookies, jams and most mini bar items! Exceptional stay.

I work in the travel industry and have been lucky enough to stay in some of the top hotels in the world. Six Senses Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful hotels I have ever had the honour of visiting. The food was the best I have eaten in my life, the staff so attentive and the scenery to die for. There was zero to complain about here everything was taken care of. The complimentary touches were a real treat too, the activities are endless ( I only wish I tried out more rather than eating so much and drinking the wine!) fresh fruit and smoothies around the pool, fresh bread & homemade granola yoghurt and fruit at breakfast served before you even order. The chefs table was a real highlight and even more special to see the care and attention that the chefs put into their work. I also love how eco friendly they are and how they are trying to go plastic free on the resort and doing such a good job of it too. We loved every part of this hotel and will certainty be recommending it to family, friends and clients in the future. `

What a wonderful dilemma! My first answer is that you will not go wrong no matter which option you choose. The Six Senses is a very special place, and was definitely a highlight of our trip to the Douro Valley. However, you make a great point in that it only really makes sense to spend that amount of money if you are going to have a chance to fully enjoy all that the place has to offer. My suggestion would be to stay with the farmhouse/winery, and see if it is possible to do a spa day at Six Senses, as well as dinner/drinks on the terrace.
