We spent 4 glorious days and nights in this resort! The Room was second to none and the view was out of this World! We also experienced the Restaurant 3 times with the expertise of Chef Nuno! He is a Master. We were able to enjoy the Spa/Gym and Pool. We will return in the near future!
We stayed two nights at the Douro Valley Six Senses. What an experience! Just top notch service and facilties. Our room was just stunning and the meals were wonderful We had the hotel book us a half day private tour that included a tour of a vineyard, an amazing lunch with wine pairings (at an exceptional restuarant), a boat ride on the Douro River and to cap it off - sparkling wine at a viewpoint. And of course a friendly and knowlegeble guide for the trip. Just book this hotel!
Six senses Douro Valley is an incredible property. It’s a perfect combination of old and new, classy and modern. The architecture of the old house is perched on the corner of a mountain, vineyard and the Douro river. Everywhere you look and turn is a perfect painting. The spa facility lives up to its reputation of a wellness hotel. It’s extremely extravagant, modern, and most importantly quiet and peaceful. I had two deep tissue massages, both time superb treatments. The property offers many interesting activities. We did the scenic walk and vineyard bike tour and had so much fun. The only problem for us was that the stay was too short(3nights). It’s our first Six Senses property, but for sure it will not be our last.
This was our 2nd visit and we love this hotel. Our break started off challenging when our airline failed to deliver our luggage on a bank holiday weekend so when we arrived at the hotel we were quite stressed and upset…however we were greeted with a wonderful room upgrade which had the most amazing views which helped us relax. We were then introduced to a fantastic lady called Angela in the hotel spa shop who helped us find some clothes and basic essentials until our luggage arrived 2 days later. Not only is the hotel amazing but equally important, if not more is the team of staff at the hotel who weee truly very kind to us and turned our vacation around from a very stressful start to an amazing break. We cannot thank the entire team enough - even before we arrived the GEM team helped us book a variety of activities, restaurants, and an amazing wine tasting experience at the hotel. We are already looking at dates for our third visit. I would also like to add that the food in the restaurant is gorgeous. The best hotel in Portugal…
A warm welcome awaits you at this beautiful hotel. The grounds, pool and interiors are impeccably maintained and a credit to the team. The breakfasts are probably the best we have every experienced, cooked to order and made with super fresh local produce with many ingredients sourced from the hotel gardens. Our thanks to Katerina and the breakfast team for looking after us so well. We loved the App to control the room utilities and communicate with reception. Something that maybe the hotel could suggest you download before arrival. We had a massage and facial at the Spa which were very good and the treatment rooms had beautiful views across the Douro Valley. Lovely touches to be enjoyed are the daily cake and tea selection for which you just help yourself (if you have any room after the breakfast!) and the chilled wine cabinet for you to serve yourself, payment being made by inserting a card issued by reception. The only reason for the 4 star rating is based on the room which we found very disappointing and badly laid out. There is nowhere to sit and apply make-up or dry your hair. The bathrobe hooks are located in the toilet and only a very small hook, actually in the shower, to hang your towel. There is no storage for toiletries, make up, etc so you have to cram everything around the sink. Our window was totally covered by trees making the room dark and obscuring the river view. We were also disappointed there was no outside space so make sure to check the room specification carefully. Overall we had an amazing time and the weather was amazing.…
Beautiful hotel and wonderful staff on the Douro River. The view from our room was fantastic. The rooms are spacious and comfortable. We celebrated our 25th anniversary at the picnic area and the staff could not have been more helpful in organizing a special event for our group. The included breakfast was a daily treat with lots of fresh items and entrees cooked in their wood fired oven. Dinner at the restaurant was delicious with excellent service. Great wine selection. The bar was always fun, and intern Gabrielle was a treat. Excellent service and always with a smile. Would definitely return for future visits
Stayed for 3 nights for our 10 year anniversary as part of our Porto trip. From the moment we walked in we felt welcomed. I was a little worried at first if the hotel would be pretentious, but it wasn't at all. Sad we never got to see Aqua the dog, we couldn’t find her anywhere. Room: Quinta River, what an amazing view we had. We were offered a complimentary upgrade, however we politely declined due to the upgrade being Valley view (the room itself was amazing). The Quinta River room was perfect for us, with a lovely sitting area in front of the window. Couldn’t hear any neighbours & very comfortable bed. Spa: We both had a massage as part of the romantic package, which was very enjoyable & interesting to see they use homemade products for the foot soak. The spa facilities were perfect. Food: Enjoyed lunch in our room one day, which was perfect. Had dinner on both evenings which was again perfect. Shame we couldn’t enjoy food outside due to it being a tad too cold. Now breakfast really stood out, honestly the best I have ever had – Avoquit all the way! I felt spoilt. Grounds: Beautiful and plenty of walks to do, go up high & find the hanging pod. We had wine, chocolates & fruit on out first day in a secret spot, which was so magical (and luckily warmer). We borrowed their bikes (free of charge) & cycled to a local Quinta which took 10 mins – a must do. Staff: Fantastic customer service. They always stop to say hello & ask how things are. Marlene from the welcome team really stood out, always smiling. Only thing we found a little annoying, was at meal times, three different people asked every time if food was ok – wine waiter, food waiter & someone else. Just the once would suffice, but we are laid back & don’t like being fussed over 😊 The staff really take notice of things, something that made me smile after eating a starter, the waiter laid out new cutlery & put my knife & fork the opposite way round, as this is how I eat – the fact he noticed, shows how great they are. He also spotted me saying I liked their pen (made of cork) & gave me one (slightly embarrassed he saw that). Overall: On check out, we noticed a lot of entries from the Wine Bar had been added (over 200 euro worth). We hadn’t used our wine card once; this was easily cleared up when we handed over the card for checking. I’m sure it was an honest mistake. 100% would return here, it may be on the expensive side, however for special occasions you can’t go wrong. Oh and the train journey to here from Pinhao and the back to Porto, was gorgeous. Thank you to the whole team and for our complimentary bottle of port on our anniversary. We will enjoy this chilled in summer (if the UK get any sun). GET BOOKING!…
This hotel has it all. From the moment you drive down the rather steep windy driveway, you step into an experience that is pure luxury. From the homemade bread and yogurt at breakfast to the flawless recommendations from the sommelier as well as the beautiful rooms with every amenity you need, this is an exceptional hotel.
Long reviews tend to be complicated, so let me be as brief as possible (ok maybe not super brief). Five star need not be stuffy or unapproachable, and although Six Senses ticks all the luxury hotel boxes, the stars of the show are the people. Before discussing the staff, it is important to note that the hotel truly masters the difficult task of allowing the beautiful surroundings, rooms/grounds/common spaces speak for themselves, while catering to your every need in a totally unpretentious and authentic manner. Our room (Quinta River) was stunning and perfectly relaxing, the Spa was wonderful, and the food was excellent without attempting to be overrated gastronomy (so tiresome in other 5 star hotels). Wide variety of food and drink, plenty to do, and all the other trappings of a truly luxury stay. Yet, the people are the reason we will be back. From the moment we arrived, David was a rock star in a laid back yet professional way and I honestly felt he meant every single word when he said "contact me for absolutely anything at any time and if I am not here my colleagues will be happy to help." In fact, every single time we contacted David or others in the concierge/front desk staff, there was nothing they couldn't do. Perhaps more importantly, they never conveyed any air of being put out or shocked by our request (cold milk in our fridge, extra conditioner, flip flops instead of slippers, moving spa times, late checkout, etc.). Some would say this is a minimum condition of a 5 star hotel, but it was not the "what" but the "how" of it - not pretentious, no delay, no worries and flat out kindness. The bar and restaurant had literally the kindest, coolest, funniest staff. All pitching in, calling us by name, keeping us in stitches and making us honestly and truly feel at home. So many great people I could not possibly list them all, but we will never forget Johnny and Favio, who moved seamlessly between the bar and restaurant and made us smile/laugh/feel happy every single time we saw them. We don't often return to the exact same hotel when traveling abroad, but Six Senses Douro is the exception, and as we write this review we are already checking availability for our next getaway across the pond. Oh yeah and last comment. It rained the whole time we were there, so the gorgeous Douro Valley could not work her magic to impact this review. The hotel (and its staff) completely spoke for themselves, which is a crazy impossible task in the post-Covid world. If you are like us and love the luxury without the pretentiousness, this is absolutely the place for you. Worth the money - yes.…
Went here for a fabulous lunch. We were four of us and so we tried different items. Some are very good and few average to even bad - like peri peri chicken. But I wouldn't expect any place to have all items delicious. We went here for the experience if Six senses and got that. Outstanding property and service. Enjoyed walking in their lovely gardens. Would love to go back to stay here in future for sure.
