Big Bar Guest Ranch is proudly owned by Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation (SXFN), a community located in a semi-remote area on the the Fraser River, approximately 85 kilometers southwest of Williams Lake. Once two distinct bands, Canoe Creek (Stswecem’c) and Dog Creek (Xgat’tem), our two Secwepemc communities joined together in the late 1800s. We honour our separate histories and our coming together. In the 1860s, more than 10,000 people traversed the Caribou Wagon Roadin search of a new life, land to raise cattle, or a gold strike. Harry Marriott, an immigrant from England, started working for the notorious Gang Ranch, one the largest ranch in Canada. Marriot acquired smaller ranches and land parcels, eventually consolidating them into the O.K Ranching Company, with access over 200,000 acres of cattle country and wilderness. Marriott partnered with his friend and Vancouver banker, George S Harrison and sectioned off 100 acres of their mutual land acquisition for his personal use. This was the beginning of Big Bar Guest Ranch. Much is unchanged since the Harrison family used Big Bar Ranch as their family retreat. The original family home, "The Harrison House", built in 1936 with logs and stone hewn and selected from the property, continues to provide a cozy retreat for guests on holiday relaxing in the great room in front of the fire place, or playing a cowboy song on the guitar in the music room. Big Bar guests have access to the original acreage of the OK Cattle Company, and can venture out across unspoiled pasture lands and forests. What has changed is that Big Bar Guest Ranch is now a part of our shared community vision of becoming an economically and politically self-sustaining community living Secwepemc culture, language, and traditions in a healthy and safe environment. Stswecem’c Xgat’tem First Nation invites you to Big Bar Guest Ranch to experience the dramatic landscape of traditional SXFN Territory: interlocking valleys and plateaus, situated between bold and snow topped mountain ranges. It is our honour to share history as the original inhabitants of this land and welcome you to life on the ranch.

Let's start with the positive: Great nature and a very engaged manager! Now the improvement areas, which we also shared with mgmt: - Poor in communication: We got informed only 12(!) days before arrival, that there wouldn't be a catering as they were lacking staff. On day of arrival they wrote us in the morning that our daughter is too young for the horse back tour - even for the 1hr walk. No sign of that on their website nore the booking confirmation ("10yrs+ for half-day tour"). No way for us to rebook with such short lead time - Food: After we insisted in catering (because next restaurant / supermarket is 50km of gravel road away) they managed to find some untrained farm employees operating the kitchen. Btw. photoshopped pictures of food and dining area on their website and Tripadvisor do not reflect current situation and must be from better times - Cabin: Nice and authentic, but really dirty: A previous guest must have had a black dog in the cabin and its hairs we found in the beds, the bathroom, livingroom, everywhere. Windows not been cleaned since months, dead flies and cobweb everywhere and the pictures with mouse poop in kitchens are also authentic - Farm overall: Neglected - starts with facilities, lawns, area for kids (check your hammock), vegetable garden up to their junkyard they try to hide a little uphill - Staff: We perceived them being completely overstrained. No(!) one has a hospitality background. Manager told us they being understaffed, because of "current situation in the industry" and they try to get back to 10 employees (from currently 6). Dear owners: 10 employees to operate a farm AND hospitality operations this size!?

The facility is located in a remote but beautiful part of the Province of BC. It has potential to be a destination location but unfortunately is in a sad state of repair. The structures have significant historical background and could be very attractive. They do however need significant repair. Our room that was advertised as room with sleeping accommodations for two adults sharing a room was big enough for a queen bed but nowhere to place a chair and the second bed was in a 3’ wide loft that required climbing a ladder 8’ in the air. Water was not potable and no bottled water provided. The hosts did advise they had staffing issues and had just hired many new staff. Staff although not well trained were very friendly and tried very hard to make our visit enjoyable. Saying this was a 3/5 visit was being generous.

This was my 2nd time at Big Bar Ranch. The first time was a friend's wedding in 2021, it was incredible. There were some changes since I was there last. There is no longer a red-seal chef on staff, our dinners were very good but the breakfast in comparison to what we had previously was standard breakfast fare. We had eggs, bacon, and pan-fried potatoes for all 4 breakfasts it would have been nice to mix it up a bit...pancakes or waffles or granola. I am not sure I would order the breakfasts again. They were $21.00 each. The location and the accommodations are the big draws for me. The location did not change from the first visit :) but I thought the cabins were not as clean as our first visit. I will be back but I will likely bring my own food and bring a few items to clean up the cabin if need be. FYI - if you do have meals you cannot order or bring in your own alcohol. This was unfortunate for our graup as we are all foodies and enjoy some nice wine with dinner. I would have given the ranch 5/5 if a few things were different the second time around.

Great experience all round at Big Bar. We felt the family-run feel of the place from the moment we checked in, and enjoyed getting to know the staff each day. Our cabin was well-appointed and nicely decorated, was very private and quiet, and had a great deck and view. Food was fantastic - healthy, hearty, and locally sourced. Our horseback riding tour was really fun, the ranch dogs followed us the whole way! We went up to the lookout and through the forest which was a good variety. Was a nice touch to get a pair of cowboy boots and a hat to wear for the journey! Our wrangler was as authentic as they come, and we even found out it was his beef we had eaten the night before! I also loved that the horses roamed free on the property and we could walk by them on the way to dinner. Lots of time and space to relax and unwind here. Highly recommend!

We drove up from Vancouver for 2 nights and really enjoyed it. We were 4 adults, and did a 2.5hr horseback ride on Saturday. We also got the meal plans. Overall, the staff was amazing and the food was great. The accommodation isn’t fancy and is showing a bit of age, but it’s rustic and comfortable. The terrain and horse ride was really enjoyable. The trip overall was great value and I cant praise the staff enough :)

We had a great family time at Big Bar Guest Ranch during our recent stay. It's perfect during the covid time, away from the city, countryside stay, with an amazing view. The cabin has everything you need for a comfortable stay. The weather was nice, there was a bit of smog because of wildfire, but it cleared up quickly. The staff is amiable and willing to help, especially Eli and Jenna. My kids love going horse riding and spending time with goats. We enjoyed all the activities and every bit of our stay there. We'll definitely revisit. Thanks for everything.

We had a wonderful time at Big Bar, from horseback riding to eating delicious food, canoeing and hiking, visiting the cute farm animals, and relaxing in our cozy cabin during a thunder storm. The staff were wonderfully friendly hosts, and you can't beat the scenery. We would love to come back. Thank you so much, Elyse and Jenna!

Top event for us was a one hour horse back ride with Jenna. She was perfect with our grandson who is very nervous of new experiences - she gave us lots of information about the ranch and surroundings. The two meals we had were awesome! All the different animals kept us all entertained. The accommodation was good - our grandson loved having his own loft. This would be the place to come to relax and enjoy the outdoors!! Many cancelled because of the wildfires but no fires were too close - those who cancelled missed out on a great experience!!
