Block Island is known as one of the last best places on Earth, and our stay at the 1661 Inn added to our enjoyment of this beautiful island. We stayed in The Adrian room, one of the more expensive rooms oil the property, but the gas fireplace, deck, comfortable furniture and hot tub were all worth it. Our weather wasn't great, so we had a lovely room to relax in and read. We stayed just before the start of the season, so the breakfast provided was limited, but certainly sufficient. Wine and nibbles were also provided every day at 4:00, with what we term a "generous pour." The location is a short walk up the hill from the pier, and is an excellent jumping off point for walks to all parts of the island. We will be back again.

The inn was perfectly located just outside of town and very close to two other properties offering dinner service. Historically the Inn had provided full buffet breakfasts but as we are in the Covid 19 period, the breakfast was limited to muffins/yogurt/bagels and mimosas. Being able to have coffee and a small breakfast on the patio was a wonderful start to each day. They also host a wine and cheese hour in the afternoon and provided another opportunity to enjoy the patio and relax before dinner. Our 2nd floor room had an amazing ocean view with a semi private balcony with lounge chairs. The chairs in the room were very comfortable to sit and look at the view but were showing some wear. The bathroom was perfectly nice with a standard size shower stall and double vanity. Everyone at the hotel was very welcoming and helpful, doing all they could to make our stay enjoyable. The morning of our departure we also woke to an amazing sunrise view. Would definitely return.

This family-owned hotel takes pride in the details, from flowers in the room, pleasant and professional staff, chairs on the lawn overlooking the ocean to a location that is very close to town but not. This is a great hotel. One of my favorites. Not only are the rooms very good they have a beautiful garden and a 4:00 wine and snack get together daily. Another plus for me is it is a short walk to the hustle and bustle of Old Harbour.

We had one of the ocean-facing rooms in the main building and the view was fantastic. We could have spent our entire Block Island visit sitting on the patio looking out over the grounds, the pond, and the ocean. Our room had been renovated recently - it was bright and spacious, as well as immaculate. The beds and linens were exellent, and we heard not a sound from the other rooms, all of which were occupied. There was a hot buffet breakfast every morning and wine & nibbles every afternoon. It would have been perfect except that in spite of being assured of Wifi, there never was any internet connection. We tried all hours of the day & night and also in different parts of the building, but while we could log onto the Wifi, the connection never had internet! Other guests had the same problem. Two different front desk people seemed unsurprised and one told me that the lack of internet was part of the charm of the inn - not helpful, and not consistent with what is advertised! Ended up purchasing a hot spot capability for our phone because we had to email some documents while there. Given the price of the room and the quality of the other amenities, it was surprising and disappointing that we had to scramble on our own to arrange for the internet that was listed on the Inn's website as included.

Rita Draper, owner and proprietor, is the consummate host. The minute you arrive to check-in, you feel as though the world has stopped to pay attention only to you. The staff are masked and vigilant with social distancing, and yet as affable and accommodating as anyone can be during a pandemic.

We stayed at the Anchor House, room #1, second floor, rear of the building. Gorgeous distant views of the ocean coupled with refreshing gentle summer breezes were the perfect formula. Accommodations were perfectly quiet and comfortable for the little time we spent in the room.

Particular highlights of being a guest at the 1661 Inn properties include a daily fresh and classic breakfast, and boy have they figured out the perfect formula for pandemic dining. And on July 4th, Rita made her rounds to dining guests with a platter loaded with fresh veg and edible flowers straight from the extensive garden, in full 4th regalia. It was spot-on the best way to connect one to nature and your surroundings. Another highlight; a delightful wine & nibbles hour is included, as well. Served daily, 4pm, makes for the perfect moment one can take in the amazing surroundings and incredibly engaging service.

There are many places to stay on Block Island, but 1661 Inn can’t be beat.

1661 Inn is a lovely place to stay on Block Island. Great central location and just incredible views from the back. The lawn and the ocean. Morning breakfasts were delicious - kids loved them! (Please note no one is really wearing masks anymore, and the breakfasts are buffet style so everyone is handling the tongs.) There was also a lovely 'nibbles' times between 4-5pm. We stayed in the Cassius room. The room is nice. There is a king size bed on the first floor and then a pull-out couch and a hot tub on the second floor. The hot tub seems a bit out of place, as the bathroom is on the first floor. The bathroom is a bit oddly built; it's small and you can't use the bathroom unless you close the door. Anyway, those are mostly minor things. I think overall it's a lovely place to stay albeit a bit pricey.

We arrived early from PJ ferry at 8am. We had buffet breakfast before 10am and met up with Rita the owner. She always goes around greeting her patrons with her tray of garden goodies. I was excited that she included husked cherries and purslane too. Due to miscommunications, we had to wait for our rooms at the Anchor House until past 2pm. Yes, we could have changed and gone to the state beach even though the weather was rainy.
Our rooms were updated. There is a mini refrigerator even though the extra drawer bureau was taken away. Instead a sofa was replaced in its place. I had to share bureau space with my spouse. The big thing was that wifi was added to this building. Thank you, thank you! After many years of asking.
The cleaning crew in our building Samatina and a Croatian speaking staff were very efficient, courteous and helpful. We had extras upon request. The staff from the front desk to the breakfast crew are fantastic! You have great help from Haiti, Turkey, Croatia, Canada, and England of diverse group. They deserve more than their base pay. Every patron should tip them generously.
However, there are a few suggestions that the community room could be improved for card games or work area. The fan/light did not work well. The fans work but not the light as we have poor eyesights. We made use of the rocking chairs on the front patio. I personally liked to read and enjoy the breeze every morning. Also, the front screen door lacked a screw on the handle. If it’s not reinforced, the whole handle will be loose or broken due to missing screw. Just saying.
We look forward to another year of vacationing here soon. Thank you Rita, the crew and all back supports who aren’t mentioned. See you in 11months.

The 1661 is a slice of quiet paradise away from the city. It was the perfect getaway. The king-sized bed was comfortable, the shower was the biggest I've ever seen, and the breakfast served on-site was some of the best dining we had on Block Island.

It's close enough to walk to town but far enough away to get some much needed peace and quiet.

Best part- 4pm free wine and nibbles. You'll never experience 4pm the same way afterward. It's such a nice and refreshing touch later in the day after a day out on the boat or exploring the island.

While you're there, you have to stop by the Abrams Animal Farm and meet the variety of interesting animals.

Best place for a getaway from the city.

November is beyond the shoulder season so BI is super quiet, and the 1661 is a wonderful place to stay. We had a three day stay planned but gale force winds canceled the ferry for two days. The Inn was great at calling and letting us know the situation. Both days were fully refunded, and they were ready and welcoming when we got there...finally! The Nicolas Ball room is super spacious with gas fire place (welcome this time of year) double shower, soaking tub, refrigerator and in room coffee, and a nice sitting area. While most shops and restaurants are closed there are always a couple of options for eating. The beach was beautiful for walking and the streets were quiet. Generally excellent use of masks and distancing on the island. Would have loved to have the three full days but the one was a needed dose of relaxation and respite.

The Inn is located within walking distance of town. The rear of the property overlooks a lovely lawn beyond which is natural vegetation. We stayed in the Rathbone room which had a king size bed.; the room was not large. The bath, however, contained the biggest shower ever. Very cool.
Daily, at 4PM complementary wine and cheese is served. on the back porch or dining area. It is delightful. Breakfast is included and also served on the porch.

You can look at the rooms via website. We prefer to stay at the Anchor House Inn room 5 or 6 since we are adults only. If you prefer the 1661 Inn rooms, that is your decision. The room we stayed at 1661 was a little too dark for us although the deck faces the back of the building and has a great view of the sea and ferry going and coming at a distance.

We walked. It was around a mile or so. There is a bit of uphill. It rained one day and the 1661 sent a van for us. There is parking at the cottage. We did not brind a car, but did rent one for a day.
