We too ignored the UK Govt's advice not to travel to Sri Lang and pleased we did. Colombo airport is the easiest airport we've ever arrived at. 30 minutes after leaving the plane, we were in the cab heading for BP. The in room check in was a nice touch as was the mini fridge with soft drinks and snacks. The rooms are huge, spotless and all have lagoon views. We enjoyed sat on the balcony watching the wild life pass by, monkeys, peacocks, mongoose and the occasional hare. The food is awesome, tasty, well presented and the chef will even prepare meals not on the menu. The highlight of our stay was the dinner Nick arranged for my wife's birthday with her favourite music in the background. Priceless and will stay in our memories forever. The beach is stunning, but swimming is impossible. There is a rock pool 10 minutes walk away if you want a dip. However, the huge infinity pool overlooking the garden and watching the waves rolling in makes up for not been able to swim in the sea. We arranged all our daily trips through Kalpa, Nick's very able assistant. Don't hesitate to reach out with any questions, he always answers promptly. Nick and his team have produced a splendid atmosphere with a great vibe. I really miss sat in the bar enjoying a Village Manhattan cocktail Nick introduced me to. We have already persuaded friends to come with us next year, we're just waiting for flight schedules to be announced. I would strongly recommend BP be included in your itinerary to Sri Lanka

Good Sports! Whilst we wish many more travelers were independent of mind, there are upsides of running a quiet hotel! We’ve had time to refresh the place for the forthcoming season as you saw, but moreover I’ve had several opportunities to make new friends. So, well done for ignoring over-step motherly advisories (thankfully relaxed now) and thank you, for sharing your holiday with us. I relished getting to know you both, especially around ‘cocktail hour’ each evening, although my liver might say different!! I share reviews with the team when they're around; we are all smiling this morning thanks to your kind words, and, because you’ve taken Sri Lanka and us into your hearts. Despite being privileged to have read a few before yours, your review is up there with the best – thank you. The only thing greater and, hugely reassuring, is knowing you’ll be back with your friends and share this with the world on TripAdvisor. I’m delighted you experienced the best of the hotel, not least its team and abundant wildlife, returning home with enduring fond memories. I look forward to welcoming you back to refresh them and wish you a blissfully happy year and good health in the meantime. Thank you for your valuable custom, excellent company and unequivocal vote of confidence in Sri Lanka and Buckingham Place – a really smashing recommendation for those in your footsteps! Until next time… Our respect and fond regards, Nick & the Team

Despite the Foreign Office advising against all but essential travel at the time, we decided to go ahead with our trip to Buckingham Place. We are so so glad that we did. This is our 3rd visit to Buckingham Place and what a welcome we received both from Nick and all of the team. It was quite overwhelming. We stayed for 10 nights and had a fantastic time. We were also quite spoilt as we were the only Guests. Standards have not dropped, the service was excellent as was the food. Any shortages were not apparent to us as we both ate and drank too well! For Guests who have never visited Buckingham Place, the 25 metre Infinity Pool overlooking the Sea is the best I’ve ever seen. The rooms are fabulous, they are spacious and very comfortable dotted around beautifully maintained gardens. For Guests who have visited before, the buildings have been totally redecorated, in fantastic colours. Watch out for a new video on the website, coming soon. We spent most mornings walking through the villages or along the beach before enjoying our delicious long, lazy breakfast. The variety of birds and animals was fantastic including large monitor lizards, monkeys and mongoose. On the beach there were fresh turtle tracks every day. The sea is wild there and the noise of the waves crashing is spectacular. Despite everyone having a tough time, the welcome we got from everyone we met whilst walking was lovely. This is definitely the place to go if you want to recharge and be spoilt. All the team are superb, so attentive, polite and welcoming. Thank you all for looking after us so well. We saw no trouble in Sri Lanka, we still found it a very safe and welcoming place. The Country really needs visitors, so if you are thinking about a holiday, we would not hesitate to recommend it.

Overwhelmed. Since 2010, we’ve been privileged and blessed quite frankly, to ‘acquire’ a regular, very special clientele. Every single guest we look forward to seeing again and so inevitably, over the years we become friends. You must both realise by now we look forward to welcoming you back as much as any friend. This morning, you have overwhelmed us with your generous praise and kind support here on Trip Advisor - for us and Sri Lanka overall. I am immensely proud to read that the hotel I built and work in, has somehow become your most favourite in the world. Praise does not come higher – thank you very much for saying so. Luckily for us, intelligent travelers do their homework to discover as you did, assurances that I and other hoteliers give about visiting Sri Lanka are to be trusted and are the real story; that whatever day to day challenges we might face those challenges are ours not our guests, and a fabulous, safe, niggle-free holiday remains the norm! As you found at the hotel and everywhere, everyone you met was as welcoming as ever - more so perhaps, as your very presence inspired hope for an early tourism ‘bounce back’. We are ready for it – you may have noticed! I’m thrilled you like our new vibrant look but that also, we haven’t changed a bit. Our welcome, service, quality and ethos remain exactly as before. Thank you for coming back again, we enjoyed your stay too and look forward to visit number 4! Thank you again for your valuable good custom, your lovely company, and for putting the record straight for those in your footsteps. Your loyal support and unequivocal recommendation are without doubt, as good as it gets - we are humbled but over the moon! Until next time… Great big hugs to you both!! Nick & the Team

We are so pleased to have ignored the UK government's 'not to travel' advice and continued with our 2 week trip to Sri Lanka. There are no security issues here, it's how we remember it from our 2 previous trips - the people are so smiley and friendly - they just want you to enjoy their beautiful country. We spent 2 nights at Buckingham Place and wished we could have stayed much longer - this is a gem. Nick, Kalpa and the team couldn't have been more welcoming and hospitable. Despite the hotel being very quiet due to the lack of tourists following the recent political unrest, it was running as if nothing had happened, the quality of food, level of service and cleanliness were all exceptional. As we left, we were planning on how and when we could next be back!

Perfectly timed! Independently minded (yet to decide) travelers could not hope to be reassured more unequivocally; that visiting Sri Lanka is as it’s always been - a safe, diverse, happy and memorable experience. Thank you for your perfectly timed thumbs up for the island and us! By ignoring an out of date, ill-thought through travel advisory decimating thousands of livelihoods, you justify our optimism that we’ll be back on our feet this coming winter season. I’m pleased to report; our state of emergency is no more, and whilst challenges persist, those challenges are for us not for the discerning, supportive folk who visit Sri Lanka by allowing commonsense to prevail. I continue to reside here after 20 years. Not now or ever have I considered not to for safety’s sake or because of the growing pains of a developing country. Negative events in the UK can be far worse and more numerous, yet do friendly, developed countries issue travel advisories over them? I think not! We also wish you could have stayed much longer, and I’m personally delighted to know we made such a good impression. Thanks for taking time to join me for a drink during your short stay, I enjoyed your company very much. That you brought your good company and valuable custom to Buckingham Place and share your experience on Trip Advisor is enough. That as you left, you were planning how and when to return is the Holy Grail – thank you! We hope we can eventually add you to our 'regulars' list but for now, I’ll simply thank warmly and wish the both of you happy travels and a blissfully happy life. Warmest regards and respect, Nick & the team

We have been travelling for 2 and a half weeks with our 3 young kids and this place beats all expectations. The staff is of the utmost kindness, always there to pro-active help you. The food was the best we had, a creative fusion style mix between Sri Lankan and European food. Very delicious! The location with his large swimming pool with kids area and beach bar overseeing the ocean is astonishing. You are surrounded by a lush garden and a stroll on this untamed beach with the wild ocean is on its own worth the trip. The villas are very large and comfortable overlooking the beautiful lagoon. We loved the bathroom with open ceiling opening up to the sky. We really recommend this place that is so well-managed by the owner Nick. Alex

Thank you… Despite a hysterical international media, jittery travel warnings and the honest truth, that Sri Lanka is grappling with political and socioeconomic challenges like many nations, the island is as safe and blissful for travelers as it always is, albeit pretty quiet in terms of tourism due to the above. So, well done you for researching beforehand before discovering this firsthand and bringing your family to Sri Lanka on holiday. We were delighted to welcome and host you, and I hope the rest of your trip is as pleasant as your stay with us. We’re obviously proud to be told we exceeded your expectations, although wherever you went I would bet you felt equally welcome and embraced by your hosts. Having ‘the little feet’ around the place was joyous, their excitement, smiles and laughter filled our hearts and made up for the fact the hotel is so quiet. So please bring them back as soon as you wish, we had fun spoiling them and you all – you were easy to host impeccable guests! Your kind words shower us with wonderful compliments, including a humbling one for me. Thank you for sharing your happy experience and overview of the hotel on Trip Advisor, and for taking the time to write in. Your fabulous, up to date review could not come at a more opportune moment. Thank you for your good company and custom, and again, well done for visiting Sri Lanka at this time. Would you please persuade as many as you can, that we and Sri Lanka are ready, resourceful and resilient, and they’ll be as warmly welcomed as you were. I wish you all, safe and happy travels and a blissfully happy life! Warmest regards Nick & the team

My family spent two days at BP. Nick and his staff pampered us and made the stay memorable. The hotel is spacious, with joyful colours and several special spaces to explore. We really enjoyed walking by the sea by day and watching the turtles nest at night. We would have ( and the hotel surely would) appreciated more company and we can only imagine how the place is when the band is playing. But unfortunately there are few reservations at this time in Sri Lanka. We wish Nick and all his team the best.

Our respect... Please excuse my delayed thanks, they are as heartfelt as ever. I speak for everyone as I convey our gratitude and respect for continuing with your holiday as planned, during this period of political instability and economic woe. I am so pleased Sri Lanka (and us!) lived up to reputation for hospitality, and that you flew home with fond memories. As you say, we too would have appreciated more company. However, to have had yours, along with your valuable good custom we are sincerely grateful, and hope one day we’ll have the privalege to welcome you all back to a much busier hotel! As the country finds its feet, with optimism we go more colourful and upgrade in readiness to rise and enjoy happy days again. Thank you for your fabulous review and support for us all. Please visit again soon, and have a blissfully happy life in the meantime! Warm regards Nick & the Team

We absolutely loved Buckingham Place from the moment we stepped foot in it. Nick the owner was wonderful and clearly makes time to get to know all his guests and was truly fascinating to talk to and by the end of our few nights stay felt we were greeting him as a friend each time. All the staff were so genuinely kind, friendly and will do anything they can to help you. Umesh in particular took time to show us round and was on hand if we needed anything - so kind, polite and helpful. The food, juices, cocktails were all excellent and the decor of the hotel is beautiful. Breakfast was outstanding - the full Sri Lankan breakfast was excellent. The pool was gorgeous and on a few occasions we were presented with a freshly cut coconut to drink from or a freshly prepared banana smoothie - completely unprompted. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and we were greeted warmly wherever we went. We would absolutely return the next time we visit Sri Lanka and felt extremely welcome. Thank you Nick and the team for taking such great care of us on our honeymoon and making us feel truly special, we will never forget it. Kristina & Shanta x

Perfect honeymooners… Many thanks for sharing your happy experience of Buckingham Place with the world so eloquently and unequivocally. I recall the pair of you as if it were yesterday and can safely say, we could not have wished for a lovelier couple to spoil! Hosting honeymooners carries a little extra responsibility for us; if there’s one holiday a couple will remember each moment of for the rest of their lives, it’s their honeymoon. You made it very easy for us though, by being completely laid back, appreciative and respectful towards us all, and, if we’d slipped up on anything at all, I'm sure you’d have forgiven us! You humble us with your praise (if embarrass me personally!) so thanks again. I’m delighted you singled out Umesh especially, and warmly thank the team who did all the hard work. As did everyone, I thoroughly enjoyed hosting and, nattering away with you both, it was a pleasure and privalege. Along with your fond memories please also remember, we’d be thrilled to see you again - just as soon as you can get here!! Thank you for a spectacular glowing review. You felt special because you are, and so on behalf of us all I wish you enduring fond memories, a blissfully happy life and an early return to Sri Lanka! Warm regards & respect Nick & the Team

Rarely do we go back to the same place twice but after our first visit in 2019 we knew we would have to return to Buckingham Place. The place was as magic as ever with Nick and his team pulling out all the stops to make our stay as fantastic as the first, despite all the challenges brought on by the pandemic and the current economic situation. Everything is outstanding from the rooms, to the food and the service. Couldn't recommend enough and a big thank you from us for a wonderful and memorable time.

Great to see you again... Thank you for returning, I can think of no greater compliment than to welcome guests back, especially those who rarely return. With the many spectacular destinations, hotels and with only one lifetime, it’s a wonder anyone one returns anywhere! Your review made me smile, I imagined the previous one would be our last for a while. And, its title was enough quite honestly, but thanks nonetheless; you reassure travelers in your footsteps that economic or other woes facing the island need not be a barrier to a happy holiday. Behind the scenes of Sri Lankan hospitality we all are paddling madly like proverbial swans, but nothing is too much trouble for us and we need you now more than ever. It was a pleasure and privalege to host you again and hope it won’t be for the last time. Thanks for your excellent company, valuable custom, this ultimate accolade and, for your kindness and empathy for us all. We’re closed for 3 weeks essential maintenance and to take a break. Then, we’ll open for intrepid travelers as usual so please… keep on spreading the good word! Please come back again (and again!), until then but always, have a blissfully happy life. Warm regards & respect Nick & the Team

Well this was such a great spot! Beautiful spacious clean rooms with lovely effective and quiet AC. Lovely main restaurant area looking out over the beautiful pool and the sea beyond. There is a little path down to the deserted beach which is glorious. The food was amazing and service first class. Nick the owner came round all the tables in the morning and evening and had a little chat with his guests. He is such an interesting character, looks a little bit like Jack Nicholson, and, as we told him, really needs to write an autobiography! Quality place and we hope to return some day.

Perfect timing... Today sees our first offseason empty night since we reopened last November. I can think of no nicer way to end the season, than by reading and replying to what will probably be our last fabulous review for a while. Thank you, your magnificent thumbs humbles us and says it all. As for Jack Nicholson? He’d sure sell more copies of an autobiography than me, despite me being more youthful and better looking! In short, great reviews are the hotels lifeblood, they bring our next guests while motivating us to keep on keeping on. Thank you for your review, it could not be more appreciated or better timed - when fellow travelers start thinking about a midseason break. I’m off to the pool with a nice bottle of wine, but before I go I send heartfelt thanks from us all, for your good custom, fine company and Special support. Have a healthy and blissfully happy life. Warm regards and respect, Nick & the Team

This is a wonderfully relaxing place to stay. We started with the lovely surprise of an upgrade to the honeymoon suite. We ha a beautiful spacious room, with a very comfortable bed, and an enormous open area bathroom, complete with coconut palm. Just sitting by the pool is wonderful, with the sound of breakers from the ocean below. A range of birds flit through the garden, or drop to the pool. The food is great with a good selection of local and international dishes. Breakfast is when you want it - a great idea. I particularly enjoyed the bacon curry at breakfast, and the seafood lamprais (fish and rice in a banana leaf) for dinner. It seems nothing is too much for the staff. They were all so welcoming and attentive. The difficult decision might be where to sit to drink the evening cocktail. So many great choices. It's so relaxing, you won't want to go out, but we did two trips. One was to see buffalo curd being made, and the other was for an early morning boat ride at Kalametiya. When we left, the staff lined up like a guard of honour. It was quite touching. Nick has built a great place, with his staff. Highly recommended.

As recommendations go… ‘Possibly the nicest hotel we have stayed in’ is about as good as they get, on behalf of us all, sincere thanks for your exceptionally kind compliments and high recommendation. I was at a loss as to who had written in but eventually figured it out, prompting me to recall your stay fondly. Seeing guests relax and get the best from the place I find personally rewarding. More so however, when they engage with us and scratch the surface of where they are and with whom they're staying. I enjoyed your stay too, especially a morning spent nattering away with you. You travelled to Sri Lanka at a time of its peoples struggle for change, in spite of adverse media coverage you came as planned. As I’m sure you're aware, soon after you flew home things took a turn for the worse in Colombo. To my knowledge however, international travelers were not caught up in events, and whilst the island continues to face economic and political woes, the right to peaceful protest (and protection of it) prevails. I hope only fond memories of your trip endure, and, that you will recommend Sri Lanka and us for years to come. If the island is to pivot in the right direction it’ll need all the help (and dollars!) it can get. Thank you for your valuable good custom, excellent company and for this really super review. You were adorable guests so we’d love to see you again. I wish you happy travels and a blissfully happy life. Warm regards and respect, Nick and the Team

We somehow managed to miss Buckingham Place when booing our accomodation but from talking to some people it came highly recommended for its food too. And it didnt disappoint. It was quiet as we were in the low season but we had a really nice meal and cocktails prepared by the team. The tuna salad with mango and avocado was particularly good. Our only disappointment was that we didnt see Buckingham Place when originally booking our stay in the area as the hotel looks beuatiful! We will make sure to book in the next time we are in the area!
