We drove out to the east coast for turtle watching. Alas, we were a bit early in the season, but the stay at Leatherback Lodge was very nice. Of the many B&Bs we've stayed at, this is one of the most homey. Nella and Neville were helpful and very nice, and we really enjoyed talking with them about the area, the country, the history, and more.
We had 3 delightful rooms and were delighted by Nella's dinners and Neville's knowledge about the birds. Walking on their road proved to be a very fruitful birding spot. They were incredibly helpful when we were stranded with a flat tire. Their concern and follow-up was greatly appreciated. Wish we had had more time to explore the area.
Trinidad and Tobago are NOT third world cultures. We went primarily to see the birds, especially the hummers. The history of Trinidad and Tobago is fascinating. The wealth comes from petrochemicals and Port of Spain is a major port. I think of this country as a study in cultural mix, located at the end of a mountain chain connected to South America, that brings the bird populations together. Relics of colonization are all over and the culture is a mix of African, British, Asian Indian, and more. The food is fabulous. The roads are generally awful on Trinidad, better on Tobago. You have to work at exploring this country. This is really not a place to go to lounge on the beach and our snorkeling experience was mediocre, it's in the Atlantic. We did not schedule enough time to arrange for a night at the Pan yards. There are many different styles of music coming from Trinidad and Tobago, steel drum and calypso and the best known. And I didn't get to the natural upwelling of oil at the south of Trinidad. I need to go back!…
We had a quiet , relaxing, serene, weekend. Woke up to the birds chirping and a soothing cup of coffee on our verandah . The hammock and views of the tropical rainforest made it a great escape from the hustle and bustle . The accommodating host and hostess Nella and Neville were awesome . It was an awesome stay the food was delicious , and we were able to venture to the beaches ,light house , shark river and of course the cream de la creme , Turtle watching .
