This is a great location that probably cannot be bettered. Waking up to see the clouds below you and the Sierra Nevada mountains laid out in front of you is magical. That said there is a price. The two hour journey from Minca is tough even in a 4 wheel drive. Great to see what the vehicles can do, on the single track, but your whole body will be exhausted when you get to the lodge. The lodge is basic, with all in two rooms. It was fully booked when we were there meaning as a small party it was quiet crowded with big bird watching groups. Having your dinner in the lounge as restaurant is full is fine, but not when a large group of birders sit round you discussing their bird sightings whilst you try to enjoy the food. The food although simple is good quality and tasty. There is constant coffee, water and biscuits which is nice. The bar is an honesty bar and serves about 5 wines, 3 or 4 beers and cokes. All at a good price. Laundry is also well priced. We had a Kogihab room. This was a good 15 minutes walk up hill on mountain tracks. Good exercise but not for those with any walking issues or fear of the dark (no lights so bring a torch- the one provided is weak). Our local guide (Christian) was excellent as a bird guide. This is the lodge's focus. There are plenty of endemic bird species to see. There is limited information on the wider ecosystem, but that's not their thing although my interest. They are building new huts and a new restaurant which are much needed when they are ready. This is a great spot if you are a birder. We enjoyed ourselves but found the facilities slightly too basic (minimal hot water, limited internet, no shampoo etc in the room). We should have investigated more.

Unfortunately for us we could only spend 1 night in our fantastic Kojihab. The uphill walk to it was worth it but we had to get someone to carry our luggage. The Koji's are spectacular, the view's breathtaking and we didn't want to leave. The food in the lodge is also very good and the hummingbirds and other species around the lodge are wonderful. This is the ideal jumping off point for more birding, including many endemics. The road to get there and roads that lead to more birding are rough and you need to be prepared to get seriously bounced around but the drivers and vehicles are very competent. Good fun and so memorable.

Our birding group of 6 stayed here for three days, and it was heaven start to finish. We stayed in the khojis, a 15-minute walk from the lodge/dining room/hummingbird feeders. Our only regret was that our schedule was so full that we never did have an hour or two - awake - to hang out in our cabaña. The staff is terrific - helpful, cheerful and patient. It's a special experience to walk by a White-tipped Quetzal, and across a wiggly suspension footbridge to get to our room. Yes, the road is rough, moreso above the lodge than below, but that's part of the adventure.

Everything everyone says about the place is true in previous reviews. I would just to throw my hat in that this experience was incredible This bird reserve is extremely important and unique. I am not even a birder, and it was just amazing. We did the la Cumbre trek starting at 4am - facility was very accommodating with meals (please remember to bring enough water!). Stayed in khogi 5 at the top - well worth the view. On site Staff and Alejandro are all awesome. The ride was long, do pay extra to get the driver to stop at waterfalls near Minca. Plan extra time for slow travel. Drivers are good and everything was well coordinated. Bring nice big water bottles to refill. Will be back again and hire guide next time. ENJOY!

Colombia has never really been on my holiday radar after reading all about the cartels, drug trade and kidnapping. However, having realised the country is turning its back on its old ways, I decided to book a birding trip with Naturetrek. As I type this, I am sitting in the lodge, whilst outside there are a colourful array of hummingbirds whizzing by at such close quarters you can feel the breeze from their wings. I do hope that opening up Colombia will not endanger some beautiful and rare species that are already on the brink,of extinction. It does seem that Colombians are proud of their environment (although they really do need to grips with the plastic pollution, littering and flytipping).... only time will tell. But the vast array of species we have seen from our wonderful guides Andrea and Ferny is breathtaking. It's really beautiful here- do try and plan a trip here if you are interested in remote birding!
