An old, country house hotel set in big gardens. We stayed one night on the eve of my sister’s funeral. We had asked for a quiet, peaceful room and indeed we got one, at the back of the hotel. It was warm and comfortable, well-equipped and clean. We ate downstairs in the bar. The service was good and the food was excellent, but the bar decor and furniture was a bit tired and drab. Breakfast next morning was in the conservatory - an attractive space. The hotel was reasonably priced, but the breakfast was extra.

This is my second visit to Woodland Manor, 17 years apart and it hasn't changed. The place is looking tired in places such as the conservatory and some of the hotel rooms I visited. Room 20 is old, mouldy and really damp smelling. Whilst you'd usually expect this from a seaside property in the North of England, you don't expect it here let alone for £85 a night. Toilet was vibrating because of the DJ pumping more bass into the building around him than in his guests ears. Breakfast was bizarre, it was clearly of the microwave style with bored and tired looking staff and meat that you're unsure comes from a pig or that box our new chair came in. All in all, it wasn't a great experience and whilst I can't say it's gone down hill, it just really hasn't moved with the times creating a grim experience. Most of the staff I encountered are lovely though and were taking good measures to ensure Covid safety for the hospitality industry. Just teach the maids how to make beds yeah?

We arrived to a warm reception even though they was expecting a wedding party. Shown to our table which was set ready and smartly. Our drinks were ordered and arrived swiftly. Cappuccino & flat white, lovely. Afternoon tea arrived. Wow. Gin cake, chocolate orange cake. Sandwiches & scones with cream & jam.

I was recommended the hotel by a local company in preparation for an early morning meeting. There doesn't appear to be an abundance of decent hotels on paper in the area and hence this was a natural choice. There was a likelihood of more trips to the area and therefore I was keen to find a decent hotel for my overseas colleagues Having travelled around the M25 during rush hour, I arrived at the hotel in early. I was probably the first damp, dreary and chilly evening post the summer, so it doesn't maybe paint the exterior of the hotel in a good light. But I was there safely, but hungry after a long days work. The hotel appeared quiet during check in, which was swift and efficient. I obviously asked where I could get some food from and was disappointingly informed there was no Chef on this evening. Whilst I recognize there is a shortage of Chef's on hospitality at the moment, I would of hope the hotel would have highlighted this to guests prior to arrival / check in. I was alternatively handed a folder with takeaway menus from local pubs and eateries. What I did find though is that a large proportion either didn't open or serve food on a Tuesday. I did in the end, going to the local Tesco's. I'd booked a Business Premium Double Room and was allocated Room 23, which appeared to be a standard family room. The room was cold and had a musty smell coming from the bathroom. The condition of the furniture and bathroom fittings also appeared tired. In sum there was very little 'premium' seen within the room. I did try fiddling with the radiators and in room temperature control, but nothing happened. After grabbing my picnic style dinner, I did venture down to the bar to grab a drink. A pint of decent lager was £6, maybe a little pricy, but it tasted nice. Despite the chill, I slept ok and went down for breakfast. The service was sound and there was a selection of juices and cereals , in addition to a full English which tasted good. Check out was swift, although I wasn't asked how my stay was and hence the feedback via this medium. Maybe my visit was an exception, but would I stay or recommend this hotel again, No.
