If you come to Mashhad, are on budget, want to feel like home, want to experience the best Iranian hospitality, or on the way of getting your Turkmenistan visa sorted out...or have any other reasons to come to Mashhad, here is the place that you want to stay. It is a homestay that owned by Vali, a carpet merchant who knows his way thoroughly in the city, who is experienced in helping people sort out their Turkmenistan visa. I got the chance to stay with him and his wife and daughter for two nights. He showed me and other guests around the city, gave us a lot of tips about what’s going on in the city. And we got the chance to cook for each other (of course if you wish) so as to share different cultures. I stayed in the dormitory at the basement with bathroom next to it, the room is cozy and decorated with a lot of carpets. The location of the place is great too; walkable distance to the shrine, and it’s very close to bus and metro station. Shops at proximity. All in all I feel that I was so lucky to have met Vali and his family and to have the chance to stay at his place. Highly recommended :)

Vali was an excellent guide who would definitely go out of his way to help his guests out. I was looking for a table carpet and he drove me to different local shops around the city. His extensive knowledge about carpets and carpet repairing would be a big plus for those who want to know more about Persian carpets. Thanks Vali for giving me a great experience in Mashad!

Vali's Homestay was a fantastic place to start our two months in Iran, and was one of our favourite homestays in all of Iran. We highly recommend staying here. Clean, newly renovated bathrooms, with dorm and private room options. If you are an overlander, there is also room to park medium sized vehicles in the alley of the homestay. The family is lovely and Vali is a fantastic host, with a huge amount of knowledge on Mashhad and Iran. Vali is happy to answer all of your questions, and goes out of his way to introduce you to all of the quirks of Iran; exchange rates etc. Vali has an excellent sense of humour and fantastic stories! His wife cooks incredible dinners, definitely some of the best we tasted; I would love to buy a cookbook from her!! Vali went out of the way to organise a birthday celebration for us, which we truly appreciated, and it was such a lovely evening. They offer tours to local villages, you can buy quality saffron from their family farm, and if you are after an Iranian carpet/rug; Vali has excellent pieces and affordable prices. It was a very stress free experience, and not at all pushy.

Highly recommended! Especially his one-of-a-kind Turkmenistan visa service! Vali manages to cut through the Turkmen bureaucracy to make the complex and highly-rejected Turkmenistan visa application process into one which is reliable and stress-free. I sent him an email about a month before my journey to Turkmenistan, and after a few emails back and forth he submitted my paperwork for me - in about 2 weeks it was approved. All I needed to do was turn up at Mashhad the day before my departure to Turkmenistan to pick up my visa, accompanied by Vali. My time at the homestay was a similarly positive experience! Vali is a very warm and interesting person, and his house is beautiful and well-equipped for a comfortable stay (the bathrooms were recently renovated too!). All of my needs were catered for - the homestay provided home-cooked meals, information about sites in Mashhad, a shuttle to the border, and even lent me clothes for the mosque and embassy. I also went on a very rewarding tour of some surrounding small towns with his son Reza, who is really wonderful (and very happy to answer my never-ending questions about Iran)!
