Detailed Reviews
We took a family surf vacation to Las Flores, and were blown away by this gorgeous oasis tucked into a hillside in El Cuco. The rooms and bathrooms are luxurious, the grounds are amazing, the restaurant was delicious with authentic Salvadoran food, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the surf was epic for all skill levels. You will never forget the view from the yoga platform that juts out over the sea!

Really great place in remote area of El Salvador. Super relaxing, great access to a mostly private beach, fun surfing (and great surf coach), very good food and beautiful views. Everything you want in a beach vacation!

The PreCoVid hype around this resort was large. Fell quite short. Sanitizing protocols not apparent, food ok, pool dirty, towels(sandpaper), staff tried, management ABSENT, beach amazing. Maybe management will get the hint that they need to be involved in day to day operations.

I went to Las Flores on the reccomendation from a good friend and surfer. To start, we had already experienced crap service from non other than the owner himself via emails. This should have been a red herring right from the start. We arrived San Salvador and were picked up by their transport which by the way coast us 300.00 dollars US round trip!!! What a robbery. We made the journey from the airport to El Cuco (2.5 hours) and truth be told that part of the country is not where you want to be. Anyway we got to the hotel and it was a dump. Dirty, unkempt, litter all over the place and poorly staffed. We were given a room with a view that was impeded by the rooftop of the main building with a satellite dish on it. We asked if we could be moved to another room and were told "NO" right from the start because this was the one that was "programado", a word used often at Las Flores. Basically means "you get what you get so get over it". Now if the place had been full I would understand but get this, it was empty! We were the only ones there save the skeleton staff and the ill trained manager partner Rodrigo and yet they didn't want to let us move to a room with a better deal. My blood was starting to boil and it was only day one of a scheduled and reserved 5 day romantic getaway with my wife. The food was awful, excuse me (with capital letters) A W F U L!!! What made it even worse was the fact that dinner had to be decided by 12 PM and it was served at 7 pm sharp on your table whether you were there or not. I was getting dressed at 7:03 when the phone in the room rang to tell me that the meal was literally being set on the table!!! What the hell??? Did I mention that there was no Yoga instructor on premise as advertised, no surf instructor save an older, overweight and unfit and certainly not a surfer who came after we made a stink to just go out with my wife and show her the spots and she an intermediate surfer was a way more competant surfer than he. Problem was too that there were no waves. I am a world traveler. I have been doing 8-9 international trips per year for the last 20 years. Wednesday I leave for Brasil and I must say this was my worst experience ever. I checked out after a day and a half and luckily as always my wife was armed with her local book by Frommer's and we stumbled upon a great two places in El Salvador which I will be writing positive reviews about: Casa de Mar (awesome surf point) and La Cocotera both cheaper and both 1000 per cent better. Oh and by the way my r/t transportation by La Cocotera (2 1/4 hours from airport and back: 50.00 vs 300.00 for Las Flores. Note: i had to fight to not get charged the 3 nights i cancelled. Do yourselves a favor STAY AWAY!!!

For a surfer, any surf trip is ultimately determined either a success or failure based on the surf that was ridden while everything else tends to take a back seat. However, there are a few elements to Las Flores Resort that need more accurate clarification based on the average $ 400 /night room rate. First the site photos of this resort that you see before you really make this resort look much better than it does in person. The resort is showing age and is not as boutique like as it appears to be in the photos. Here are a few items that I think people should be aware of in no particular order:
1. We stayed in the older original building and the rooms were not that nice. Again, the photos really do a nice job making them look as though they belong at the $400 / night level. It just much cruder in person.. The single beds were horribly hard. Like plywood hard. No joke.
2. All the good review about the food.... No way.. There is only select off menu items that were good while the rest is basically disappointing and I'm not a foodie. I want to say that the food is not longer what it once was and they must have made some changes for the worst. For example, first night they cooked us lobster. Felt like they put it in the microwave as it was dry and overcooked. Even pancakes were bad which is really hard to do as they didn't know how to mix the badder. Ordered Gronola and fruit and got mounds of average fruit with a shot of watered down runny yogurt on the side. I get it, we are in El Salvador and access to good foods and produce are nonexistance. But then don't charge these kinds of rates. Everything has tons of sugar on it. The juice is all concentrate sugar water. Nothing freshly squeezed. Just cheap. We had to pick our own mangos off the trees in order to get good fruit. Coffee was really bad. Bring your own beans. It seems obvious to me that they have made some changes. Not all the meals were bad but it was a learning process to understand what was good and what was bad. Oh yea. Cheeseburger.... Had chopped bones in the meat.. Fish tacos literally was like eating cat food. Unfortunately, water is too warm for any fresh Tuna. Fresh fish consists only of Corbina...
Now the surf. Pay $450 for the week for boat access to wake up at 5 am and take a boat trip to surf Punta Mangos with 30 guys in the water and then watch it blow out at 9am everyday. I had a fun time and got lots of wave but had to get aggressive. I recall telling a friend by the last day that it started to feel like a job. A bit of an early morning grind out in the lineup. Basically, you are not alone in that many other surf resorts and low budget hostels exist in the area and are doing the same thing with boat trip to these resort. The idea of exclusivity and limiting lineup may have been accurately depicted and enforced at the conception of this resort ten years ago but is somewhat of a joke today. This is no Nihiwatu by any stretch. You have limited hours of actual surf in the morning and then the surf day is basically over. Unless there is a well defined swell ( 4-6 plus) Punta Mangos will be the ONLY surf spot while Las Flores will be mushy and without shape. There are no other spots in the area that will be breaking. The other spots mention on the site need serious ground swell to work.
Final note: There is absolutely nothing to do around the resort! El Salvador is quite void of these activities in addition to being unsafe to freely explore. It is in a way the antithesis to Costa Rica or Kauai in that it offers much less in all respects. No hiking, sight seeing, cultural events, When you arrive you get a sense that going off the compound is not a good idea for safety reasons nor is there anything you really want to see. With the surf blowing out everyday at 9am there is a tendency to be quite bored.

I have gone to Las Flores surf club several times, and the hotel and staff have been outstanding every time. whatever you need they will get it for you. The food is consistently good with a large variety of food on the menu. There are no yoga classes or kayaking as stated on the web site.
Unfortunately, word has gotten out. While the waves can and often are very good, the number of very aggressive surfers from Brazil makes surfing difficult. Both Las Flores point and Punta Mango generally have fewer than 25 very aggressive guys most of the day. We even tried going later in the season to get away from the crowds, but to no avail. The waves are fantastic, and you will get waves, but be prepared to get shoulder to shoulder with other surfers to get them. With several more resorts going up catering to surfers (one of which will be at Punta Mango) things wont get better. Great hotel, but the surf is anything but relaxing.

Response from RBarraza, Director General at Las Flores Resort
Responded Dec 29, 2011
Hello, We are sorry to hear you had a difficult time in the water since it was crowded in the lineup but we cannot control the access of surfers into the water. We do our best in service quality while at the resort in which we do offer Yoga lessons and Kayaking tours but the yoga is an instructor that comes from San Salvador so we only do prebooked sessions and the yoga is provided at Jiquilisco which is less than one hour from the resort. Again we apologize that the surf was not as empty as you expected but this is variable since sometimes we have really uncrowded top quality surf and sometimes like yours, we do get crowds at the lineup that make it really competitive. We hope that we did our part in delivering our best services and we can see you again in the future. Best regards from Las Flores Resort family.

Ok.....Here's the Good, the bad, and the ugly on Las Flores Surf Camp.
1. There is no ugly.
2. The bad.....nothing much to do here other than surf. No cool town close. You can take excursions like I did to Algeria...small volcano town high in mountains and shopped in San Miguel.
But really not much to do around here.
Alcohol.....I'm a non drinkers so this didn't affect me but the drinks are expensive here.....double Margarita $22. No outside alcohol is allowed so if you are a partier.....it will cost you. Internet service, cable TV, and electricity will go off several times a day. But it all gets back on within 5 minutes....so it's a minor annoyance.
3. The good.
Alot to say here.........
A. The food is awesome. BEST I HAVE EVER HAD ON A SURF TRIP.
B. Service is equally good here....Staff will know you by first name and use it from the moment you arrive.
C. English is a second language here....most of the staff can communicate but aren't extremely conversant.
D. Rooms are nice and new....I stayed in rooms 12 and 14....at the top of the hill. You have 88 stairs to climb to get these rooms so be prepared for a workout.Beds were comfortable. Maids cleaned room everyday. Water pressure in showers was awesome !
E. SURF....long right beach break. Fun. When it gets bigger current becomes and issue and I couldn't make it out twice to the line up and the hotel won't take a boat and drop you off out there. So if you are not a STRONG paddler you won't do well here when surf gets 8ft plus.
I wouldn't buy surf package up front. $75 a day for a boat trip to a break called Mangos.....of the 14 days I was here....I surfed everyday...and only went to Mangos 3 times. All the rest was right at the main break which is smack dab in front of hotel. It doesn't really barrel....it's a mushy wave with a steep face that you can really have fun working. The locals have it wired and on decent size days break does draw a 20 plus person crowd. Surf manners aren't really in existence...so you will jockey for takeoff and the best surfer will get the wave....be advised.
E. Spa service......was good. $50 a massage or you can buy a package they offer....go with the package it's a slightly better deal.
F. Cesar is main guy here...and the owner Rodrigo will pop in occassionally. Both are super nice guys and want you to really enjoy your stay and work hard to make that happen.
Side notes.......I was here 2 weeks. Had 3 big thunder and lighting storms which lasted a few hours each....all at night. Surf got big for 4 days then went smal....but even when small was fun. The air temp was upper 90s most days and water temp is around 88.....so stay hydrates. AC gave me a cold for a few days...going from really hot and sweaty to cold room....not too good for you.
As always ....I stand behind my reviews.

I asked about a place for couples that my wife would enjoy, while I was out surfing. I had 3 recommendations for Las Flores. The service was great, the accomodations very nice, the location is beautiful, and the food was very adequate. Whatever shortcomings one might encounter, the staff's willingness to please made up for it. All in all, we had a very nice trip. Surfed some of the best waves of my life. This is really not a place for beginners, but intermediate to advanced. Most spots, locals and visitors were very cordial, and I got plenty of waves. As in other locations, some traveling surfers from a country that adjoins Argentina don't feel like anyone else should get waves, but it worked out...

My husband and I just got back from a surf vacation at Las Flores Surf Club and we are still glowing. Every detail from the airport transfers, clean and comfortable rooms, excellent customer service, and delicious food was well considered and went smoothly. Our driver, Fernando, that brought us to and from the airport safely and efficiently was very courteous. The front desk was always very helpful and friendly. Our boat captains and guides, Mauricio and Antonio, did an excellent job. The restaurant staff was incredibly friendly and the food was always delicious and plentiful, we'll never be satisfied to eat at home again! Wilson, Daniel, Stanley, Rafael and the rest of the restaurant crew always made us feel welcome and at home. The piña coladas were so yummy! We enjoyed a couple Salvadorean cultural performances during our week stay which was a nice consideration. Security was ever-present but not intrusive.
Tip: You may consider bringing things for the kids on the beach that help with the boat launch and docking. They're a little wild and a couple get a bit aggressive, but all in all, they are a good bunch of rascals. They ask for things like wax, boardshorts, surf tees.
Another tip: Bring small bills and singles. I know the cost of the resort includes all gratuities but it does not include tips for extras like massages or the musical performances. By no means did we feel any pressure to tip, but we liked being able to give people a little something to show our appreciation.
Also, for the ladies or the beauty-conscious: the resort does not have hair conditioner in the suites! They provide soap and shampoo only. Bring your own conditioner! My hair got trashed with all the salt and sun, but it was well worth it.
We had a wonderful time and we're already planning our return... Thank you Las Flores!

Huntington Beach, California38 contributions26 helpful votesHas anyone flown out of SAL at 8:15am without staying the night by airport night before? Resort is saying earliest van time would be 5am but that doesn't seem to be enough time to make an international flight even if small airport?
My flight was at 8AM so the resort arranged for a 4AM pick up. It was no problem to get to the airport on time. The only thing I had an issue with this that at the airport, if you are going to the US, they make you go through security checks with metal detectors and full luggage screening twice so you really need to arrive a full hour before the plane boards.
It is for guest only. The hotel is "all inclusive"

The drive from the airport to the resort is a routine drive at highway speeds on excellent roads. Our shuttle drivers make this drive several times per day with resort guests. No, there have been no incidents. We have been making this drive for more than 10 years since the hotel has opened.
