We can’t say enough about Talamanca Nature Reserve. Friends had recommended it, but advised us to stay longer than the 3 nights that they did. Are we ever glad we did. It was one of the most relaxing and invigorating weeks we have spent in years. We are not veteran hikers, but were happy to exert and challenge ourselves on seemingly unlimited paths through tropical rainforest, gaining and losing hundreds of metres of elevation.
In between walks, hanging out at the restaurant meant non-stop bird activity in the garden, with exceptional service. Every staff member went out of their way to make sure we were looked after.
We stayed long enough (8 nights) to have a huge variety of hiking and walking experiences. By starting early several mornings, we got to enjoy the forest waking up. Over the week, we identified more than 50 bird species, most of them completely new to us.
We stayed 6 nights in the Mountain House, with a lot of space to spread out. The upside of this was that we were so much closer to some of the more spectacular scenery. The downside was that it’s 800 metres up a steep path from the restaurant. This generally worked well, although walking home after dinner was a slow process, not only because of the climb, but also because of the fascinating bugs to look at along the way.
For our last two nights, we stayed in a Garden cabin, not as deluxe, but easier at the end of the day.
An absolute must is a guided ATV tour up to the old forest, where the trees are whole ecosystems, epiphytes winding up and around, bromeliads perched on every branch. Truly breathtaking.
The many established tropical gardens offer real insight to all those North American houseplants: seeing them in their natural environment is jaw-droppingly beautiful.
Basic things: very fast internet, excellent coffee, all-day breakfast. Dinner specials included more food than we sometimes wanted, but soup and salad more than enough. Entire place is clean and comfortable. It’s the tropics, so up early, exercise, siesta, walk, dinner, early night. Repeat. Enjoy!

We stayed two nights in a riverside cabin. Room is a bit basic but comfortable extra pillows and hairdryer available if needed. It’s a 5 min walk down to the main reception and restaurant and you can hear the river all night so perhaps pick a garden cabin if heating running water makes you want the loo! Dinner was lovely and breakfast was cooked when you arrived. No choice on breakfast but scrambled eggs, fresh fruit and pancakes were very good. Guided walks are available but remember it’s all uphill but worth going on at least one. The gardens around the lodge are very nice and there is lots of birdlife by the main house. Staff very friendly and helpful

We spent 2 nights in a river cabin here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rooms are clean, the expansive grounds are well maintained, and the staff and service are outstanding. My boyfriend and I agreed that the food here was probably the best that we had on our whole trip (and we stayed at 5 different locations this trip). I also cannot say enough about the friendliness and helpfulness of the full staff. Several of the hiking trails were currently closed, so we mainly stuck to the River trail and the main ATV route out to the Old Forest. They offer walking sticks at the main building, which are a huge help for getting around, especially on the thinner, steeper trails. This is also just down the road, within easy walking distance, from the entrance to Chirripo National Park. They have a beautiful garden, just outside the restaurant, with hummingbird feeders and fruit feeders that draw in a wide variety of colorful birds including motmots, tanagers (speckled, silvery throated, blue-gray, scarlet rumped) spot-crown euphonia, Baltimore oriole, and violet saberwing. Be sure to try the frozen peppermint lemonades here – some of the biggest and best we have had in Costa Rica!

Our group of 8 recently enjoyed two nights at the Talamanca Nature Reserve. We were impressed with the friendly and professional service, beautiful bird garden outside the lodge, cleanliness and easy access to beautiful nature trails. Full meal service is available on premise, and was excellent. Our guided hike through the property was wonderful, allowing us to explore with confidence and visit the beautiful waterfalls. We appreciated the family roots that created this beautiful refuge; the ongoing operational role of family members gives the place a very authentic feel. This property is off the beaten path, so if you're looking to escape the crowds and explore the backroads of Costa Rica, put this on your list!

This place is located in a wonderful and less travelled region in Costa Rica. It is a short trip off the Interamerican highway on a good road to a secluded spot that is bursting with nature, tranquil and well maintained. After entering the gates to the reserve, you are greeted with beautiful gardens showing off many species of plants. Birds abound. The guava was ripe and falling from the trees and enjoyed many over our stay.

The rooms are located in either garden cottages or riverside cottages. We chose the river location and we lulled to sleep at night by the soft rush of water pouring out of the mountains above. This location means a 7 minute walk to the main lodge and restaurant over a small hill but is scenic before dinner but bring a flashlight for walk back after dinner. For us a perfect ending after a very fine meal in the restaurant.
Good selection of food, well prepared and first rate attentive service by staff. Our suggestion is to go early and sit in the rustic wood framed lodge and soak up some warmth from the fire in the wood stove as the mountain air cools off in the evenings.

We did 2 activities in our short stay. In the first afternoon we hiked up the main road inside the private reserve and explored many of the side trails. Great views over the valley and many plants and trees in gardens that were in a lovely setting. There were ponds with fish and other aquatics with well sited benches to rest and ponder nature. On the second morning, I was up at first light to explore a rougher trail up into the Bosque Viejo (old forest). Parts of this trail are challenging due to steep terrain and moisture as this is cloud forest. I walked for 3 hours entirely alone but for the many birds and occasional breeze. Rarely have I been in such a place of unspoiled beauty. My only regret was not staying longer at Talamanca Reserve. For the naturalist, I would recommend at least 3 nights and longer if you are a bird watcher or a budding Botanist!
Cannot recommend this place enough and at The top of my experiences in Costa Rica.

We spent 4 amazing days at the lodge and Ken, Gina, and Jeffery were friendly, helpful and always interested in making our stay perfect. The river cabin we stayed in was clean, comfortable and we had the sound of the river to lull us at night and could cool off during the day with a little dip.The grounds were amazing with 4000 acres to explore. We went birding on the property and saw over 50 birds along with a Quetzel! There are amazing waterfalls to hike to or just stroll through the gardens. A great place for a base camp for the Chirripo climb. We are going to bring our kids and spouses back next time. Worth a visit even if you are not going climb the mountain, just for the nature and scenery on the grounds

This is a beautiful relaxing place in a remote location. The lodge and reserve,a non profit making family business, is run by family members who couldn’t be nicer. They work hard and are always smiling, nothing is too much trouble. The food was great and a good price, the place is clean with tastefully decorated rooms. We stayed in the rooms slightly down the hill, only a short walk away but if you have mobility issues it might not be for you although staff are on hand to take you and your luggage up and down by buggy. Lots of lovely walks throughout with an abundant of wildlife. A pool or hot tub would be a great addition. We loved this place, one of the nicest during our whole trip around Costa Rica.

We loved Talamanca Nature Reserve! The property is fantastic and well cared for. The trails well maintained and the signs make it easy to find your way to the river, to the various waterfalls, to the gazebo, to the ancient forest and more. The riverside cabins were very clean and comfortable and we woke up to bird song every morning. The food is delicious and healthy. Plenty of great drinks, from margaritas and wine and beer to smoothies and lemonade. We hired Carlos to take us bird watching and saw many bird species right along the trails of the property. The best of our experience was the staff! Kenneth, Moises, Matteo, Nazareth, Anna, and all who work there are warm, knowledgeable, professional, accommodating, helpful, welcoming. We will return. My husband and friends and I highly recommend staying at this nature reserve and experiencing the cloud forest of Costa Rica! Plus the cute little town is walking distance and there is the Secret Garden you could also walk to. See all 10 photos below, all taken from the Talamanca Nature Reserve!

My husband and I decided to retreat to Talamanca Nature Reserve during our extended stay in the Dominical area. The Reserve was an easy one and one-half hour drive.
On arrival, we were greeted by Gina, a genuinely warm and friendly person. During our entire stay, Gina always wanted to make sure we were completely happy and satisfied with both our cabin and meals, and if we had any concerns.
We opted to stay in a River Cabin. The cabin was comfortable, spacious, and very clean. We especially enjoyed the cabin’s outside sitting area to relax after hiking, to bird watch, and to take in the beautiful garden area.
The food was fabulous with generous portions and it was some of the best we have had in Costa Rica. The menu has something to please anyone’s palate. We especially appreciated the food presentation, too!
It was a pleasure to eat on the restaurant’s veranda and enjoy the garden area with lots of different birds to enjoy.
I cannot begin to express how outstanding the staff, the service, and the entire reserve are. Talamanca Nature Reserve is a must stay for anyone traveling to Costa Rica!!

Our stay at Talamanca Nature Reserve was wonderful. The big attraction, of course, are the birds. The restaurant is set in a beautiful garden with banana and hummingbird feeders. You can sit and watch them while you eat. The food is very good and we felt it was reasonably priced. The expansive grounds are well-maintained. The four of us took a jeep tour that included a stop at a trail leading to 4 waterfalls. Our guide was very attentive as was the rest of the staff. We stayed in the Garden cabins, and enjoyed being close to the gardens. You can request a coffeemaker for your room. My husband felt that the bed was a bit hard, but that is our only negative comment. We would definitely return. This is a special place.

Is it true there is no coffee in the rooms? We are birders and need coffee as soon as we get out of bed.
Answer from Texasholdems

As I indicated in my original review, there is no coffee maker in the rooms at Talamanca. We did enjoy watching birds at their birdfeeders after ordering coffee at the restaurant, but I drink a lot of coffee, and ordering multiple $4 cups of coffee is not my preferred option either. Not having coffee maker in the room doesn't enable pre-dawn birding, so some solutions prior to restaurant opening are NoDoz caffeine pills or Starbucks instant coffee and a travel electric water kettle. Overall, Talamanca was fantastic, and worth the tough-to-drink-enough-coffee hassle. :)
