Luckily, we stayed here only one night! We looked for a hotel near the Cloudbridge Reserve and due to the fantastic reviews on Google and TripAdvisor we booked the Talamanca Nature Reserve. Right after the check-in we were charged almost 180 USD for one night in a garden cabin. They only post the prices without tax on their website: 150 USD for a garden cabin. As a tourist I do not care about the price without tax, I only care about the final price. But of course, this tactic gets them more clients. What did we get for 180 USD / night? Definitely not breakfast, because it was not included. We got a very basic and small cabin with two beds 140x200 cm, a toilet and a small shower. Our bed was uncomfortable, we needed to wait a long time until the water got hot in the bate and the shower was only slowly drizzling. Yes, you read it correctly, we paid for all that more than we did in the Hilton Gran Hotel in San José. And in the Gran Hotel we also had breakfast included. We were considering getting dinner at the hotel and took a look at the menu. One of the cheapest items was "chicken breast" which started at 25 USD. Of course, tax and the service tip is not included, so you would pay for chicken breast 31 USD. They also had fish and steak for much higher prices. Who do they think they are? A 3 star Michelin restaurant? Given the options, we went out to a restaurant 3 km down the road and paid 20 USD for two appetizers and two main dishes. The food was very good! Instead of investing in the cabins, they invested the money in fancy doors at the entrance. Nicely done! As a tip: You have a lot of hotels in the area which costs around 60 / night and offer you just about the same standards as the Talamanca Nature Reserve. This hotel is vastly overpriced and definitely not worth it. If they would have charged 50 USD / night, I would have given them three stars. But for 180 USD / night, it's more like zero stars on my behalf. If you want to do the hikes in the Cloudbridge Reserve or in the Chirrito National Park, it makes more sense to book something around Hotel Uran.

Response from Talamanca Reserve, Director General at Talamanca Nature Reserve
Responded Mar 21, 2022
Hi Christian, We sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I agree with your first paragraph, that we are given very good reviews by the majority of our clients, in fact, someone wrote that 5 stars were not enough; however, I can understand that it is not possible to cater all the tastes and budgets. About the price of the room. We sent you a confirmation form, prior to your arrival, with all the information, price plus taxes, how many beds and what kind of beds are in the cabins. You evidently were satisfied with the quotations we offered, so I don't understand your unhappiness now. By the way, as in other mis-statements, you did not list our correct room rates, and you said that your cabin had two twin beds, when in fact, it had one twin and one queen (and that queen had a new good quality mattress). Some of the extras included in our room rates are; the entrance to our 4.000 acres of private Nature Reserve, with miles of hiking trails, waterfalls, gardens, primary forest plus much more. The hotels you mentioned can not include most of these extras. It is a shame you didn't take time to enjoy the experience that many people are talking about. The photos you posted with the mess that you made, on purpose, in our cabin makes us wonder what your motive is. About our Restaurant, we do have a variety menu, and it is not true that the "cheaper option" start at $25.00. We offer several specials, and options, one is the chicken breast that you mentioned, however, you forgot to mention that the chicken breast has a shrimp sauce, served with soup, bread and two sides. If you had given yourself the opportunity to have a dinner and enjoy our service, I am sure that your opinion of Talamanca Reserve would have been very different. Sincerely, Direction department Talamanca Nature Reserve

I wish that there were more than 5 stars. The beauty is beyond words. We stayed there while I hiked Cerro Chirripo. There are many hiking trails just from the hotel. It was like something out of a fantasy. The rooms were extremely comfortable & quiet. I've never slept so well. The staff was the friendliest and most helpful than I've ever experienced. Talamanca Nature Reserve should be a must for anyone traveling to Costa Rica. Nothing else in the area comes close.

I'm writing this review because before our trip I found little online comparing Talamanca Nature Reserve (San Gerardo de Rivas) to Hotel Savegre (San Gerardo de Dota) as birding destinations and birding hotels. As background, my wife, 2 (college-aged) daughters and I spent 2-week birding in Costa Rica on our own (rental car and no guides), and we saw a total of 305 bird species. We had visited Hotel Savegra previously in 2008, but knew little about Talamanca Nature Reserve. After staying at both, we all agreed that Talamanca Nature Reserve was our favorite place to stay in Costa Rica, whereas Hotel Savegra was one of our least. Talamanca: • Beautiful (bird-filled) gardens around our room (cabin) and the restaurant. • The ability to see birds at the restaurant was delightful with several well-maintained hummingbird and banana feeders surrounded by natural features to enable great birding and bird photography. We saw 20 different birds while eating breakfast. • The staff was very attentive and accommodating. • The grounds of Talamanca were excellent with a variety of habitats. We walked 7 miles on their trails (on our own) and saw 65 bird species the first day (1/1/2022) • The road to Talamanca Nature Reserve (from San Isidro de El General) was similar (or better) versus the road to Hotel Savegra). The road between Talamanca Nature Reserve and the (excellent) Cloud Forest Reserve was pretty steep and rocky, but quite doable with our rented Toyota RAV4. Like Savegra, there were not many pull offs along the narrow road. • We also hiked ~8 miles at the nearby Cloud Forest Reserve. • Our only feedback to Talamanca was they should provide a coffee maker or hot pot on the room. $3/cup (no refill) x 4 people a couple times a day is not practical (or affordable). Savegra (pros): • The accommodations are comfortable, and the restaurant has good food, service, and ambience . • The flowers/plantings around the restaurant were beautiful. • The miles of hiking trails were convenient, and similar in scope to Talamanca. • We hiked the grounds and trails all morning (on our own) and saw ~30 bird species. Overall it seemed less "birdy" than Talamanca. Savegra (cons): Savegre seems to have forgotten their previous great hummingbird (natural) feeder setup. They now have a couple hummingbird feeders grouped together in 3-foot space between the road, lobby wall and loading ramp. You cannot take a picture without getting a poor background, and it's a fairly busy area with car and foot traffic. There were also a couple hummingbird feeders hanging from the roof rafters you could see while eating (good) breakfast, but there weren't many hummingbirds, and not set up for photography. It just didn't feel like Savegra was set up for birders anymore (and certainly not for bird photography). They seem to focus on Quetzal tours, but we weren't interested in spending the morning looking for 1 species. I will not be returning to Savegra now that I know I can see similar species (and more of them) at Talamanca.

Our group of 8 recently enjoyed two nights at the Talamanca Nature Reserve. We were impressed with the friendly and professional service, beautiful bird garden outside the lodge, cleanliness and easy access to beautiful nature trails. Full meal service is available on premise, and was excellent. Our guided hike through the property was wonderful, allowing us to explore with confidence and visit the beautiful waterfalls. We appreciated the family roots that created this beautiful refuge; the ongoing operational role of family members gives the place a very authentic feel. This property is off the beaten path, so if you're looking to escape the crowds and explore the backroads of Costa Rica, put this on your list!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Talamanca. Food was delicious, rooms were clean and spacious. The bird sanctuary was spectacular. Their spacious property was beautiful...Kevin is a wonderful tour guide. Kenneth was so helpful. Besides the wonderful hospitality, he assisted our group of eight when we realized last minute our Covid tests were expired. Above and beyond! Highly recommend!

We spent 4 amazing days at the lodge and Ken, Gina, and Jeffery were friendly, helpful and always interested in making our stay perfect. The river cabin we stayed in was clean, comfortable and we had the sound of the river to lull us at night and could cool off during the day with a little dip.The grounds were amazing with 4000 acres to explore. We went birding on the property and saw over 50 birds along with a Quetzel! There are amazing waterfalls to hike to or just stroll through the gardens. A great place for a base camp for the Chirripo climb. We are going to bring our kids and spouses back next time. Worth a visit even if you are not going climb the mountain, just for the nature and scenery on the grounds

My husband and I decided to retreat to Talamanca Nature Reserve during our extended stay in the Dominical area. The Reserve was an easy one and one-half hour drive. On arrival, we were greeted by Gina, a genuinely warm and friendly person. During our entire stay, Gina always wanted to make sure we were completely happy and satisfied with both our cabin and meals, and if we had any concerns. We opted to stay in a River Cabin. The cabin was comfortable, spacious, and very clean. We especially enjoyed the cabin’s outside sitting area to relax after hiking, to bird watch, and to take in the beautiful garden area. The food was fabulous with generous portions and it was some of the best we have had in Costa Rica. The menu has something to please anyone’s palate. We especially appreciated the food presentation, too! It was a pleasure to eat on the restaurant’s veranda and enjoy the garden area with lots of different birds to enjoy. I cannot begin to express how outstanding the staff, the service, and the entire reserve are. Talamanca Nature Reserve is a must stay for anyone traveling to Costa Rica!!

We spent 2 nights in a river cabin here and thoroughly enjoyed it. The rooms are clean, the expansive grounds are well maintained, and the staff and service are outstanding. My boyfriend and I agreed that the food here was probably the best that we had on our whole trip (and we stayed at 5 different locations this trip). I also cannot say enough about the friendliness and helpfulness of the full staff. Several of the hiking trails were currently closed, so we mainly stuck to the River trail and the main ATV route out to the Old Forest. They offer walking sticks at the main building, which are a huge help for getting around, especially on the thinner, steeper trails. This is also just down the road, within easy walking distance, from the entrance to Chirripo National Park. They have a beautiful garden, just outside the restaurant, with hummingbird feeders and fruit feeders that draw in a wide variety of colorful birds including motmots, tanagers (speckled, silvery throated, blue-gray, scarlet rumped) spot-crown euphonia, Baltimore oriole, and violet saberwing. Be sure to try the frozen peppermint lemonades here – some of the biggest and best we have had in Costa Rica!

This is a beautiful relaxing place in a remote location. The lodge and reserve,a non profit making family business, is run by family members who couldn’t be nicer. They work hard and are always smiling, nothing is too much trouble. The food was great and a good price, the place is clean with tastefully decorated rooms. We stayed in the rooms slightly down the hill, only a short walk away but if you have mobility issues it might not be for you although staff are on hand to take you and your luggage up and down by buggy. Lots of lovely walks throughout with an abundant of wildlife. A pool or hot tub would be a great addition. We loved this place, one of the nicest during our whole trip around Costa Rica.

The trails are amazing, the staff are so kind and hospitable, the food is absolutely delicious. The mountain water is so fresh and clean - best I've ever tasted! We stayed in a Garden Cabin, and loved it. They are a little older, but spotlessly clean and so well maintained. It's quite impressive the amenities that you have at hand in this remote mountain location. Discover the town if you have time, there's lots to see and do....just be ready to hike like a champ - the inclines are a great workout!
