Detailed Reviews
What an amazing piece of heaven both Karen and Glen have created on Ouleva. They are amazing hosts who have adapted to the elements and island life way of living. Nothing was a problem for them and made our stay stress free, outstanding couple.
The fales were clean, spacious with their own ensuites. The beds were comfortable and close to the ocean to hear the waves made for a relaxed sleep. Each fale views the ocean and we would occasionally see whales breaching or mother and calf close by along with night-time sky's were an added bonus.
The meals were superb and was a regular talking point ( thank you karen) in a relaxed communal setting.
The relaxed tuition from Glen for paddle boarding (no wind for kitesurfing unfortunately) had everyone upright in a short time and enjoying themselves topped off a wonderful 4 days. Great for singles, couples.and families. Will definitely visit again... to learn how to kitesurf...with the group again.
Thank you both and much 🙌

Kitesurf Tonga is the whole package from warm tropical waters and safe location to learn to kitesurf, to handmade fales on the beach, a reef to snorkel and brilliant food. Glenn is a great teacher and Karen a welcoming hostess. We enjoyed the location with beaches to ourselves and the unique accommodation with warm showers. Access to the lagoon for kitesurfing was easy and when the wind was up , we spent the whole day out there. The staff and other guests were lovely company too. Recommend the experience!

Hello, my holiday at Fanifo Lofa Kitesurf Tonga was the best. The staff were fabulous, the whale swimming out of this world and very professionally done. Karen, Glen and Kasper were wonderful on the boat and in the water. I felt very safe on the boat, and like how professional they were with the whales in keeping about 50 - 100 metres away from them, and only the swimmers getting closer. Karen always on the look out for us and helping me ( not confident) in the water with mask and I was overjoyed to have the baby whales swimming towards us for a closer look. How amazing. The other people on the trip only 8 of us on the boat, at a time and only four in the water with a guide at all times. Very professional and I highly recommend this stay. The snorkling and swimming was also great.

Tonga has its own unique rustic appeal. Karen and Glen provide a great place to stay and experience a special part of Tonga and the pacific islands. The fale and food were very good as far as one gets when staying in Tonga. They are excellent hosts and I would certainly enjoy the chance to stay again at Kitesurf and Whale Discovery. The whale experiences were the best that I have had after three trips to each of the three island groups.

From start to finish, the whole experience was exceptionally fantastic. Karen and Glen were the BEST Hosts, so caring, humorous, knowledgable and just lovely yet professional.
Food was amazing, accommodation was awesome with the most comfortable bed, and sustainable given it's on a remote island. Great use of natural resources and they truly care about the environment and Tonga.
Speaking of which, if you want an escape from a busy lifestyle yet still have comfort and be sure to have a great time with many fun activities, i would wholeheartedly recommend this place.
Definitely a Paradise on its own. Thanks so much Karen & Duncan and staff. We had the best of times and we will surely be back.

We stayed at Fanifo Lofa in October 2017 for 8 days, We took our 7 year old son with us and he really enjoyed the Island, we all did! There was not as much wind as Andy had hoped for but had taken 3 kites and managed to get out on the 17M most days. The fales are our idea of perfect accommodation, brilliantly built and decorated by Glen and Karen, simple, comfortable, designed for the climate, just lovely. Liked the huge efforts they have gone to to be environmentally friendly, use of local materials, solar water heating and power etc. The food in 2017 was an unexpected treat and highlight with Jeremy producing beautiful restaurant quality meals often from local ingredients, and love the home baked bread every day. We went whale watching twice, both days quite different and amazing swims to view whales both times. Was impressed with the respectful approach the outfit Karen had booked us on took with the whales. The whale watch also stopped at fantastic reef in middle of nowhere for snorkelling. Snorkelling on Uoleva was great, we liked visiting the home reef with resident Turtle often there, it is just off the resort and cool to see the same reef fish going about their business every day. We also really liked the snorkelling out towards windward reef from the point where the Kites launch, shallow white sand with colourful bommies and loads of fish. The whole Island is really low key, unspoilt and lovely. 7 year old son rates it as best holiday spot ever. We would love to go again. Thanks Karen and Glen for creating this oasis.

Traveling to Fanifo Lofa you think you are heading somewhere that bit special. During the flight from Nuku'alofa to Lifuka it's hard not to be blown away by the beauty of the turquoise sea interrupted by deserted islands and reefs. Once you disembark the plane and board the boat for the final 20 minutes of your journey, you no longer think but know you are heading somewhere special.
If you can imagine palm fringed beaches, deep contrasting blues as the reefs pass beneath you, the sound of the sea crashing on the shore as you sleep and the cooling breeze passing through your fales, you may have some idea of Fanifo Lofa.
A labour of love built from the ground up by the owners and hosts, Glen and Karen. Situated on the western side of Uoleva, the resort consists of 5 fales, beautifully hand built and within view and earshot of the ocean. The detailing could not be better, hand planked coconut trees line the bedroom with discreet lighting provided by solar power.
Each fale is en-suite, and the bathrooms are lined with traditional Tongan hand woven coconut fronds. Hot water is supplied through solar heating.
There is also a communal fale which acts as the social hub of the resort, where both excellent meals are served and cool beers are available.
The main reason for visiting for most would be to kitesurf the 6km long lagoon serviced by the easterly trade winds providing what could only be described as a world class spot. The winds were a little fluky on our visit, but we still managed most days out on the water and busy days meant five people to share the water with.
For those who don't kite there is still plenty to keep you occupied, from SUPs with some nice easy waves to catch, wondering round the island, snorkelling trips to some amazing reefs, whale watching or just laying back in a hammock with a book.
In the review writing tips from trip advisor they ask that you say what you liked best, which is easy as the Karen and Glen have built such a fantastic relaxing destination for both kite surf enthusiasts and those just looking for a 21st century escape, and what you like least. The only thing I could think of was having to leave.

My daughter and I visited Fanifo Lofa Resort for a short three days before our family reunion on Tongatapu and were very impressed. Fanifo Lofa deserves the highest possible accolades on every level, as do the hosts :-)
Firstly, the location. Uoleva Island is incredibly beautiful.. If all you wanted to do was look out at the view from the verandah of your fale, you would get your money's worth on the first day! The snorkelling is also fantastic, as is the stand up paddle boarding. For kitesurfers this place is paradise - long stretches of water, a reef break, constant wind, and nobody to share it with..
Secondly, the Resort. The fales are gorgeous - a simple design that fits in perfectly with the surroundings. The beds are super comfortable (I would recommend taking your own pillow though), the water is hot, there is a solar charger for USB ports, and the bathroom is clean and practical (top marks to Karen for the added rustic charm!). It was interesting to know that every coconut tree chopped down to make space for the resort was used for building and furniture. It was also interesting to hear about Glen's research when deciding on grey and blackwater waste systems which were truly eco-friendly, practical and guest-friendly. Being from the islands and promoting responsible, sustainable development I appreciate the effort they went to to provide this for the guests and for the environment.
Thirdly, the kitesurfing experience. I am a beginner and this place was perfect for me to learn. Glen was moving pretty fast through the water and doing some fancy aerials so clearly it is also the perfect place for experts! And Glen has to be the best kite instructor in the world - knowledgeable, patient, good humoured, encouraging, kind - ten out of ten!
Fourthly, Team Glen & Karen. Delightful, warm, genuinely nice people, plus Karen is a great cook and makes amazing bread! Wonderful couple, wonderful hosts..
Lastly, value for money. We would come back in a heartbeat.
Glen & Karen, congratulations on making your dream a reality, you deserve every success. We had a fantastic time, malo 'aupito..

Hi,
I have been there during the winter season, which means also the windy season..... and it was huge ! 23 degres day and night, 15 to 20 knots 6 days per week and always sunny !
The accomodation is super nice, exactly what you expect when coming in Tonga, not to fancy, but still super comfy and definitly away from society , feeling like being back the source !
Hot shower, huge bathroom, partly open sky.
super calm, very nice looking decoration.
fair kitchen for cooking (they can provide you breakfast/lunch/dinner)
kitesurfing part; (because that's why we go there....)
biggest rideabble laggon ever seen
shallow and flat water, but also massive waves.
Glen and Karen, the two adorable owners provide their knowledge about the sport but most of all about the spot and everydays conditions which is really helpful to know where/what to do.
They also provide lazy transport to point of the island by quad or boat.
And of course they always keep an eye on you to be ready to on the boat and rescue ! ...... which i appreciate as i quite often get in trouble with my fifth line :(
They make excursions if asked the surround best islands spots..... worth it !
There is only 7 inhabitants on this island, so don't expect having insane parties at night, but they do have a bar right on the beach and sell beers and spirits probably if you want to spend a nice time with your friends watching the sunset.
I reckon it's time to rush on it as it might not be so cheap anymore in a couple of years when the spot will be well known.
I hardly recommend this place. ;)
