We stayed with sonny earlier this year, after being told by everyone to go tiannas (tho tiannas looks like a waste heap in comparison). Having seen both we were not in the slightest disappointed, captain cooks and sonnys was amazing. Uoleva itself is really beautiful, sonny has been here, along time, he talked lots about the islands, had loads of stories... More

It is certainly not a place for everyone, and you have to be open enough to appreciate plenty, but if you can overlook the absence of every comfort you will live a wonderful experience. The place is amazing and unspoiled, beautiful beach and sand, the bungalows are built just in front of the sea for a spectacular view. The owner,... More

I currently live in Nuku'alofa, Tonga and decided to take a break and spend a week in Uoleva with a bunch of friends. Uoleva is about 15mins boat ride from the main island of Lifuka in Ha'apai and is a private paradise (depending on when you go). Captain Cook's fales are simple and basic but are right on the beach... More

I went to Captain Cook's Hideaway on whim to meet some friends who were staying on Uoleva Island. I loved it. Yes its essentially camping in a wood hut, but there is no other people around, the beach is PERFECT and the reef is just there. If you are up for lying around in hammock, not showering other than to... More

We just came back from Uoleva Island and have been at Captain Cook's Hideaway for 6 nights (45 TP per fale, per night). It was a really nice and relaxing stay on this lonely island surrounded by crystal clear water and reef. Our fale had a double bed and a little veranda in the front situated right next to the... Have just read some reviews of Captain Cooks and can pretty much understand where each person is coming from, and can see that it can be a bit hit and miss depending on the weather, who else is staying there, and what each person's approach is to what can only be described as some pretty basic accomodation. I would actually... More

HI, we spent at Captain Cook one week and it was one of the best of our lives! We were looking for quite, peaceful, beautiful paradise and we found it there. We paid 45top/night in hut, 10top/pp for breakfast and 20top/pp for diner. Every diner was real feast for us. The owner Sonny was really kind to us. We also... More

The friendly folks at the local cafe and at the visitors bureau were trying to give us hints that this was not a good destination for us. We spent two miserable days too cold to swim and no hot water or (real) tea to warm us up. We resorted to using the kerosene lamp to heat the rainwater for a... More

Bring everything - including a bed, flashlight, screen for the windows, sheets, pillow cases, lysol, broom, lock for the door, camping cooking items, towels, dishes, cups, lantern, ear plugs because of the dogs barking, pigs running around and rosters start crocking about 3 am in the morning! 50.00P per day to stay (a lot of books told us 25.00P per... Stayed here for 2 nights and were so pleased we made the effort to get to Uoleva Island. We arranged it whilst on Lifuka Island with the great folk at Mariners Cafe and the owner of Captain Cook arranged our transfers to and from the resort. Accommodation is a basic but comfortable hut right on the beach looking out over... More
