I have been there 5 years ago (below I wrote 2019 as there was no chance to express another option). I spent some days in the middle of alaskan nature: foxes, deers, eagles, otters and, of course, bears. I recommend eveyone to deal a trip to Fraser river: it's a must. There I spent three unforgettable hours surrounded by fishing bears and cubs,

80 bear sightings in three days! Some were very close. The highlight of our trip was seeing a mother bear with two small cubs frolicking on the beach and seeing a huge boar being chased away by a sow protecting her three young. We spent two of the days we were on the trip fishing at the Karluk outlet. My friend and I caught 3 to 4 steelhead every day- two were around 30 inches. We also caught dozens of rainbows and countless dollies. There was a huge fire pit that was lit every night. One night, we watched as two male deer locked horns 20 feet from us! KBBC has the best facilities we have ever experienced. The cabins and new gathering room were beautiful. Our cabin was super private. We had jaw-dropping panoramic views of Karluk Lake and the surrounding mountains from our cabin and it was well-appointed with a coffee pot, good WiFi, etc. We watched countless bears walk along the banks of the Karluk Lake from the spotting scope in the gathering room. Our bear guides were informative and friendly and answered all of our questions. We really enjoyed the cook Wanda and the facility guy Frank. They were kind and attentive while still giving us privacy and the space we needed to just enjoy the peaceful setting. My wife and I will definitely go back to the KBBC!

Between the amazing bears and attentive staff, I can't imagine having a more exceptional experience! It's been a couple of weeks now and I am still reveling in the experience that was hands down one of the best of my life! From the air service crew and pilot to the five staff who took such wonderful care of my travel companion and me, it was PERFECT! AND THE BEARS! Words cannot express how delighted I was to sit and watch these majestic creatures for hours! It could not have been a more perfect experience!

While the area was beautiful, and the cabins were comfortable, we were disappointed on every front. Definitely NOT a good value. Bears were scarce; staff was nice but not particularly service oriented; food was okay. One guide (Vic) was a wealth of information (and the only one truly interested in spotting bears), but he was there for only one day. Further affecting our trip was a two-day weather delay. Two of the five nights we paid for never happened. Because of potential weather issues, we bought travel insurance as recommended by the Center and our travel agent (in fact the travel agent sold us the policy). The implication was that should weather affect our ability to get there, the travel insurance would cover the lost days. NOT SO! As if it wasn't bad enough that thousands of dollars were spent for an experience we didn't get, the cavalier attitude of the staff was infuriating. Finally, they arranged for 90 minutes of bear viewing on the Katmai Coast. We greatly appreciated that, but it was too little, too late. If you're thinking of spending a pant-load of money to go to this Center, reconsider. There are other ways to see bears in Alaska. Our 90 minutes of bear viewing on the Coast was far better and far cheaper, and if you pay for the trip but they can't deliver due to weather, you get a full refund. In other words, you pay for what you get. At the Brown Bear Center, you just pay.

Thank you for sharing your experience. At the KBBC we pride ourselves on going above and beyond to make an exceptional experience for our guests. We are always disappointed when the experience falls short for any reason, whether it is related to weather, wildlife, or a service that we could have provided better. Your feedback helps us identify where we have opportunities for improvement. Weather in remote rural Alaska can be unpredictable, and we are always disheartened when our guests’ trips are disrupted by bad weather. We are sorry to hear that the third-party organization that sold you your trip insurance misinformed you about what it covered. Again, we are sorry this happened. We wish you the very best during your future bear viewing adventures and hope that they meet your expectations.

KBBC is a top notch lodge in central-west Kodiak island located on an island within Lake Karluk. The region is famous for the high density of kodiak bears that congregate to feed on spawning salmon. People come to Kodiak for the bears, and I saw many bears, but it didn't take long before I realized it was the staff who work at the lodge who made the experience unforgettable. Food was thoughtful amd always good. The rooms were luxurious. Other than viewing bears, the region is beautiful and offers other activities including fishing and kayaking. Bear viewing, like all wildlife is never a guarantee, but efforts were made so I could have the best experience. We saw a lot of bears and I was able to take some amazing photos. I will always be greatful. Thanks to Vic, Jake, Dylan, and Frank. Hugs to the best cooks in Kodiak.
