This was exactly what we wanted for our trip to Belize! The owners made us feel so welcomed from the start to the end of our stay. We felt like they welcomed us into their family. They taught us the names of the tropical birds flying around the property, toured us through their edible plants, and gave us tips for where to go for great adventures in the surrounding areas, and then set us up with an amazing tour guide for ATM cave. The property is secluded and beautiful and private. The breakfast included fresh, tropical fruits from the local market and banana bread made on the property. We also decided to eat dinner at the property, and ate two yummy, authentic Belizean dinners complete with homemade desserts made using ingredients from the property, and the hosts were super flexible on timing and food requests. Please keep in mind: if you are looking for a hotel stay like in the US, this is not the place for you. If you are looking for an unforgettable jungle stay, come here!…
We had an amazing 3 days at the Gumbo Limbo Resort. The new owners, Christine and Jay were gracious, along with their staff. The cabanas and pool were clean, the food was great and the grounds were peaceful and beautiful. We highly recommend a visit here!
Our third visit to San Ignacio came without any plans and we decided to stop in and have a look at the Gumbo Limbo. So glad we did as this is now perhaps our go-to jungle lodge in San Ignacio. It's a short drive from everything San Ignacio has to offer and its location puts it on the edge of the jungle. We were covered up with Toucans, MotMots, Parrots of all sizes, Paraques, and more. Although this area can get quite warm during the day, their pool offered a lovely place to cool off and the jungle doesn't retain heat like the city does. By 7:30 or so it's down to the low 70s. The continental breakfast with fresh fruit and a gleaming silver French press was too cool and the conversation with Stephen and Michael was quite entertaining. We love this place.
Really loved our weekend here! A friend and i needed a getaway after being cooped up for a year and this place delivered: pool, bar, quiet, mountains, sunshine, spacious and comfortable rooms, and an outstanding coffee/tea service. We spent time with friends nearby and explored nearby San Ignacio. So much to do, but it was just a weekend and relaxing was number one on the list. The hosts, Steve and Mike, are absolutely skilled in their craft and make you feel welcome and accommodated. I could not imagine staying anywhere else in Cayo. Note: The roads are great right up to the drive onto the property; for the 1/4 mile private drive, you'll want a 4-wheel drive and dry conditions. If you don't make it, your hosts will rescue you.
Gumbo Limbo was really a dream come true for our family of 5 on our trip last spring (literally just as COVID was hitting). From the time of planning our trip Steve and Mike were so helpful helping us arrange transportation from the airport with a stop at the zoo en route right to the lodge to assisting with some itinerary changes while staying there due to the COVID outbreak. They work closely with Belize Nature Travel who I also highly recommend. Absolutely perfect side trips that included cave tubing, ziplining, ATM cave (a MUST DO), Caracol Mayan ruins and swimming pools. All transportation and guides were excellent. As for the lodge itself it was just beautiful. We had a bungalow perfect for 5 with 3 beds, beautiful patio with hammock, excellent bath/shower, wifi at the main building. The pool was gorgeous and just what was needed after a day of hiking. Views spectacular and waking each morning to the sounds of the jungle waking up all around was indescribable. The lovely breakfast each morning with fresh local fruit, French pressed coffee and again those open air views was amazing. Each night a full 3 course meal tailored to include our vegetarian daughter and wine/beer/ or cocktails of choice made for the perfect end to each evening. And despite the stress of the worldwide pandemic taking off and greatly affecting the owners future reservations they remained very attentive and accommodating to us and helping us with our own itinerary changes. We wish them every success and hope to return again one day! We will definitely refer anyone we know interested in beautiful Belize to this resort!!!…
Just returned from Belize and spent four nights here. The place was perfect for us (two adults, three kids 8,6,and 3). The location allows you to not be to far from anything in the Cayo district (ruins, river activities, horse rides, ziplines, San Ignacio) but also has a "remote" feeling far away from the city lights and larger resorts. Food was very good and priced reasonably. Same with the bar. We really enjoyed conversing away the after dinner hours with Mike and Steve learning about their property and sharing stories. The pool was great and is perfect for a cool off in the afternoon. We did Xunantunich, the Iguana Sanctuary, Rio on Pools, horse riding @ MET, zipline @ Calico Jacks, and some San Ignacio shopping while staying here. If your looking for a large social night spot this isn't your place. If you appreciate nature, waking up to the sounds of birds, and a have a sense of adventure this is a place for you!…
My husband and three teens ages 19,17 and 13 stayed at Gumbo Limbo for 3 nights. Our bungalow was comfortable with plenty of room for the five of us to spread out. Two big ceiling fans kept us cool and the beds were comfortable so sleep was good. The dining area/bar is spacious with a wide open beautiful view. A great place to sit any time of the day. Mike and his son Steve were very welcoming and interesting to talk to. The beer was cold and very reasonably priced! Our dinners of ribeye and fish were very tasty and also priced reasonably. Our teenage son is a big eater, he could’ve eaten two dinners. Belizean portions are considerably smaller than USA portions. The grounds are clean and beautiful with many trees and plants. The pool looked nice but we didn’t have time to swim. I highly recommend staying at Gumbo Limbo!…
This place was MORE than needed after a few days spent in San Pedro. If you’re looking for a place that’s off the beaten path and completely immersed in the outdoors, THIS IS IT. Mike and his son Steve, were AWESOME! You won’t find finer men. Their level of hospitality is ON POINT!! The “casitas”, as I called them, were great, and definitely brought that nature feel. The pool was amazing to cool off in after a day at Caracol or the ATM. The meals here are on out and VERY filling. All I can say is, is THIS IS THE PLACE TO STAY. Thank you Mike and Steve for everything!!
This was an amazing place to stay and made you feel you were in the middle of the jungle. Really liked the fact they were trying to be Eco friendly by harvesting rain water and generating their own power. It was ideally located for local attractions and day trips which Steve and Mike (owners) were happy to help book or give directions to. The rooms were spacious and comfortable and the restaurant/bar area was a great place to relax as the kids played in the pool. Steve and Mike were great hosts and lovely people to spend time chatting with. Food and drink was good and they were happy to accommodate our picky eaters, they also made a good cup of tea! All round 5* experience. Will be visiting again hopefully!
We had a wonderful stay at Gumbo Limbo and the hosts make the trip. From the moment we got there Steve and Mike made our trip fun and memorable. The location: Convenient to San Ignacio and local sites, it is beautifully placed on top of a hill that allows for nice nightly breezes. This is essential at the moment as there was no AC in our unit. They were in the process of equipping all of their units with AC so that will be a huge bonus for those of us not used to that kind of heat and will definitely make me stop back if we return. They do have one unit currently AC equipped if your a couple. Our unit was beautiful with floor to ceiling windows that all opened. Bathroom and shower were spacious and grounds were immaculate. The bar/restaurant area is a dream come true. We had breakfast of fruits, cereal, coffee (Amazing french press coffee) and the best banana bread I've ever eaten. Some homemade and local jams were incredible too. We also had dinner 2 nights and both were outstanding local foods. Their chefs are keepers! Yum! and very reasonably priced. I cannot finish a review here without mentioning the hosts again. Steve and Mike are England transplants and have the humor and hospitality you would expect. Honestly, I could have sat there and talked to them for hours. They even gave a hand with a flat tire on my rental. The pool area was also very relaxing! The trip up to this resort is an adventure! Roads off the highway in Belize are not for the faint of heart! I would recommend an AWD or 4WD vehicle with some clearance for most travels in Belize you are planning off the highway.…
