This resort is about a 30 min drive from Belize City. We were welcomed right away and taken to our rooms. There are many different villas in this resort. Our room was very large, had air conditioning and was quite comfortable. The bathroom was large and the shower was quite good as well.
There is a pool, with a bar located right beside it and the dining room was on the other side of the pool.
The staff was excellent and very friendly. The manager took pains to make sure that the staff would make our stay as pleasant as possible.
Breakfast was good, and it probably was the best breakfast that we had during our stay in Belize. There is wildlife, with Howler Monkeys, iguanas, and a large variety of birds living in and around the resort. We also saw a crocodile swimming down the river. We would suggest that when leaving Belize, you also stay at the resort while waiting for your next day flight out. We would not recommend that you stay in Belize City. The resort can arrange shuttle service to the airport. All in all a great stay and highly recommended. The only suggestion we have, is that we would have liked to be able to have access to a nature walk. We did go down river on a tour to a Mayan Ruin and saw much wildlife along the way.

Located in Burrell Boom just outside of Belize City. Lovely grounds along a river, with hanging hammocks and small pool. Nice little restaurant overlooking the river. Food in restaurant is tasty local specialties.
What is outstanding is the helpful and kind staff. The Manager, Beverly was most helpful and friendly. She did daily tour of property and checked with guests to ensure everyone was happy and well cared for. Needed extra key for room upon checking in, when sharing room, she sent driver out to have one made the same day. Staff provided extra towels when asked and brought hairdryer. Lovely rooms. While some things could use a bit of TLC, the accommodation was tasteful and very enjoyable. Also pickup and drop-off at airport was done by hotel and very convenient. Stayed here once with room mate and then solo before leaving Belize.

Last night in Belize and found this GEM, regretted not finding it earlier as we would definitely have started our 9 day stay at this resort FIRST!
Besides being conveniently located 20 min from the airport, it's also centrally located to excursions for Caves, Ziplining, Baboon Refuge, ferry terminal, etc.
The grounds are lush and well-kept. Beautiful flowers line the walk ways. And there are sounds of assorted birds and even calls from Howler monkeys! My husband even got pictures of them in a nearby tree.
It sets along the Belizean River, so there's a dock where complimentary canoes allow for more adventures.
The pool is quite inviting along with the colorful hammocks.
You can smell the delicious food from the restaurant while sitting on your porch, which made it easy to know it was time to eat.
Best part was our private porch and beautifully carved front door that opened up into a spacious king sized bed uniquely designed with dark wood branches. And the bathroom did not disappoint either, with a roomy step in tiled shower along with a unique tiled sink. Oh, and the towels were so soft and lush, too!
Shout out to Braxton, who greeted us with complimentary Rum Punch and offered such great service. Also, we appreciated the genuine friendliness of Beverly and our server Charmaine...such great assets to Black Orchid.
Can't wait to tell more of my family and friends about this resort and we definitely will be back!!

Traveled for vacation and a wedding checked in 12/27/19 a little after 4pm belize time room was not ready was directed to bar for free Rum punch loved it but 1.5 hrs later room still not ready so drank another Rum punch, by the way check-in is 2pm, so receptionist comes pool side and speaks with another guest for a bout 15 mins, so I scope out that she has a key in her hand I'm praying its mine, so I walk out of the bar to the pool she sees me and state give me a minute, I just need to speak with another guest then I'll take you to your suite she shows me the key and I'm thinking to myself is she for real its been 2 hrs and I have to wait until you speak with another guest who is relaxing seriously, so I wait as I have no choice, she takes me to the room does not show me how to work anything nor give any details on the resort, there is no booklet with info in the room, great room by the way very spacious, however no dead bolt on door got a little scary when other guest got drunk and tried their key in my door, the view is relaxing and picturesque but the customer service sucked. So no way to call room service as I have no number I go to front desk she states " you could just pick up phone and dial 100) how would I the guest who was not notified of this know, asked for info numbers she told she does not have any written down, nor did she attempt to. So I decide to go on river cruise next day asked cost then told oh the boat is out of service, did not offer any alternative, nor inform me canoes could be used by experienced guest at no charge.
Housekeeping, Dryane who I emailed to plan my trip, wait staff and cooks were friendly and very cordial and even Beverly the general manager stopped by to check on the single guest. Very relaxing but very bad customer service from check in staff. Food was very boring and expensive.
I used their free drop off to the airport and driver was cordial.
It was relaxing location but could use update throughout. It was a great location for an island wedding.

We enjoyed the location of the Black Orchid adjacent to the Belize river and enjoyed a canoe paddle in the late afternoon. Howler monkeys were on the roof and in the trees. The room was spacious but frumpy. There was a safe in the closet but no instructions. No deadbolt on the room door. We found the restaurant to be pricey (2 lunches $50 US!) and mediocre.

We stayed at the Black Orchid as part of our G Adventures tour. From the time we checked in with our complimentary run punch, the manager and staff went out of their way to ensure our needs were met. On very short notice, they arranged an excursion to the Belize Zoo. Our driver, a member of the resort staff, also acted as our very knowledgeable guide. Many other excursions were offered as well. The all inclusive breakfast offered fruit, eggs and bacon, various delicious pastries and the ever popular fry jacks. The grounds with all the tropical plants were immaculate, and a pleasure to wander around in. An extra tip of the hat to the manager for going out of her way to make our stay a pleasant one. We would recommend this little gem of a resort.

This our 10th time staying at Black Orchid and we love it!! Beverly and her staff have treated us and our friends great every time we have been there! She always adds a little personal touch to let us know how much she appreciates our staying there. This year she had balloons put in our room, up on the top of the bed, just to say "happy to see you again and thanks for coming back!
This year we had three other couples with us. We like to stay there when we first get to Belize because they pick us up at the airport and take us right to the property and make it so nice to be back. We also stay at the end of our trip to unwind and just relax after a week of diving at Off the Wall. We will go back and our friends are always impressed with the way we all are treated. Great place!!

We stayed two nights at Black Orchid after spending several days elsewhere in the country. The hotel grounds are very pretty. The room we stayed in was really spacious with tons of storage. Many drawers, large closet. AC worked well. We had a good coffee maker in the room and a fridge. The hotel is located fairly close to the international airport so that's really convenient. Its also in a convenient location for driving to Altun Ha and the Community Baboon Sanctuary and the Nature Resort for river tours. (these are things we did while staying here). There is also a really nice "Mexican" restaurant right next door.

The coolest thing at this hotel for us was the wildlife. You wake up to so many bird sounds! On the second morning the howler monkeys actually woke us up. Right on the property we saw the monkeys, large iguana, basilisk lizard, and So Many Birds. At night the frogs are singing loudly. There is a 3rd floor deck for great viewing into the trees to see some of the wildlife from a different angle.

The restaurant seemed slightly pricey and kind of slow service for good but not amazing food compared with other restaurants we visited in country. But the options in Burrell Boom are limited.

We did not use the pool but it did look inviting. We also never turned on the TV so I can't speak to that.

Negatives for us:
The bed was not comfortable. It wasn't so bad that I couldn't sleep, but there were permanent impressions where others had slept.
The first 24 hours we were there the internet was out. It's entirely possible this was outside of the hotel's control.
Mosquitoes! Again not the hotels fault. But be prepared if you visit this place on the river in the rainy season.
Our room had no safe.

There was a hotel dog that trotted around like he was patrolling the place. He checked us out when we got there and was friendly. We liked him.

Be aware that your room can be locked without a key. I.e., you can lock yourself out.

Very nice place to stay, especially good to get away from Belize City and experience something a bit different. About 15 minutes from the airport along the Belize River and they will pick you up after collecting your luggage. The grounds are very pleasing and the staff wonderful. Overall the place is a bit tired and could use a bit of TLC and some updates (hot tub on the roof not usable, some new paint here and there), but the restaurant food is good and reasonably priced. The Conch fritters are the best we had during our two week stay in Belize.

Typical of a place like this you’ll wait a bit for your food, but it helps slow you down and is a good reminder you are in another country. The rooms are spacious and clean and the towels and bedding plush. I would recommend this place as a good spot to go for a day or two after flying in and/or flying out of the main airport.

My husband and I stayed at the Black Orchid for just one night in March before we headed off to an island for a week of diving. Black Orchid was on the list of recommended resorts near Belize City that was provided by our island resort. We were glad to find a place that was out of the city, in a safe, peaceful location on a river. We were also very glad that Black Orchid offered a variety of day trips, so we were able to fit in a tour to see one of the pyramid ruins called: Altun Ha.

We arrived to Belize International airport and a driver from Black Orchid came to pick us up. A little while after we checked in, we took our tour of Altun Ha. We were surprised that we were the only ones on the tour, so we had a private guide. Besides being very good explaining everything about Belize and the ruins, he was also kind enough to pull over to let us stop at a food store to pick up some of Belize’s famous Marie Sharpe’s hot sauce.

Our room was very casual, with a nice deck area that faced the river and also the pool off to one side. When we were sitting out, we were greeted by the distinctive sound of Howler monkeys and were able to spot a family high up in some trees right beside the resort.

We had a nice seafood dinner at the resort that evening. All staff were very friendly. We wished we had another couple of days to stay there so that we could go on a few more tours and explore the area. A driver took us back to the airport the next day for us to catch our flight to our next destination.

If we ever get back to Belize again, and needed to stay near Belize City, we would definitely book a stay at Black Orchid again. Friendly staff, a safe, peaceful setting with a variety of interesting personal tours.

So here’s the thing... the black orchid is only 20 minutes from the airport, which is great but to see Lamanai ruins it’s a 45 min drive and an hour boat ride, North . To see Xunantunich, in San Ignacio it’s an 1 1/2 drive west... to go to Placencia it’s 2 hours south , not sure what ruins you can see there. We used Williams shuttle on several lengths of our trip and they’d be happy to give you a quote . 4 nights is not a lot of time in Belize , I haven’t been but perhaps you’d be better going to San Pedro or Caye caulker for your beach experience , which you can catch a ferry to from Belize city... hope this helps

Peg, I would echo what Rick said. The folks at the Black Orchid can pick you up and drop you back at the airport. In the afternoon, you may be able to go to the "Baboon" Sanctuary (not really Baboons, but up close and personal with the Howler Monkeys). The next morning you might be able to arrange for one of the people at Black Orchid to take you on a trip on the river before they take you back to the airport. They are very nice people there! Its a pretty small resort, but they are good at trying their best for the people staying with them. Email them and ask for suggestions and for their help.
