Stayed at this hotel last Saturday night and, contrary to some previous reviews, had a very pleasant experience. First impressions of avenue and hotel grounds are impressive. Interior would benefit from some updating and refurb but was outweighed by the following positives.. High standards of warmth and professionalism were portrayed by staff who work extremely hard, with specific mention to one very helpful lady who offered advice on scenic walks in the area. Note! Material standards are important but staff attitude and professionalism are equally important Bedroom was compact but clean and pleasantly decorated and had access to a balcony which was great on a warm evening. Bed was comfortable and there were ample tea and coffee making facilities. Quality and presentation of meal in dining room was on par with fine dining restaurants we have visited. Despite dining room being extremely busy, service at our table was excellent and staff worked extremely hard. Breakfast was good although would have benefitted from more extensive continental selection. For those wishing to enjoy some craic there was music in the bar. One minor criticism is that I booked online at cost of £124 sterling but was quoted £131 sterling conversion from euros when checking out. Opted to pay in euros and allow my bank to convert which also came to £131 sterling. Overall very positive experience in an hotel with fine character, came home totally relaxed and looking forward to returning.…
Visited Ballymascanlon today with my parents and had food in the terrace bar. Food was very good but the service from the staff was just excellent. Such friendly and helpful staff. A credit to them. Will be back.
We eat here very often and over the years have always loved the food. Until it changed ownership this was the best place for a casual meal or a meal in the restaurant where the food was always excellent. Tonight we went for a meal, the service was poor but the food was nothing short of terrible. The prawn cocktail was 4 large lettuce leaves with 5 prawns served in a bowl with no points for appearance. The main meal was turkey & ham, chefs special, wouldn’t like to see his worst. The potatoes were soggy, heated up obviously, carrots were rubbery, obviously old, the cauliflower was undercooked, the roast potato nearly left the table when I tried to cut into it. The turkey, ham & stuffing was mediocre & that is being kind about it. So, so disappointed from start to finish. The first time we have ever left without a dessert & a coffee. Will be a long time before we return. One blessing was we were on our own & hadn’t brought friends out for a meal. A sad day when new management can’t keep old standards up * seem to have cheapened everything. Floor was untidy in several different areas, maybe staff are disillusioned also, they were helpful & courteous but the heart of the place is gone.…
Our room wasn't quite ready when we arrived but we were able to store our bags and take a walk around the grounds in the glorious sunshine. Neither of us play golf but the golf course looked lovely and well kept. We finally made it to our room which was spacious enough with 1 double and 2 single beds. I will note that due to this being a beautiful older house there is no air conditioning or ventilation however reception organised 2 fans for us. We made good use of the swimming pool which was clean and well kept. *This was included in the price and kids could go right up til 6pm. We ate in the Terrace bar that evening and the food was very nice. Portion sizes are generous. Breakfast was also included and was delicious with a wide range of both cooked and continental on offer. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. It was clean and our room was perfect for the 4 of us. My one complaint would be that it was a little noisy at times however we coped and we would definitely return here.…
We visited the restaurant on 2 July for a birthday teat. The menu was very limited. There were no prices on the food so we had no idea what we were paying for any item on the very limited menu. It turned out that it seemed to be a 2 course or 3 course meal and this set the price. No one explained this and the menu didnt either. For the main course champ was ordered and mash was brought out. The waitress argued it was champ and finally reluctantly took it away. Its took over 10 minutes for the "champ" to arrive and it was like paste. If you put it on a spoon it dripped off the spoon and was a runny mess. The waitress did nothing to fix this and just smiled and walked off. The vegetables were hard as a rock and how a chef sent this food out to customers in a 4* hotel is beyond me. When raised with the waitress she said "are they" but did nothing to change the hard vegetables and just walked away. When we got the bill we were charged a supplement for a lamb dinner, of which there is no such supplement. The cashier put it down to a "senior moment". All in all a very disappointing experience and not worth the hefty costs given the substandard food that was served. Neither me or my friends will be rushing back to this awful restaurant. Thanks goodness we were not staying given the poor breakfast reviews this hotel also appears to have received! I wouldn't recommend this place for food. I am local and not just "passing through". There are much better places to eat in the area. Very poor from the Ballymac.…
Just spent a very enjoyable and memorable weekend at Ballymcscanlon Hse Hotel. It was my mothers Birthday and the staff went above and beyond to ensure she and the whole family were looked after, The food and service in the main restaurant was excellent. The facilities were enjoyed by all. Looking forward to my next visit
I have always enjoyed going to bar for food. However the last number of visits the service I have received was very poor. On the most recent visit when we arrived it took 20 minutes for us to be given menus. We had to ask a staff member for them. Again no one came over to take our order I had to chase down a waiter to order. Once our meal arrived it was fine but nothing special. However no one checked in on us once the meal was served. We then had to ask two different staff members for the bill which took 20 minutes for it to appear. The bar wasn’t that busy so I’ve no idea why the service was so poor. It used to an experience and luxury to go here. Now it’s a chore.
We arrived June bank holiday Saturday, a wedding was also at hotel so they were accommodated first and the rest of us had to wait until almost 5pm to check into our rooms as none were ready So unprofessional and being told by receptionist its check in from 15.30 onwards, sorry That is wrong information on her part, its the customer that checks in from 15.30 onwards ,room should be ready by this time, Room very basic but clean, grounds were nice too Breakfast was lovely, cocktails appalling .
We had our wedding reception on 16th April a memorable day was had for us with family, friends and colleagues. The grounds of this hotel are fabulous everything was perfect, a special thanks to all the staff for making our day so special. From the moment we contacted the Ballymacscallon in February 2021 Karen was extremely helpful and approachable. I had many questions and Karen answered each one with lots of advise and guidance. There was also plenty of help via email and phone by the reception staff and Karen throughout the months leading up to accommodation bookings special thanks to Linda who I dealt with on a number of occasions. Thanks to the kitchen staff and head chef for the beautiful food we had many compliments. Thanks to Fiona for the diligent planning with the table plans, menu tastings, email correspondences, ceremony and dining rooms organising and logistics. Finally thanks to Olly for being with us the day and evening of the wedding the planning coordination was seamless. We looking forward to returning very soon. Many thanks Regards Edel & Ken…
Nice hotel with a golf course and tennis courts. Leisure centre is dated but still good for a swim. Nice breakfast. Evening meal was very nice and plenty of food on the plate. Rooms were nice. Staff very friendly.
