On the island of Grenada we stayed at Twelve Degrees North, we had a large apartment with a spectacular balcony view of sailboats anchored in the bay, a nice pool, beautiful landscape garden pathways, hammocks on the deck over the water, Don't expect air conditioning, telephones, or televisions, but their always seemed to be a nice island breeze and of course the ceiling fans it never seemed hot or humid nd just so quiet and peaceful. Our housekeeper, prepared breakfast and lunch for us, and she was an excellent cook, always preparing local grown island favorites. Our host Joe Gaylord was always available and answered all our questions about where to visit and what to see on this beautiful island of spices. One of the best relaxing, stress free vacations I've ever experienced. If you want to relax and have a stress free vacation without the hustle and bustle Twelve Degrees North is the perfect place...and Joe makes some of the best rum punch around.

No phone or TV and spotty internet. But who needs that stuff when you have a spectacular balcony view of sailboats at anchor in the bay, a nice pool, hammocks on a deck over the water, a dock with pet fish that come by for the evening feeding at sunset, and a host who truly wants his guests to enjoy the paradise he has so carefully constructed. The apartments are well outfitted for cooking, but as we were on vacation and didn't plan on cooking, we were quite pleased to find out that our housekeeper, Donna, would prepare breakfast and lunch when requested, and she is an excellent cook! There is no air conditioning but the island breezes, supplemented by the ceiling fans when the breezes fade in the wee hours of morning, kept things comfortable. We were exceptionally pleased to find screens on the windows and doors to keep mosquitoes at bay and so had no need to close things up at night to avoid getting sucked dry. The kitchen was stocked with drinks, sandwich fixings and snacks when we arrived, with a system to return anything we did not want the next morning. There was no housekeeping service on Sunday, which was OK as there were extra towels in the closet. Otherwise, the housekeeper does laundry daily, BTW- if you really want a phone, Mr. Gaylord will provide a cell phone free of charge.

We’re one of those couples who’ve been coming to this unique hideaway for years and can’t imagine a year without Grenada and Twelve Degrees North. But we realized we never have written a review! Forget those built up resort islands and slick “boutique” chain hotels that we find impersonal and standardized. Joe Gaylord’s personal paradise is set on a gentle hillside over a beautiful bay at l’Anse aux Épines, positioned beautifully, so the breezes and ceiling fan make AC unnecessary and you can hear the waves at night. There are only 6 very spacious, immaculate one-bedroom apartments with a balcony overlooking the water, where you eat your meals and can snooze on the lounge chairs if you like. It’s not the latest fashion décor, but very comfortable and pristinely clean. Down the hill is the partly tree-shaded snorkel beach with decking over the water and a small sandy beach behind—with lounge chairs and hammocks—plus a jetty that takes you out to stairs into the water and pretty decent snorkeling. There’s also a pool and kayaks for your use. But best and most unique are the wonderful housekeepers who are there daily to not only keep the apartment clean, but make whatever meals you’d like (and leave dinner on the stove to warm up if you wish) and do your laundry (see laundry bag on the back of the bathroom door). We love Bernadette, but everyone feels that way about their own housekeeper. It’s definitely helpful to rent a car—to shop, go out for dinner if you want and look around the island, though many manage without. Joe, who created this place in the 60’s, is a great host and has become a friend. Of course it’s not for those who need limbo nights and a whirl of activities and crowds. This is a place where you can kick back and relax in beautiful, non-intrusive surroundings, and we’re pretty sure its model is unique in the Caribbean—we’ve looked!

We stayed at Twelve Degrees North for 5 days in November. We picked this establishment due to previous reviews on T.A. and also because we wanted something a little unusual as we were used to staying in hotels and not self catering. We were not disappointed by the facilities provided, in fact we actually delighted as the place is far better than we had expected. Twelve Degrees North is situated very centrally in Lance aux Epines (half a mile from the Calabash Hotel) on a very quiet road. However, it has a wonderful jetty and patio area on Prickly Bay where we spent hours upon hours swimming and sitting, just watching the world going by. The jetty protrudes well out into the bay and has a beautiful natural coral reef that you can snorkel and dive on. The sunsets sitting on the jetty are really spectacular. The views really are to 'die' for and many a property on the island would give their 'right arm' for the setting that Twelve Degrees North has. The accommodation is large and perfectly adequate for all your needs. Large sitting room/Kitchen with outside balcony, huge bedroom, shower room and dressing area. The apartment has natural ventilation with large fans provided and mosquito shutters on all the windows. You also have the added bonus of having Candice or Belinda (staff members) to help prepare your breakfast or lunch. Candice prepared the most beautiful fish curry for us. All you have to do is buy the provisions for your stay and these ladies will take good care of you if you don't want to go out to restaurants. The owner of the property Joseph Gaylord has a wealth of local information, having lived on the island since 1967 and is a most accommodating host. Please take time to talk to Joe as he is a really interesting person and nothing is too much trouble for him. We just wish we had had more time to spend with him. Maybe next year? There is a real mix of accommodation for the visitor to Grenada/St George's to choose from but Twelve Degrees North is unique and is not run of the mill. Thank you all again for a wonderful stay.
