We arrived mid-week, mid-autumn. So the Arms were quiet. Were given a choice of rooms, which was good as there was a noticeable difference between the two. Both in terms of size, and the decor. I can see some people taking issue with the 'adult' art in some rooms, and in certain wings of the Arms. Depending on the room you could have anything from a collection of small old black and white portraits of british 50s and 60s rock stars, to modern, large naked or semi naked photos, to portraits of Mr White.

Aside from the art, which we loved and found fascinating, the bedrooms were decorated in a modern-gentrified take on victorian style. Really very nice, comfortable, and clearly done with care and consideration. Essentially not like most hotels. Our chosen room had a king size bed, it was super comfortable with good quality clean linen. The bathroom was HUGE, and decorated to equal quality with a huge bath - and thankfully enough hot water to fill it a couple times. Robes and slippers were included in the room.

The grounds are spacious, and feature (i assume) plants and livestock used in the restaurant. During our visit the grounds were in an expected autumnal state, which gave them a distinct beauty. The views out from the grounds across Wiltshire were stunning. Definitely a beautiful and comfortable place inside and out.

The rest of the house was taken up with a number wonderfully decorated sitting rooms, which were free to use, and of course the restaurant / bar.

We stayed there with a voucher which meant the rooms were incredibly good value, even before the included meals.

Downsides (not big enough for us to warrant dropping from 5 stars).
- the lighting throughout the property is very dark, potentially to a fault. During autumn when the days are dark it is impossible to get any meaningful light in the bedroom
- no hot drink making facilities in the room - although they could be requested via the front desk, e.g. early in the morning if you're the kind of person that needs tea @ 6am!
- no WIFI or TV in the rooms - this isn't the place to come if you want modern comforts like this

Overall rating - We would definitely stay there again, especially as it is so close to Bath.

What an amazing quirky and fabulous find. We did a two night Whocher deal as it seemed did everyone else. Fabulous mouseman furniture, unbelievable paintings and photographs, and an eclectic range of shelf fillers. Just fabulous,as was the selection of art books which guests were encouraged to take back to their rooms if they didn’t want to peruse them in one of the four comfortable lounges. Tea and coffees served quickly by the wonderful staff, free of charge. Sad that the lighting is kept SO low that over our wet and grey weekend we could only enjoy them when sitting directly under the tiny table lamps. Staying two nights we certainly enjoyed our supper on the first night but were at a total loss when the menu was almost identical on the second evening, even down to the same soup. We paid a supplement of £5 each for ‘ FINEST Atlantic’ prawn cocktail. Totally tasteless and if that is the finest it’s time to change the fishmonger. Such a disappointment. Being a none meat eater I had a fishcake the first evening , the only fish offered ,then the second evening the same fish cake offered so I decided on the only vegetarian option a polenta based dish which was just OK. With Mr White’s first class reputation as a top chef we where very disappointed. The quality generally was good but the choice VERY poor. Of the six mains offered three were steaks with a hefty supplement, one a pheasant breast, one fish cake and the veggie as mentioned. I asked a member of staff about choice and she said if people come for three or four nights they often get the same menu throughout. Breakfast well served and a good choice but no fruit and yogurt as an option. The granola was very sweet but didn’t try the porridge ( made to order) No fish except smoked salmon. Beautifully poached eggs though and lovely mushrooms. Staff an absolute credit. Happy, worked well as a team ,and attentive and friendly. Congratulations to whoever is in charge there. Beautiful grounds, excellent housekeeping and an exceptional stay . Maybe we need to explore supper elsewhere after the first night in future.

A bit disappointed to say the least, the room we stayed in was very basic. The communal area needed a face lift, carpets worn and dirty. The meal was okay but didn't set the world alight. The main house was far too hot, we would have liked to relax in one of the lounges but it was too hot. The drinks were very expensive , £9.50 for a small glass of house red wine. The staff didn't know what wines were available by the glass either.

Stayed for two nights at this wonderful hotel - more like being a guest in MPW’s home. Decor fab, food delicious, staff excellent and as for Clive............

Stayed in the main house, room had beautiful mouseman furniture and the rocking horse was great at the foot of the bed.

Another great stay and the staff are really friendly. Mr Pierre White was there and took trouble with any guest he came across. The steak was particularly good and worthy of note. Bedroom and bathroom were very well appointed

I’m not sure either, but I don’t think it’s the type of place children would enjoy. Much more couples and small group type of place
