During the first week of September 2020, we did a road trip from Jakarta, through Java, to Bali and made it all the way within a 15-hour-drive! In this covid-19 era, everything was closing early so we couldn’t find any restaurants that would be open for dinner when we got into Bali. We called the The Menjangan when we were on the ferry crossing from Banyuwangi (East Java) to Gilimanuk (Bali) asking if they could have a simple dinner prepared for us when we check in. It was late night around 10:30 pm when we arrived at the hotel. We were very pleasantly surprised!! Upon checking in, not only they still served us chilled face-towels, fresh spring rolls, and ginger tea (funny I thought the spring rolls were our dinner I was about to run back to the car and bring out the left-over bread we brought from Jakarta! haha…), but they actually took us to Pantai Restaurant, their restaurant by the beach, and had the full menu available for us to order from! The food was fantastic! The service was amazing! And the staff was friendly! Around midnight we were taken to our rooms at the Monsoon lodge which is located in the middle of the West Bali National Park. The Menjangan resort is so spread apart. From the restaurant beach area to our lodge is about a 15-minute drive on the hotel's safari-style open van. We booked two suites. My sister-in-law was in one room. Her two teenage daughters and I were in another room. The suite was very nice and spacious! King-size bed, sitting area with TV, dining table and kitchenette, and the bathroom down the hall. My youngest niece took a shower first, then afterwards went straight to bed. My elder niece took a shower next. When she was done, she got out of the bathroom, looked at me, and said, if I were you I would not use the bathroom. I asked, why? She said because there is someone at the window. I said maybe it’s a monkey. We are in the middle of the forest, and there are lots of monkeys around. I went into the bathroom, my niece trailing behind me. I opened the window. It’s a swing window with frosted/opaque film on the inside glass so that no one could see in or out. I saw that out of the window was the forest (there was no wall or anything separating the lodge from the surrounding area). I looked right and left. I told my niece I didn’t see anything and told her to go to bed. I closed the window and made sure it was properly latched (the thought that I actually opened the window at the time still unnerved me so much now!). I stayed in the bathroom, kept the bathroom door open, still fully clothed. I brushed my teeth, keeping an eye on the bathroom window at all times. All of a sudden, a man’s face appeared slowly, then his whole face and part of his upper body were completely plastered on the frosted glass window. His features were so clear. He had a strange yet scary expression on his face. I was so horribly shocked!! I screamed twice as loud as I could and ran out of the bathroom down the hallway, passed the dining table and kitchen, towards the bedroom. My niece sat up on the bed with big terrified eyes staring at me. I was hoping my loud screams would have brought security or my sister-in-law to my door step. But no one came! By this time it was almost 2 am. I quickly went to the phone and dialed “0.” No one picked up the phone. I dialed again. Still no one. I saw a small piece of paper next to the phone and picked it up. I read “dial 0 for operator (so I did dial correctly!), dial 500 for manager.” I quickly dialed “500.” Omg no one picked up!! I dialed again, still nothing! I tried hard to fight a rising panic. I told my niece to call her mom on the mobile phone. She told me she had been trying but her mom was not picking up her phone too! Can you imagine the state of mind I was in by then? Killer on the loose! Everyone was dead!! We would be next!!! I could not help my imagination run wild. After a few minutes my niece told me that her mom finally picked up the phone. She was in the shower thus didn’t hear her calls. All of us dove into her room and stayed there for the night. I talked to my niece about what we saw (because we saw it at different times when each of us were in the bathroom). I know we saw the same thing. A man was wearing a black shirt. His skin was fair. His facial features were refined. He had short black hair. I couldn’t sleep the whole night. I was so scared who could be out there. In the morning, when it was daylight, we all went back to our bathroom. I inspected the window from the bathroom door. I couldn’t see anything peculiar. Then I walked closer towards the window. I couldn’t believe what I saw! (See pictures attached.) There was a tiny hole in the window film. This hole allows anyone on the inside to see out, but also anyone outside can see in! I told everyone what I saw. My niece said she also just saw a similar hole in a similar location in her mom’s bathroom. So I wonder, was that a Peeping Tom we saw at our bathroom window? How many other lodges have bathrooms with holes in the window film? The hole was carved on the sticker which is on the inside glass of the window. This must be an inside job then? Worst of all though, no one picked up our frantic phone calls at 2 am. What if there was fire? What if someone was having a heart attack? The rooms at the Monsoon lodge are so out of the way. We didn’t have our cars with us (the cars were parked at the reception at the Bali Tower) so we depended on the hotel’s van to take us around. We reported everything that happened this to the manager when we saw him in the morning. He apologized. And upgraded us to the beach villas which are spacious, luxurious, comfortable and located right on the beach. I appreciate the gesture. After much thought however, I decided to write this review anyway. I tried to contact the owners but to no avail. I need to hear from management about what happened. Are they following-up on the incident? I was with two teenage girls in the suite, well away from civilization. It's frightening to think what could have happened. We could not get anyone from the hotel to come to our aid. Has the hotel found out anything about the man? Where was the security? Where was the night manager? Have they checked the CCTV? How many rooms have the hole in the window film? The Menjangan is truly a beautiful and special place. At the Monsoon lodge the rooms surround a nice big pool in the middle of nature. At the villas by the beach you can see monkeys just frolicking around, and many deer roaming around the villas and crossing the beach as they walk into the sea. The people at the hotel were nice and the service was fantastic. I hope The Menjangan will properly respond on this incident which will impact the general feeling of security about the place.

The Menjangan Resort is the perfect place where you can live the true essence of Bali: nature, sea, spirituality, and total relaxation. Far away from the crowded holidays of Bali south (Denpasar area), you can sleep directly on the beach in a luxury Balinese style villa or at Monsoon lodge in the middle of the forest, with the sing of birds that wake up you together with the first rays of the sun. no cars, no trucks, no shops, no disco. If you have a trip around Bali this is the best place on the northwest of the Island where spend the last part of your holidays. Incomparable breakfast with dozens of deer that cross the beach at some meters by you, you don’t need to go to monkey’s forest: monkeys are living around you in perfect harmony with nature. The stunning effect of tides discover 200 mt of beach every twelve hours, unforgettable diving at the Menjangan Island (twenty minutes of local little boats ) with one of the most crystal and emerald seas, an horseback ride in the forest and on the sea, some visit at the local Hindu temples or participating at some local religious ceremony, a birds sanctuary and, why not, a good book to enjoy on the beach, and friendly staff and service (they say “ we are a family), complete your Balinese vacation. See you next time Island of Gods!

Me and my families were there for 2 nights, we booked the moonson deluxe but switched it to beachfront villas at the spot. Best decision ever! Staff are friendly and helpful during our stay, not to mention the breakfast though 😍 and so many animals around the area we found deers and monkeys in front of our villa! Sunrise in front of our room is amazing! We also booked a snorkling in Menjangan Island which 15mins boat ride form the resort and it was amazing. I suggest you book the beachfront villa for your visit here 🥰 will definitely coming back and recommend to our friends and family.

The hotel is really nice and clean. We felt very well looked after. We stayed at the Monsoon accommodation which was fantastic apart from the fact that it takes15mins to get to the restaurant and has no room service. I am not sure if there is anything they can do about that, but I would definitely have spent more if it was closer. I felt that the prices were a bit on the expensive side if compared to the quality. Breakfast was EXCELLENT! The food at the restaurant was good but there is definitely room for improvement. We also missed a good dessert! There are A LOT of monkeys around, the staff does their best to keep them away, we had no incidents. Even though I am scared of monkeys I would still go back and recommend.
