Tysfjord Turistsenter Hotel is located 250 km above Arctic circle. We are a base camp for wildlife/killer whale safaris in Norway, and offer modern hotel rooms with all conveniences. The hotel also has lecture and conference rooms, and a large, pleasant reception area with an open fireplace where flames burn most of the day. The complex is in a picturesque setting, looking onto the idyllic Storjordpolden and facing Norway's national mountain, the Stetind. Some of the world's most beautiful rock carvings are close by. The Tysfjord Tourist Centre is a hotel big enough to meet most requirements, but small enough to ensure personal contact and good service.

We stopped here one night before traveling to Lofoten. The room was OK, we got a good evening meal and the owner was very nice and professional. The location was quiet. I do think the owner make all the difference and make this hotel better than the structure it self.

Seeing Northern lights and orcas in the sea is far from granted. We met people who were still looking for it after many days / weeks spent in Tysfjord. It depends upon migration, weather, luck etc.
Staying at the Turistsenter was a very good experience for us. The staff (Edmundas+Anthony) is super friendly, the food is good (specially their local fishsoup) and the place quite nice. During our first orca trip, we saw a sea eagle diving for a fish. No orca but still worth it.
For our last day (January 7th) we went further north and saw orcas and humpback whales after hours of searching around. It was an amazing show.

Room was well used, staff was indifferent to us, dinning room food was average. During late night early morning, reception was closed (locked). We had dinner in the Hotel restaurant, food was just ok. No coffee in room. Room was quiet.

Really needed an upgrade this whole place. The sink in the bathroom smelled like pee and the room was old and worn out furniture and a lamp that hanged the wrong way. The breakfast was dry bread and scrambled eggs that tasted like rubber. Will definitly never go here again.

The rooms were comfy, staff were friendly and supportive, they have a bar with pool table and a big screen to watch some football.
in this place you get for what you pay for. was not a bad experience but i would reconsider as its pure basic place

We booked the killer whale snorkelling trip via email, two nights in a cabin and the snorkelling trip, expecting a nice stay and a cool orca experience. Little did we know that tysfjord offered so much more then that!

Edmundas answered all emails happily and professionally throughout the booking and planning stage, we ended up booking one of the cabins by the water. We LOVED it! Let me put it down for you in an easy way:

ACCOMMODATION:
- lovely cabin for the three of us, nice shower and toilet, self contained with stove and fridge, wifi in the cabin (even though that wasn't even expected, so lucky us)
- in the main hotel they had a bar and restaurant, with free coffee and tea.
- next to the hotel there was a little shop, perfect for us making our own food in the cabin!

STAFF:
- the manager Edmundas was super enthusiastic about both whales, northern lights and the area in general. It was great to meet someone loving their job and it really made all of us even more happy
- unfortunately I can't remember the names of the girls in reception but they made us feel just as welcome! And all of them joined us outside looking at the northern lights together.

TOURS AND THINGS TO DO:
- killer whale safari was amazing, they were hunting and we saw them all over the place! It's cold on the boat so put plenty of clothes on! But you will also be given warm clothes to put on under your dry suit.
- northern lights, you could see them almost every night and one of the nights it covered almost the whole sky! Keep in mind that it's nature and none of the above experiences is a guarantee. Fortunately we got it all!
- around tysfjord you can do plenty of hiking and it's a lovely area to explore on foot if you have a day over :) (which we had, coz we ended up staying an extra night because we loved the place to bits)
- Edmundas was kind enough to let us try his six wheeler and that was SO MUCH FUN!

No complaints what so ever!
We drove from Sweden and arrived in tysfjord in the afternoon, and left with the on-time ferry three days later :)

Thank you so much, all of you working there!

Kristin, Darren and Danni

Some years ago there were Orcas in Tysfjord. Today, there are none. The Orcas moved North to Andenes and beyond. So there is no reason to go to Tysfjord. They still offer Orca tours, but they will just transfer you to Andenes. So you need to travel a long distance without any reason. Also, they cheat a bit with the prices! Hard negotiations afterwards, etc.
So you should book there directly with Lofoten Oppleveser or Seasafari Andenes. Alternatively, check Pico Sport on the Acores or Wirodive, as they offer Orca camps and liveaboards in Northern Norway for Orca snorkeling.

Besides, if you are passing Tysfjord, the hotel is ok (neither especially good or bad).

Hi AdmBreen(sorry, do not know your real name), Fist of all thank you for your review. Tysfjord Turistsenter AS(hotel) is the first company in Norway to offer killer whale safaris and snorkelling for over 20 years ago. Since the beginning we always hired Lofoten Opplevelser to run boats as a partner. Some years ago, when migration of herring have changed, after some research we have decided to run tours from Andenes and we brought Lofoten Opplevelser there. Our basecamp always was in Tysfjord. Part of our guests come directly to Andenes and part(mostly those who wish to experience also other activities, not only killer whale safaris) come here to Tysfjord. All this information we provide on our web page, facebook and by communicating on emails or phone. We even have our partner hotel in Andenes for those who wish to travel directly there. We even have a plan to run killer whale tours from Tromso(together with Lofoten Oppleveleser). Killer whales do not belong to Tysfjord, Andenes or Tromso and with our crew experience we are ready to follow where ever they migrate. It could be the same with northern lights. Some times we, and other operators in all northern Norway have to travel all night for many hundred km. to be able to find them. It is nature not zoo! I am not sure what you mean about cheating? If you stay in Tysfjord you pay for killer whale safari 200 NOK more then if you stay in Andenes because of travel costs(ferry and bus drive). I guess it is way cheeper then travelling to Andenes on your own with 2 flights from Oslo. One more thing.... for past couple years we observe big increasing of herring in Tysfjord and Vestfjord and most likely in couple years killer whales might be back in this area again. And what would you say if you travel to Andenes then? Blame Sea Safari? We can not predict nature so we try to be flexible what ever it brings. All the best from Tysfjord :)

We wanted to experience orcas (killer whales) up close and found that Tysfjord Turistsenter offered this, at least thats what we thought. Because their really just more like a distributor, which comes with a premium.

We had to drive 4 hours to Andenes, the destination for the safari, with very little information from the Tysfjord Turistsenter (other than what was on their webpage) while on our way. Luckily we decided to get something to eat when we finally arrived to Andenes, right before going out on the water, because all we got to eat during the day that ended up lasting from 9 in the morning till 9 at night was some soup.

The orca safari is arranged by Lofoten Opplevelsesreiser, out from Andenes, and had we known this we probably would have chosen a different route to Andenes (Tysfjord was a detour). Lofoten Opplevelsesreiser was great!

It seems that all that Tysfjord Turistsenter did was provide the (unnecessary) bus transport from Tysfjord to Andenes, and back. The driver was nice and sweet, but unfortunately we missed our ferry when going back, by a mer 10 minutes, which caused us to loose 1 whole hour (we had to wait for the ferry to come back). The driver should have easily been able to pick up that amount of time in the 2 hour drive, e.g. by not stopping two times for breaks.

Our initial plan had been to drive back to Bodø that night (a 3 hour drive), but the delay made this a real drag, we asked the receptionist for a discount for a second night at the turistsenter (which was not full), but was offered a mere 100 NOK of the 1190 NOK price per night, which seemed meaningless.

No need to go into detail on the hotel more over; but the rooms were scary (think it might be haunted by an interior decorator who died in the 1990s), and we suspect that the breakfast and coffee might have been airdropped a few weeks before.

Hello Sverre, and thank you for review ! I am sure it will help us to improve. First of all I beliewe you have looked at our web page where it sais that we drive for killer whale safari 150 km to the staring point. That is because of migration of herring. Tysfjord Turistsenter AS is the first operator in Norway who started with killer whale safaris over 20 years ago. We always worked with our partners and Lofoten Opplevelser is one the oldest partner wich was working with us here i Tysfjord, Lofoten and other places wher ever Orcas move. Since I have not met you personaly, qand you say you have been Riped Off, I want to ask you: Did you pay more than was agreed or more than it sais on our web page? Did you not get what you have paid? Did you not see whales or did not snorkel with them? If so, please answer me and we will pay back all your money!!! One more thing Sverre: You have booked 2 rooms and safari for 4 people. Day before arrval you send an email that you will be just 2 people and need just one room. Did we charge you for this? On your email you said you will arrive 23:00 and on arrival day you called and said you will be here at 00:30, but at finally you arrived 02:00 without warning. That is way more than late arrival. Did we say something? We let you keep your luggage in the room until you come back from safari. Did we cahrge you for this? So if you really feel Riped Off, please answer or call me +47 94231490

After a long drive from Bodo, the Turistsenter was a much needed respite from the long lonely road. Simple & basic, it had everything I needed for a good night's sleep. The views around Tysfjord are spectacular, especially in winter. Staff were friendly and welcoming. One down-point was the price which was expensive for what it offered but when you're the only hotel for miles you can get away with it I guess!

Happened across this turissenter hotel after ferry crossing heading south on the E6. 10 minutes from the Skarbergt/Bognes ferry.
The hotel offers rooms, chalets and camping. Camping facilities are situated at the rear of the main building, with male and female showers, laundry and drying room and a pretty well equipped kitchen room.

Gorgeous view across the peninsula from the camping ground. Restaurant on site as well. We had a very nice meal in the evening, which didn't break the bank...although we didn't order alcohol.

The staff were very kind and helpful as well as very patient with two non Norwegian speaking happy campers. There is free Wi-Fi available in and around the reception area.
