Detailed Reviews
We are travelling in Costa Rica and through our adventure, we have seen many different hotels. None of them was like Luna Azul. This place is magical and makes you feel like coming home the moment you park your car. The Hotel has few small bungalows and each of them has an amazing veranda with a view in the wild. We have chosen Room Pacifico because here you can enjoy the afternoon sun and sunset. The rooms are spotless and every morning after breakfast the cleaning employees already made the room. The highlight of the hotel is the Restaurant. This is none like usual hotel buffet-style type. Everything is made freshly. Fresh bred like we are only used to have in Switzerland. Did not see bread like that for a long time. For the dinner, you can choose between 4 starters and 4 main dishes. The small menu guarantees high-quality dishes. The cusine is famous in this region so it happens, that even people from outside reserve a table to enjoy the foods. You don't have to worry as a guest of Rolf you can be sure you will always have your table.
You don't have direct access to the ocean from here but the next beach is 5 min away by car. Rolf was an excellent host, he talked to us about nature and gave us a lot of value. He knows many locals and if you are planning a tour it is worthwhile to consult with Rolf first.
Unfortunately, we have to leave today but this hotel will stay in our memories. Thank you, Rolf, and to all the employees.

An absolutely fabulous destination. Rolf and his team obviously invest immense attention and care to create a magical experience. The room is so immaculate and the open air bathroom and patio so thoughtfully designed to provide access to the outdoors and nature, but also privacy. The included breakfast exceeded all my expectations: freshly cut fruit, yogurt, granola, piping hot slices of homemade bread, omelette, gallo pinto, delicious hot cocoa. Everything served to perfection. The grounds staff maintain beautiful and lush vines, flowers, bushes and trees. With the beaches just a short drive away, I highly recommend Luna Azul.

We loved our stay at Luna Azul and are already trying to plan a return trip to coincide with the turtle arribadas on Optional beach. The hotel is on a hill overlooking the pacific with beautiful sunsets. The grounds are beautiful, filled with flowers and beautiful trees. This encourages wildlife to visit - howler monkeys, iguanas and coatis. Rolf and Andreas have created an oasis here with beautifully decorated bungalows that have large balconies overlooking a tree lined valley. There are only 8 rooms which helps to create an intimate and relaxing atmosphere. Rolf is a wonderful host - always welcoming, helpful, thoughtful and entertaining. The food here is amazing and Rolf will also give recommendations for good restaurants in the area as the restaurant is closed on a tuesday.
I can't recommend this hotel enough - it is so enjoyable and relaxing

Finally, after all this time of being good people, the universe finally gave us a gift: this place! It is, literally, a hidden gem. The place was clean, the staff was friendly/professional/polite/competent, and Rolf (one of the owners) was just a delightful person. He knows a lot about the customs of Costa Rica, so if you have any questions, he's more than happy to answer them. We took advantage of that. Also, he's a biologist, so he can tell you a whole lot of interesting things about the fauna. Interesting guy.
Lots of critters show up on the property because that's where they live, and unless you are staying at a Hilton by the airport, you will be having encounters with them.
For the people that complained about the location not being near the beach, whose fault was that, huh? They couldn't have checked the map first? Ok. I am not here for that. I just think that so many people like to blame everything on other people as a choice in life. Apologies. Moving on....
The food was great and delicious. The chef's skills were definitely Los Angeles quality ready!
Our room had a beautiful balcony that overlook this amazing greenery and then the ocean behind it. Simply breathtaking! The toilet, sink and shower are outdoors, but really well planned out and private. No, you are not sharing with anyone and no one can see you. It was a trip taking a shower while it was raining. It was something I never I knew I would experience. Sounds simple, but it was definitely something new.
Anything we wanted to do, we just needed to ask Rolf and he made it happen, with plenty of details before we decide if we wanted to go for it or not. No pressure at all.
We were there for the turtles Arribadas and he told us when they were coming and which days are the best to check in at the hotel in order to not miss this grand monthly event.
The beaches nearby has rough sand, so bring sandals or aqua shoes for comfort when walking on the sand.
We had a rental car, so we drove to all sorts of locations and beaches up and down the road. Rough road, by the way, so make sure you get an SUV. You get used to it quickly. I mean, if the locals can do it, when can't you? ;-)
Bring mosquito repellent because this is Costa Rica...and don't spray on any rubber material or touch soft plastic stuff without washing your hands first because that stuff kind of corrodes them. I left a palm print on my phone's "wet bag".
Anyhow, this is a sure bet for a peaceful stay with quality service. Just remember to: rent an SUV, there are small stretches of rough road, and mosquito repellent.
We will definitely be going back!

We loved this place - felt like old school high quality from proprietor that cares about the details. Simple yet lovingly put together over time with delightful details that echo nature and costa rica. Not the cheapest but your getting value for your money. Do find time to visit nearby San Juanillo beach. The prettiest we saw in Costa Rica.

Hotel Luna Azule is a must stop for anyone who is adventuring in Costa Rica!
My sister and her family stayed here 5 years ago and loved it so much they still talk about their experience to everyone who is talking about going to Costa Rica, so we had to make it part our trip too!
Rolf and Andreas plus Staff make your stay 5 star from their beautiful gardens and infinity pool to their immaculate spacious and inviting bungalows! It truly is a little piece of heaven on earth. The indoor outdoor living Experience they provide allows you to enjoy nature at its finest by listenIng to the birds and the ocean and if you are lucky Enough visits from Howler Monkeys and other amazing wildlife!
Take advantage of Rolf’s vast knowledge of the area and book a turtle tour with a local guide... absolutely a must experience!
To top everything off the restaurant at Luna Azule is by far one of our favourites In Costa Rica. The breakfast that is included is to be enjoyed and savoured while enjoying a stunning view and includes home made bread and jam as a wonderful treat! Dinner is a fine dining experience in both atmosphere and the quality of food! The flavours, portions and wonderful presentation make any choice worth trying!!
We began our adventures in Costa Rica here and loved it so much we changed our plans to stay again at what was to be the end of our trip and now that we ended up staying in Costa Rica to weather the worlds storms of 2020 we will be returning again very soon!
I can guarantee that your choice to stay at Luna Azul will be a highlight of your Costa Rica adventure!

I recently stayed at Luna Azul for a reunion with some high school friends. Our stay there couldn’t have been more delightful. Rolf, the owner, was a true gem who, along with his awesome staff, went out of his way to make sure we had everything we need at all times.
The food was delicious! Breakfast everyday was perfectly prepared and dinner was equally presented and delicious. The rooms were clean, quiet, spacious and comfortable and the overall setting was charming and easy to navigate. Whether sitting by the lovely pool, having breakfast in the open air dining room, or simply wandering the property, it was a first rate vacation from start to finish. I would stay there again in a heartbeat!

The Luna Azul is truly a beautiful and relaxing place. Rolf has taken great care to make sure each customer gets personalized service from him and his staff. From the minute you enter through the front gate, you are nestled into a peaceful Sanctuary. The food is fabulous and beautifully plated. The pool and surrounding areas bring a warm relaxing atmosphere... makes you want to hang out there all day.
This was our 2nd trip to the Luna Azul. But this time we came with our family..15 of us, including 7 grandchildren, ages 2-15. Rolf and his staff were so good with our grandchildren and made them feel welcome.
If there are 3 words to describe the Luna Azul, they are "attention to detail." Every aspect of this beautiful property has been well thought out and achieved. We highly recommend the Luna Azul.

This was a fantastic place to spend a few days in full nature.
We are a family of 5 and we had 2 connecting rooms so we really felt together.
The semi outdour showers are wonderful, you really get the empression you're taking a shower in the jungle.
The view from the main living room is breathtaking. The children spent a great time in the overflowing swimming pool.
Throughout the hotel you are surrounded by trees, monkeys and birds.
Our host really helped us to be at the right time and day to see the turtles.
Super helpfull, super flexible, super kind!
Thank you
Felix

We only stayed one night at Hotel Luna Azul but it was so magical that we have been trying to figure out when we can come back again. Rolf was incredibly knowledgable and so fun to chat with. We learned so much about the area and especially the turtles. While we discovered that (despite what the internet says) full moons are NOT the optimal time to see an arribada, we were still able to visit Ostional and see a couple tracks in the morning as well as one of the most beautiful sunrises of my life.
The food at Hotel Luna Azul was divine and everything we could have hoped for when it comes to authentic Costa Rican cuisine. The room was simple and clean with an outdoor bathroom (which we find fun) and large deck to watch the stars from. The grounds are immaculate and so full of life. We loved the untouched, natural feeling which was such a departure from the stale, lifeless grounds of the hotel we came from in Papagayo. Hotel Luna Azul is truly a gem and we endeavor to stay at beautiful and authentic places like this every time we visit Costa Rica.

The arribadas are always in the middle, between Full Moon and New Moon, around the last quarter moon and Lasts about 5 days. So you can get a moon calendar and find the dates. Turtles arrive in the incoming high tide, mostly in the middle of the high tide. But when there are big arribadas, they arrive day and night.
It is hard to say if you will see the turtles...they are unpredictable. Are you staying at Luna Azul because if you are, I would email them....they were super helpful and very tapped into the turtles coming and going. There is also a web-site that you could find that has the moon cycles that talks about the turtles...just google Olive Ridley Turtle Aribida Cycles....or something to that affect. Tamarindo is about an hour drive but it is excellent for surfing...a nice drive.
As far as I remember there were just a few rooms with "some" ocean view. Contact the owners, they are quite helpful accommodating guest request.
Regarding the beach access: There is none. the closest beach is like 10 minutes by car or over 30 minutes of hard (uneven, hilly) walking. Most people go to the turtle beach, but close by (even closer) there is a small beach with some fishers that for a few $ will take you around (better than the 'organize' tourist boat trip and way cheaper).
